USING GOOGLE DOCS Page 1 of 4 CSS 104 Handout #39 If you do not have access to a computer with a work processing program, college work can be difficult. Both face-to-face and online classes usually require you turn in your work using a word processing program. With your Skagit Valley College user name and password, you can easily access a set of free programs called “Google Docs”. To access these programs:

Go to the Skagit Valley website at www.skagit.edu. Click MySVC.

Click MyDocs.

At the Google Docs opening screen, click Create New. To create a new word processing document, choose Document.

This document window appears.

Should you choose, you can just start typing your document.

USING GOOGLE DOCS Page 2 of 4 CSS 104 Handout #39 However, you may want to change the default font face and size. To do so, click the down arrow by the default font name of “Verdana”.

This list of fonts appears. Click the font face you want to use.

Click the down arrow by the text size to choose the size of your font. Choose from any of the sizes on the list. However, unlike Microsoft Word and Open Office Writer, you cannot override the pre-set sizes.

If you are familiar with other word processing programs, these tools will be familiar.

Click the underlined A down arrow to open the color palette for your text color.

This is an example of text background color – the text is highlighted in your chosen color.

Click Link to enter a web link.

The information in the example on the right yields what is displayed below.

Further on the tool bar are tools to insert a numbered or bulleted list.

These tools set your alignment.

RIGHT ALIGN

While the newest version of Google Docs does NOT have a regular spell checker, you can click on View and Enable Spelling Suggestions to check a specific word..
