AP PHYSICS CSKing Young Women’s Leadership Academy 2013-2014 COURSE OVERVIEW This course will meet every other day for 90 minutes. AP courses are designed to operate as college-level courses, in terms of rigor, expectations, and workload. Course goals include developing each student’s intuition, creativity and investigative skills to do the following: (abbreviated from the 2006-07 College Board AP Physics Course Description) • Read, understand, and interpret physical information. • Use the scientific method to analyze a particular physical phenomenon or problem. • Use basic mathematical reasoning in a physical situation or problem. • Perform experiments, interpret the results of observations and communicate results, including uncertainty assessment. The course consists of 12 units (see course outline), with a test at the completion of each unit. Homework is assigned every night (mostly from the primary textbook) and peer-reviewed the next day.

SUMMER ASSIGNMENT All students are expected to complete online review of basic math topics over the summer. Students who do not complete the review will be moved out of the AP course. Use the following directions to access the material: 

Click the join group button and enter the group name “AP Physics Summer” and the access code “asmlg”



Once you click the “Join” button, the group should now appear in your list of groups.

Once you have joined the group, you will receive an email with access to the materials. There are four sections to read: Metric Units, Unit Conversions, Vectors, and Unit Vectors and Components. All sections consist of a reading and all sections except Vectors have exercises and a quiz. Students should read all material, complete the exercises, and take the quiz. There will be a test on this material during the first week of school. Please contact Ms. Wade ASAP if you have trouble accessing or understanding the material.

GRADING In preparation for the AP exam, grading will be heavily weighted towards unit tests and labs. The official grade distribution is: 25% Unit Tests 25% Labs 15% Classwork 15% Homework 20% Final (1st semester) or Final Project (2nd semester)

LABS Labs are conducted concurrent to the topic studied. Each unit will have 1-2 student generated labs requiring full lab reports. Students are required to maintain a lab notebook containing all information. Lab reports, including a Question, Hypothesis, Experiment / Procedure, Analysis, and Conclusions will be due within a week after completion of the lab.
