Please be sure to attend the Tuesday and Thursday lectures as well as the Thursday studio/seminar.
General Description The purpose of this studio section is to give you hands‐on experience working through visual communication problems. The goal of the studio is to take the theoretical material learned in lecture and apply it when making design decisions in a real‐world information design situation. You will work in groups to create an informational poster about the H1N1 (Swine) Flu. You will also be required to produce a synopsis of the poster (including a specification of your data sources), a justification of your design decisions, and a critique of your group work.
Learning Objectives This studio has been designed with a number of learning and practical objectives in mind. The content and structure of the studio should allow students to: • • • • •
Learn to work effectively in a group setting Translate theory into design principles Work on a long‐term design project Produce a piece of visual communication for the HCDE senior portfolio Improve written communication skills and justify design decisions
Grading‐ 40 points Mock‐up (all group members receive same grade) 5 points (5%) Final Poster (all group members receive same grade) 10 points (10%) Poster synopsis and design justification* 15 points (15%) Group critique* 10 points (10%) *These assignments may NOT be done in collaboration with others
Note that these points will be applied to your final course grade. The other 60 points (60% of the course grade) are associated with the lecture portion of the course.
