Industrialist Andrew Carnegie had a fortune of about $30 million and an annual income of $1.85 million when his essay first appeared in the North American Review in June 1889. The article was subsequently reprinted under the title “The Gospel of Wealth”, and it brought Carnegie greater fame than he had ever before enjoyed. The tycoon practiced, as well as preached, these words. The largest of his foundation’s was called the Carnegie Corporation of New York. He gave $125 million to them and the undistributed portion of his estate, so that it could continue after his death.
