Common Error: Hitting “Save” too Early Saving files to a flash drive is easy when navigating to a flash drive before clicking the “Save” button. If you hit “Save” without navigating to the flash drive, the file is saved to the C drive on the computer, not the flash drive. In this example, the file will be saved to the “Documents” folder on the computer C drive. This file can only be accessed from this computer.

Be sure to navigate to your flash drive before saving a file.

This Word document will be saved to the “Documents” folder on the C: drive of this computer unless the student navigates to a flash drive. Your flash drive should be listed here in the “Save As” window.

Saving a File to a Flash Drive. In this example, a student is creating a document using Word and needs to save it to a flash drive. To save this file, click on the Office Button in the upper left corner of the screen, scroll down, and click on “Save.”

The “Documents” folder is the default location.

Saving a File The “Save As” window will appear on your screen. Notice the default location is the “Documents” folder which is on the C drive of your computer. Don’t click the “Save” button yet!

Using Windows Vista Navigate to a flash drive by clicking on “Computer” if you’re using Windows Vista. Windows XP users should click on “My Computer” as shown on the next slide.

Locate a Flash Drive

After you click on “Computer” or “My Computer,” you will see a list of storage devices. Scroll down until you see your flash drive. Doubleclick on the flash drive to open it. This student’s flash drive is named “RLCFLASH.”

The flash drive named “RLCFLASH” is open. The “Save As” window lists where the file will be saved.

In this example, a student has double-clicked to open a flash drive named “RLCFLASH.” Important tip: The “Save As” window always lists the storage device or folder that is open.

Type the name of the file in the “File name” box. File names should be as short as possible.

Double-click to open a folder. In this example, the student wants to save a homework assignment to the BTS141 folder. The student needs to open this folder by doubleclicking on the folder icon.

The “Save As” window lists where your file will be saved.

The “Homework 1” file will be saved in the “BTS141” subfolder.

In this example, a student wants to save the homework 1 file in the BTS141 subfolder. This will happen when the student clicks on the “Save” button.

To rename a file, click in the “File name” box and type a new name before clicking the “Save” button.
