WORKSHOP

This is my first SaloneSatellite as president, and I’m honored. But I’ve been visiting it and being thrilled by it for 15 years. Each time more intensely, and each time for different reasons. I admire these young designers, who wear their enthusiasm on their faces, so conscientious in the installation of their stands, so passionate in pitching their projects. And many of whom make great sacrifices to travel here. This Salone, dedicated to young creativity, is a marvelous invention, an act of great foresight. Believing in young people and wanting to help them is a noble mission. It means imagining the future of design, and as such the SaloneSatellite has always helped to design the future. I strongly believe in innovation; have made it my own mission.

Claudio Luti, Presidente Cosmit

better than young people to provoke us to change, to think, to revise our assumptions? Not only in our work, but in our lives. In response to the urgency that these young people feel today, which is to integrate traditional craftsmanship into the latest methods of industrial design and production, the SaloneSatellite proposes the theme “Design and Craftsmanship: Together for Industry”. It explores the techniques of working with wood, glass and metal with the real-time participation of master craftsmen, culminating in a special ‘digital laboratory’. Claudio Luti, Presidente Cosmit

After having celebrated 15 years of the SaloneSatellite, our first thought - as always - goes back to the true aim of this event, organized by Cosmit and the Salone Internazionale del Mobile: to offer young designers the opportunity to make themselves known in the real world of design production. We have dedicated this year’s edition to a need felt by all young designers: integrating traditional craftsmanship with the incredible possibilities offered today by industrial design and production. “Design and Craftsmanship: Together for Industry” presents four artisanal ‘workshops’, in function of the materials involved: Wood, Glass, Metal and a special Digital Workshop.

Marva Griffin Wilshire, Curatore/Curator

The future of industrial design is inextricably tied to traditional craftsmanship. The workshops featured at the SaloneSatellite will introduce young designers and visitors to the world of creativity and handcraft through traditional artisanal techniques that tie directly into industrial production. But that’s not all. The Digital Workshop will offer a variety of responses the question that many are asking: how will the design world change when digital fabrication and 3D printing become consolidated realities? As always, the SaloneSatellite is a bridge to the future. Marva Griffin Wilshire, Curatore/Curator

The collection Acqua Alta stems from the idea to emphasize the historical and cultural legacy of Venice starting from a very peculiar phenomenon, i.e. high water. The texture, colours, the erosive action and marks left by water generate a research on new themes and patterns.

Buds is the series of collapsible and portable furniture. My work is based on parasite strategies according to which other objects are produced. The ornaments of a shelf, for instance, can differ and the same material could be used in a double way. The result reflects therefore the whole process and history of the production.

The inspiration for the Origami family of tables in crystal glass came by folding paper according to antique Japanese techniques. Glass is thus transformed into complex and fascinating shapes of innate beauty. Paper, with its light touch and opacity, and glass with its physical heaviness and transparency, have opposite features but also a specific quality in common: the sense of lightness.

Francesco Barbi e Guido Bottazzo are young designers who like working on the aesthetic impact of their products. DESIGN E ARTIGIANATO: INSIEME PER L’INDUSTRIA

DESIGN AND CRAFTSMANSHIP: TOGETHER FOR INDUSTRY

Four workshops that speak the language of craftsmen, of those who have made possible what has become known to the world as Made in Italy. Hard-working, skilled and creative, artisans are veritable engineers of manuality, and unfortunately at high risk of extinction. They are that quiet class who still today, in the era of the most advanced industrialization, indispensable to industry for realizing prototypes and components without which serial production would be impossible.

This initiative arose from the desire to give greater visibility to a hidden world, to those who remain behind the scenes of the design sector, to the tailors and decorators who cut and decorate the objects in our lives, to the backstage crew of the design world star system. Moreover, there is the great desire to encourage dialogue between these master craftsmen and young designers, so that the former might educate and motivate the latter, in the hope that the subtleties of their trades may be passed on before it’s too late.

Two venerable artisans from Cantù, a master glassmaker former SaloneSatellite participant, and a technician from a digital lab will alternate demonstrations, interacting with the public and inviting them to provide ideas to realize on site.

The continuation of a millennia-old technique, unaltered over the centuries, where the blowing pipe meets the skill of the master glassmaker. Here, Massimo Lunardon, former participant in the SaloneSatellite, brings young designers’ ideas to life. Woodworking is one of mankind’s earliest arts... A simple lathe can recount cut, seasoning and classification. LA BOTTEGA DIGITALE / THE DIGITAL WORKSHOP Un possibile showroom dove i progetti vengono scelti, personalizzati e stampati in real time.

A virtual showroom where projects are chosen, personalized and printed in real time. Here one can try out new personalization software, print a design in 3D and even make it interactive.

Where ideas merge with different materials, assuming the most varied forms to become objects in our everyday lives.

DIZIONARIO DICTIONARY

DESIGN E ARTIGIANATO: INSIEME PER L’INDUSTRIA DESIGN AND CRAFTSMANSHIP: TOGETHER FOR INDUSTRY

“Manufacturing activity typical of the patient man, inclined to beauty, to respect for the value of raw materials, to refinement of his abilities to transform them. Currently handicraft represents an effective antidote to the stress of the designer suffering from the lack of products being made by industry”.

“I had modernist teachers at a time when the post-modern was making advances: I have a passion for function, and an inclination towards freer forms of design and thus of beauty. But the crucial themes today are different ones. If it doesn’t want to become obsolete, beauty has to express the coherence of a process: is good use being made of the materials? Is there balance in the design, in the company, even in the logistics behind a particular object? Today in the field of design there is no beauty without transparency.’

“Creativity for me is an unexplored track, a course that has not been plotted. It’s not something that is already there, that exists, but something that you have to find, to discover in yourself, and it’s a bit like feeling your way around in a dark room, looking for a way out that you’re never sure of finding”

“The best synonym for design is culture, or rather the authoritativeness that leads to certain objects being accepted as part of our world. Study is needed to approach design. It is indispensable to have assimilated the lesson that from the times of the Bauhaus to the post-war period in this country continued to shape everything around us. The canons of design are the ones by which we have chosen to live, and that we propose around the world when we go seeking new markets”

FUNZIONALITÀ [Function] EQUILIBRIO [Balance] GIULIO CAPPELLINI: “Bisogna saper bilanciare forma e materiale, funzione e bellezza, oggetto e contesto. “It’s necessary to know how to balance form and material, function and beauty, object and context. Balance is synonymous with a successful product, and vanishes when you take an exaggerated approach to design: it suffices to think of certain formal excesses or the accumulation of too many different materials in a single object. Balanced design fits into the most diverse settings, an unbalanced object is often much more difficult to find a place for”.

“When I think about “function” what comes to my mind first is “fun”. I personally like to use the word “utility” instead of “function” in the context of use of an object or a product. For me the act of offering flowers to the loved one is as important a function of life as working out appropriate ergonomics for the passenger seat of a car that converts into a working seat. The user can effectively do the task and above all have ‘fun’ using it”.

“This is the industrial answer to the problem of reducing costs. Given the high fixed costs of technology and tools, the aim is to spread their impact over a large number of pieces. This process has generated products of high quality at moderate prices, but also resulted in companies exercising a constant pressure on the market to absorb their production. In the same way the selection of products in which to invest is often oriented towards “best-sellers” and names that boost sales”.

“The true definition of design is industrial design, because without industry the design of objects would simply be a way of expressing beauty. But mass production places a design within the reach of many if not all. In essence industry makes possible the spread of design: can we even remotely imagine what a car would cost without industrial production?”.

“All that wood lacks is words. It’s alive, it moves, sometimes it rebels: if you take a piece of oak timber to Iceland the dry climate splits it and fills it with cracks. You must not do violence to wood: certain varnishes and paints suffocate it like a cellophane wrapping; much better the oil colours that let it breathe. After all wood is a piece of nature: it should be accepted as it is. And then it is a piece of history: design cut its teeth on wood. When you work it the tradition is always there with you”.

“It is work with the hands that has made Italy great: when compared with the multitude of craftsmen any industry looks small. And yet the crafts are disappearing because no one is willing to make sacrifices to learn anymore. In the last twenty years the young have shunned apprenticeship, preferring the office, the factory or university. But however hard he has to work, a craftsman can always live off what he does. It is in moments of difficulty that you feel fortunate to have a craft.”

ORNAMENTO [Ornament]

“An adjective that’s only truth is that it will turn old sooner or later. For what is considered to be old rather than new is determined by a constantly moving boundary. The only escape from this cruel process is to create products that become classics”.

“Ornament is a term with an almost “vintage” flavour, decidedly out of place in a world like ours that has to try to make a correct use of resources. And yet we are in a period of rapid expansion of the possibilities of research in the graphic and three-dimensional field. Production is showing an increasing tendency to diversify thanks to the new technologies of CAD and mass production. So I think there is a need, when the project requires it, to shake off certain prejudices in order to explore new possibilities. Nor should we forget the emotional function of objects, and the dialogue between handicraft and advanced manufacturing techniques that is one of the most interesting lines of research”.

“A set of technologies developed to allow the rapid creation of the first objects in a series, which can then be used to test functionality, usability and aesthetic appearance. Rapid prototyping has made it possible to speed up the time it takes to bring products to market, reducing production defects. Recently some of these technologies have emerged from the world of manufacturing and been turned into ‘DIY 3D printers’. In this case the objective is no longer the creation of a prototype, but of an individual piece or a small run, made by the end user or by self-producing designers”

“Quality in design or industrially manufactured products for me is always a direct representation of the mind that conceived the design and the mind-set that produced the design in an industrial or artisanal way. It is never an accident but is always the direct result of a cultivated mind. A cultivated mind that conceives and produces with utmost care and consideration has a quality”.

“Roots, we all have them and they are completely different for each of us. It is something you cannot escape, nor affect, nor change, so embrace your roots and use the power in your particular heritage to create masterpieces. Roots exist to be preserved, their story needs to be told both now and in the future”.

“For me the mould has always been accompanied by an almost never settled vacillation between being cautious and being creative, and ultimately it is always the taking of a risk that can mean your suicide or your beatification”.

TEMPO [Time]

UNICO [One-Off]

GIULIO CAPPELLINI: “Il design produce best seller, il buon design produce long seller.

“Design produces best-sellers, good design produces classics that go on selling for a long time. So the question of time is a fundamental variable: it is necessary to be contemporary and timeless, extremely up-to-date and serenely classical. There is a reason why the furniture of the fifties is back in vogue today: nothing gives the buyer such a sense of security as an object with a history behind it. The contemporary design that stands up to the wear and tear of time ends up with an inimitable patina of solidity and practicality”.

“The same but not the same: if you work with plastic you can mould it in series, but if you’re dealing with bark it’s always going to be a oneoff piece. Let’s take a thousands-of-years-old piece of kauri timber: with such varied grain it is impossible to get two identical planks. Or furniture made from the famous briccole, Venetian piles eroded by the tide: there every centimetre is unique. But the philosophy of the one-off piece has to go beyond materials and extend to techniques of production as well: technology is a guarantee of quality only if it does not kill off manual skill”.

“Glass is magical. I only have to look at it before starting on a work to get lost in my fantasies. It is not easy to master glass: if you’re consumed with passion it’ll take you five years of practice, but if you do things calmly it’s going to take seven, eight years. This is because glass is unique: you can’t bluff with its transparency. If you work glass you don’t have a side that’s in shadow where you can hide: the only way to do good work is to do perfect work”.

“A sudden and decisive act that breaks a deadlock. For the feline a well-dealt zampata [literally “blow with a paw,” figuratively a “stroke of genius”] results in the immediate defeat of its adversary, while for a designer the zampata is an impulsive gesture, an expression of creative genius that, with a stroke of the pencil, combines function and beauty, balance and form, harmony and personality. By its nature the zampata is a very rare event that cannot be planned for”.

It’s time for the fourth edition of the award instituted by the SaloneSatellite to further consolidate the event whose purpose is to facilitate contact between businesses and designers, between creativity and production. The award offers young designers additional motivation to their commitment and greater visibility to their ideas. It also aims to help them focus their creativity by pushing them to think specifically in terms of the furnishing typologies present in the catalogues of the exhibitors at the Saloni, particularly this year’s Euroluce and SaloneUfficio. The award is also intended to bring the manufacturing world closer and make it more real to young designers, for whom it is all too often a distant mirage. This gives them a chance to meet and talk with potential patrons, to realize what they would like to become. An award dedicated to the design of tomorrow.

Atelier 2.7 Samuel Treindl - Germany (Stand B23)

Acqua Alta - Italy (Stand C8)

Part of the “Acqua alta” collection, the body of the lamp is in latheturned marble, worked in a way to recreate the textures that centuries of water erosion have left on the marbles of Venice. It is a small lamp that diffuses its light upwards and through the material, creating a warm, convivial atmosphere.

Omoto is inspired by the Japanese city of Tokyo. Constructed using three elemental components, Omoto uses gravity to hold its visually delicate form. The leg components are held together using traditional dry joints.

Architect Taitan - Japan (Stand A37)

Buds - In Praise of Scenery Mobile pieghevole e portatile. This work is inspired on a parasite strategy. The cabinet and other objects are produced simultaneously, so the same material could be double-used. According to which other objects are produced, the thickness of the material as well as the obtained ornaments can differ. The result reflects therefore the whole process and history of the production.

Apparello arises from the nostalgic memory of a childhood’s toy. We gave it a new life maintaining its lightness replacing the paper with thin sheets of carbon. A lamp which starts to spin slowly when being touched slightly by who wants to play with it.

This project is a translation of an idea that started by looking for a material which has the same properties as when you fold a piece of paper into an origami shape. Further along the way I discoverd the material Dibond/Vibond. Of which my divider is made off. To me it’s an invisible brought to a visible form language. But instead of just reducing it, I want to deform it and add an aesthetic/ functional/conceptual value to it and it’s user.

The concept was inspired from the structure of ideogrammatic compound, which I take as a design tool. I took the character “凵” which means hole and also took the word “亅” which means hook, and to design two objects (ceiling light and stationery storage), each product possess individual meaning and function, once combing with these

two objects, the third function is formed (desk lamp). Like two or more pictographic or ideogrammatic characters are combined to suggest a third meaning, but before combing the characters together, each character still has a meaning behind.

Grau1 is set of a chair (50x71cm) and a table (130x75cm) that has to be unfolded for use, you just have to take it of the wall. A fabric mantle encases a strong core (wood poors inside). The chair can be folded in both directions: inside out, outside in. No hinges necessary. Its a play of combining different materials, surfaces with empty spaces, destroying and rebuilding.

This collection of desktop accessories uses the age-old technique of bricklaying, softened by the ductility of iron bars. The decoration is created by inscribing the surfaces with a metal wire, in the same way that blocks of clay are cut. The mixture of clay, lime, sand and vegetal fiber is dried in the mold rather than kiln fired, and thus has an extremely low environmental impact.

F(a)glie arose from reflections on the possibility of ‘folding’ a surface to create a single volume solely through variations in light. The 2-dimensional metal sheet is engraved to create a texture of solids and voids and to define the folds and volumes, which in turn generate a play of chiaroscuro when off, and cast shadows when on.
