Faith and Film Series 2013-2014 Series Facilitator: Judy Dwyer. M.A. For the fourth year we will explore aspects of faith, spirituality, courage, love, evil, forgiveness, and redemption through the lens of film. All films are shown on Thursday evenings in the Abbey Conference Center. Refreshments are served at 6:30 pm; films begin promptly at 7pm, followed by discussion. Donations are gratefully accepted. Judy Dwyer was a faculty member at Emmanuel College for 25 years in the Department of Psychology, where she held the position of Department Chair, guided student research, and taught courses in human development, physiological psychology, and research methods. Her own research focused on genetic and environmental contributions to psychopathology, including autism and affective disorders.

November 14, 2013 - The Painted Veil (2006) Based on Somerset Maugham’s 1925 novel, this dramatic tale allows a glimpse into a strained marriage and the challenges of British expatriates in China at a turbulent time in history.

January 9, 2014 - Amistad (1997) In 1839 a Cuban slave ship is held by The United States where the ship’s African slaves are facing trial for mutiny and are imprisoned as runaway slaves. John Quincy Adams argues an impassioned and eloquent plea for their release before the Supreme Court.

January 30, 2014 - The Bucket List (2007) Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman portray two men facing terminal illness. They set out on the road trip of a lifetime to address their ultimate todo lists. What priorities do we all identify when facing our final journey? What’s in your bucket?

February 20, 2014 - Hotel Rwanda (2004) History is replete with war stories of ordinary people who must try to navigate horrifying and overwhelming circumstances in order to survive. This dramatic and true story spotlights one extraordinary man during the genocidal wars of the Hutu and Tutsi tribes in Rwanda. Each of us can only try to imagine what kind of courage resides deep within our being.

March 20, 2014 - The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012) Facilitator: Kay Trask , M.Ed. This British comedy-drama features a favorite ensemble cast. A group of retirees embarks on a journey/holiday to India for a variety of reasons and motivations. Individually and collectively they confront life defining choices. How might you cast yourself in such a drama?

April 24, 2014 - The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980) A comic allegory about a traveling Bushman who encounters strange aspects of modern civilization, we witness the collision of universal human concepts with cultural diversity.
