Dec 29, 2013 ... We celebrate Mary, Joseph, and Jesus because they—individually and to- gether —submitted their lives to God and grew closer to one another.
HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH BY MARY KATHERINE DEELEY At our wedding, my husband and I promised to love and honor each other, to welcome children, and to welcome everyone they knew. Friends came and went, always finding a warm welcome and a bowl of fruit salad. It didn’t matter that our house was small—our love was great. We grew together in the understanding that we couldn’t do anything we wanted individually; we had to consider each other as we made major decisions. It wasn’t always convenient. Without the grace of God, we might have found the promise difficult, but we submitted ourselves to God and each other—and found strength in the process. Thirty-plus years later, we’re still growing deeper in love and in willingness to put the other first.

We celebrate Mary, Joseph, and Jesus because they—individually and together—submitted their lives to God and grew closer to one another. Today, that’s still the formula. It requires every item on Paul’s list in Colossians: compassion, kindness, humility, and patience—with a good measure of gratitude and love thrown in. Is it always easy? No. We will—occasionally, and sometimes suddenly—have to move, change jobs, or deal with emergencies. But the grace of family is a peculiar thing. It gets us through the rough times and makes us appreciate the easy ones. We’re part of God’s family. The more we practice the fruits of love, the closer we come to the holiness and example of that First Family. [email protected]

FEEDING THE HUNGRY Please leave your donations for the Tecate organizations and the Pregnancy Care Center of El Cajon on the tables in the courtyard after all the Masses next weekend, January 4 - 5, 2014. PLEASE do not leave any clothing other than maternity and baby clothing for the Pregnancy Care Center. Dear Jesus, you said that your flesh and blood were real food and real drink and those who consumed it would have eternal life. But before you gave your flesh for the life of the world, you fed thousands with small amounts of bread and fish. Before you fed our souls, you fed our bodies. Before our eternal life, we must live in this life. Helps us, Lord, to see you in the hungry of our world. Inspire us to feed not only the souls of the needy, but their bodies as well. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Christ is like a roped guide climbing a mountain who, on reaching the summit, pulls us up to him and leads us to God. If we entrust our life to him, if we let ourselves be guided by him, we are certain to be in safe hands, in the hands of our Savior, of our advocate. Pope Francis

Do you feel a pull to join the Catholic Church? Is the path you are on in life seem to keep coming back to the Church? When all of life is swirling around, does Mass bring you peace? “Called in the Gospels ‘mother of Jesus,’ Mary is acclaimed by Elizabeth, at the prompting of the Spirit and even before the birth of her son, as ‘the mother of my Lord.’ In fact, the One whom she conceived as man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other than the Father’s eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence, the Church confesses that Mary is truly ‘Mother of God’ (Theotokos)” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 495)

Holy Mary, Theotokos, pray for us as we enter this New Year
