Human Rights Challenges through Climate Change Climate change is recognized as one major factor driving whole populations to leave their homes. Various UN reports show the direct link between climate change and migratory / refugee streams. Those migrants or refugees often belong to the most vulnerable parts of society, escaping extreme poverty or conflicts resulting again partially from climate change. To the 2008 session of the Social Forum, FES will contribute a discussion on the effects of climate change on vulnerable communities, the resulting conflicts and migration. With this debate we want to raise awareness of the human rights implications of this issue providing a possibility to discuss possible action, development perspectives and solutions for the populations concerned as current international human rights law does not provide the protection needed to address this increasing problem.
