ASCRS highlights new products The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) held its annual meeting in Chicago in April. The meeting is the largest gathering of cataract and refractive surgeons in North America. As in past years, industry took advantage of the occasion to highlight many new products and upgrades.

Product Launches Carl Zeiss Meditec introduces new hardware and software Carl Zeiss Meditec introduced several new diagnostic and surgical products at the conference. This included three new platforms, each designed to be scalable and expandable for long-term operation. One of these was the Cirrus™ HD-OCT, the first in its category to deliver 3D maps of segmented retinal layers. The new system provides detailed, highly reproducible RNFL measurements and comparisons to normal values. The company also debuted the new VISULAS Trion multi-colour laser, an advanced photocoagulation system that offers performance in yellow, red and green wavelengths. The laser features intuitive touch navigation and integrates with the Zeiss Laser Slit Lamp.

Cirrus™ HD-OCT

On the software side, the company introduced the Visante™ OCT Software for complete anterior and posterior corneal topography with high-resolution OCT and the Atlas® Placido disk technology. This combination will allow clinicians to measure the thickness of the cornea and more precisely view pathologies, anatomical and structural issues, and the curvature and back of the cornea.

Another new software product is the Guided Progression Analysis™ (GPA) software, which accurately predicts a patient’s stage of disease, rate of progression and risk of future vision loss by measuring statistically significant change. GPA is available with the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA II-i), Stratus OCT™ and GDx™ Review software. The company also introduced new software for the Stratus OCT. The Advanced Serial Analysis software package gives clinicians new applications to facilitate the interpretation of glaucoma and retinal analysis. The Callisto integrated workflow system for ophthalmic surgery was also on display. Attendees at the conference were also able to see the new OPMI Lumera® and OPMI Lumera® T surgical microscopes from Zeiss, the new Optic (ZO®) Aspheric IOL, www.meditec.zeiss.com New from AMO Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) used the Chicago meeting for the US introduction of Tecnis® 1-Piece intraocular lens. The hydrophobic acrylic lens was introduced in Europe at the annual ESCRS Congress. According to AMO, the design of the lens reduces spherical aberration to essentially zero, and improves night driving simulator performance. The design includes the ProTec™ 360-degree edge with an uninterrupted barrier edge designed to minimise cell migration onto the posterior capsule. Unlike first-generation one-piece lenses, the current version has no interruption at the haptic-optic junction. The lens also has a frosted edge designed to minimise edge glare. The Tri-Fix™ design provides three-point fixation. The lens qualifies as a New Technology Intraocular Lens (NTIOL), which allows for favourable reimbursement in the US. AMO also announced its arrival in the dry eye market, with a new over-thecounter eye drop, blink® Tears Lubricating Eye Drops. The drops are said to mimic natural tears. The company reports the drops offer long-lasting relief with less blurring of vision while improving tear film stability. AMO plans to launch blink® Tears Lubricating Eye Drops in Europe in the second half of 2008. www.amo-inc.com New model of Ex-PRESS Shunt Optonol launched the P model Ex-PRESS Mini Glaucoma Shunt. The company says the P model offers an enhanced method of filtration surgery for patients with open angle glaucoma offering more predictability better centration in the angle and more consistent outflow. The P model preloaded

on the Ex-PRESS Delivery System. It can be implanted in phakic, aphakic, and pseudophakic eyes www.optonol.com EP instrument for glaucoma Paradigm Medical Industries introduced its Glaid-PERG electrophysiology instrument for the early detection of glaucoma. The company says the instrument should allow earlier detection of glaucoma, offering the capability to detect cellular losses attributed to glaucoma. The company signed an exclusive agreement with LACE Elettronica srl (Rome, Italy) to distribute the Glaid-PERG instrument earlier this year. Paradigm also introduced a prototype version of its redesigned LD400 Autoperimetry system. www.paradigm-medical.com STAAR advances the Visian ICL STAAR Surgical Company had a strong presence at this year's meeting. The company launched its microincision nanoPOINT delivery system, demonstrated the new NTIOL designation for the Affinity Collamer Aspheric foldable IOL Model CQ2015A, and launched a new marketing programme designed to help surgeons build their Visian practices. The nine-part ICL Growth Program focuses on the key elements required to build a successful Visian ICL practice. www.staar.com
