Airport Transit Visa (A-Transit) All Indian citizens in air transit through Germany need to apply for a transit visa at the Consulate General. It allows its bearer a short stopover at a German airport, leaving the airport’s international transit area not possible. In Germany there are only three airports having an international transit area: Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg. Indian airport transit travellers who do not require a transit visa are: (A) Holder of a valid residence permit or a visa - of a member state of the European Union (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Spain, United Kingdom) or - of a member state of the European Economic Area (all aforementioned countries of the European Union plus Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or (B) Holder of a valid residence permit or visa of Canada, Japan or the USA or (C) Holder of a valid residence permit of Andorra or San Marino or (D) Holder of a valid visa issued by Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, Ireland, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan or the USA irrespective of the travel destination. The German Consulate General in Kolkata issues Airport Transit Visas only for residents under its consular area, which includes the states of: West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram,Nagaland and Tripura. The location of passport issuance is not relevant for the said determination. Prior to application an applicant/travel agent is required to come to the Consulate with the completed visa application form(s) and all supporting documents, to collect a token mentioning date and time for submission of their application/s. Failing to submit the application due to unavailability of such a token for that particular day, the applicant will be given the next available date and time to submit his/her application(s). Visa applications may require five working days for processing from the day of submission. All applicants, as a general rule, need to appear for a personal identification. Depending on situation an exception to the rule of personal appearance at the German Consulate may apply to those applicants who either – have been furnished with at least two Schengen visa within the last 24 months prior to the date of application and have travelled on the visa and returned to India on or before the date of expiry of the visa or – have been furnished with a visa with a validity of one, two or five years and have travelled on this visa within the last 24 months according to the Schengen regulations (max. stay in the Schengen area of 90 days per 6 months) prior to the date of application
