Pump & Drive Shaft Installation: 5.

Re-install Engine Compartment Access Guards. The engine compartment guards can be reinstalled after the pulley adapter has been tighten down, use the same bolts to reinstall guard as were taken out to remove them. These guards must be replaced the same as they were removed. DO NOT operate the tractor without these guards installed. The guards and mounting hardware will be reused (See Figure 3).

6. Install Pump Drive Shaft (P/N 107385). Coat the pump Drive Shaft splined end with a anti-seize compound (See Figure 9). Insert the drive shaft under the radiator and Battery and into the splined pulley adapter. NOTE: Some tractors have rubber under radiator, if this rubber touches the driveshaft it will have to be trimmed to clear. The rubber under the radiator can be trimmed with a knife or in extreme case with a hole saw, but the battery will have to be moved out of the way to cut the rubber. The driveshaft must clear any objects by a minimum of 1/16" and not allowed to rub. The driveshaft has a 7/8" X 13 spline on both ends and can be installed in eather direction (See Figure 7 & 8).

Pump & Drive Shaft Installation: 7. Install Machined Pump Mount Plate The machined pump mount plate (P/N 108780) bolts to the front of the bolster in the four existing threaded bolt holes (See Figure 10). These bolt holes will have plastic plugs in them that will need to be removed (See Figure 10 ). The pump mount Plate bolts to the tractor with 4 mounting bolts (M20-P2.5 ) & Lockwasher (M20), Tighten the two upper and two lower bolts at this time. 8.

Install Driveshaft Carrier Bearing & Locking Collar. The pump mount weldment has a carrier bearing in it (See Figure 1 & 10). There is a locking collar on the bearing, make certain the set screw in locking collar is loosened before trying to slide it over the driveshaft. It is recommended that the bearing ID be coated with an anti-seize compound where shaft goes through bearing (See Figure 12). Start the driveshaft through the carrier bearing (See Figure 10). Driveshaft should be inserted completely through the Carrier Bearing and into the crankshaft pulley adapter (See Figure 1 & 11). Check the clearance between drive shaft and tractor front bolster, clearance should not be a problem but check to make certain.. If the driveshaft doesn't have clearance the bolster will have to be ground down. DO NOT Tighten locking collar on carrier bearing yet.

Figure 10 Driveshaft inserts into crankshaft pulley adapter here

9.

Coat the splined end of shaft with anti-seize compound. Coat the splines of the protruding end of end of the driveshaft with an anti-seize compound (See Figure 12). Do not use an excessive amount and do not use grease.

10.

Install Tank Mount Rails. The tank mount rails are the same LH or RH. (P/N 108783), These will mount using spacers between the rails and the tractor bolster. Because the surface of the four mounting bolts on tractor bolster are not even the spacer must be of twoi different thickness. The front holes have a thick Spacer (P/N 02976293 Tank Rail Spacer 3/4" thick) and the rear two holes use a thin spacer (P/N 02976294 Tank Rail Spacer 3/32" thick). These spacers must be installed this way or the tank rails will not be the same width as the tank and mounting bolts will not start straight (See Figure 9 & 13). Leave these bolts a bit loose it will make it easier to install hydraulic tank assembly (See Figure 13 &14)

Figure 11 Apply Anti-Sieze to ID of Bearing.

Section 2 - 5

Driveshaft, Pump & Tank Installation 11.

Install Hydraulic Tank. The hydraulic tank mounts between the two front tank mounting rails (See Figure 14). DO NOT remove any caps and/or plugs from the hydraulic tank, leave the tank closed until ready to install lines and this will keep contamination out of hydraulic system. Use an overhead hoist is recommended for installing the hydraulic tank (See Figure 14). After hydraulic tanks bottom mounting strips are aligned with the holes in the Tank Mount Rails insert the retaining bolts, two on each side. But only snug the bolts for now, do not tighten them as they will have to be aligned with the bumper weldment later. (See Figure 15).

Thin (3/32") Spacer

12.

Install Bumper. The bumper installs in front of the hydraulic tank with two bolts on each side (See Figure 15). Sometimes this will take some moving around to align the bolts and holes, usually this can be done by inserting a punch into one of the holes or by someone assisting you.

13.

Tighten Hydraulic Tank, Tank Mount Rails & Bumper Mounting Bolts. Tighten the bolts now that are in the Tank mount rails, Hydraulic tank & Bumper now. Make certain all are tightened securely (See Figure 16).

14. Install Driveshaft Spline Coupler. The outer end of the driveshaft will use a splined coupler only (P/ N 106557) for TRACTORS that use the tractor hydraulics for cylinder hydraulics. Skip the next steps of installing the splined coupler pulley weldment and auxiliary pump for tractors that use tractor hydraulic supply for cylinders (See Figure 17). TRACTORS that use the Auxiliary Pump for cylinder hydraulic supply will use the splined coupler pulley weldment go on to next step for auxiliary pump.

17.

Install Pump Retaining bolts. The pump retaining bolts are to be installed by hand. The pump should be seated into the opening provided in the pump mount weldment for the pump flange ring (See Figure 20). Install the two pump mounting bolts and tighten them. DO NOT use the bolts to force pump flange into the pump mount weldment, if you do you will break the flange ears off of the pump. If the pump will not go by pushing it in take the pump out and check the opening for excess paint or burrs. The pump must be installed with suction to LH side.

Driveshaft, Pump & Tank Installation 18.

Adjust Splined Coupler/ Pulley Weldment. The splined Coupler Pulley weldment must be adjusted to run in the correct location. Note the long end of the splined coupler goes on first and has a roll pin that is driven trough the splined coupler. Push the pulley outward until the splined coupler is slid as far as it will go onto the Pump Shaft (See Figure 21). Pull the driveshaft out of the crankshaft pulley adapter until it is in the splined coupler / pulley weldment as far as it will go. Tighten the setscrew in the carrier bearing locking collar, this will prevent the drive pulley weldment alignment from moving. Double check to make certain the locking collar is tight against driveshaft. NOTE: If driveshaft is tight and will not slide out to coupler by hand, use a pair of locking grip pliers on the shaft next to the tractor bolster, use a small pry bar between pliers and bolster to slide shaft out of crankshaft pulley and make certain it is into the splined coupler as far as it will go (See Figure 21).

Wing Mower Installation Connecting Mower Motor Hoses: 1.

Connect Motor Pressure & Return Hoses to Mower Deck. Connecting the Motor Hoses is very critical that they a re connected to the correct fittings, If these hose are connected backwards it will damage the cooling tubes on the deck, the cooling tubes cannot take the pressure it will make them swell up and bulge. IMPORTANT FACT. When connecting the hoses to the fittings on the mainframe crossmember remember the top hose is always thew pressure hose and will only connect to the motor, never the cooling tubes on the deck. The bottom hoses are the return hoses and will always connect to the cooling tubes on the mower deck. (See Figure 18 & 19). The RH wing will connect the same as the LH mower (Shown). IMPORTANT. On the RH Wing the top hose is pressure and connect to the Motor and the bottom hose connects to the Tank return.

Pressure Hose f/ Pump top hose

bottom hose

Figure 18

2.

Double Check all Hose Connections. Before operating the mower make certain all hydraulic hoses are connected correctly. IT IS MOST critical that you make certain NO HIGH PRESSURE hoses are connected to the wet tubes of the mower deck, The wet tubes will expand (swell up) and be damage if the High Pressure hose is connected to the deck wet (cooling) tubes. See Figure 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 & 27. Looking at all these figure before going on to next step is important.

3. Install Pump Cover. The front pump cover will bolt to the tank, this cover will cover pumps and all hoses and/or fittings connected to the pump (See Figure 20). Set the cover down over the pumps. Align the hove in cover with the tabs welded to the tank (See Figure 20).

4.

Install Rear Mower. Go on to the Install rear mower section which will also include the Initial Start up procedures. DO NOT START Tractor until you have completed the initial start up section.

Control Valve Cable Clips. Locate the four cable mounting clips and four roll pins (shown laying on muffler bracket for illustration only in Figure 11). Start the roll pins into the clips as shown through one side only (See Figure 11). Insert the Remote Cable through the Control Valve Mount Bracket (See Figure 3). Install the large cable retaining / Adjusting nut onto threaded portion of cable housing (See Figure 12). DO NOT tighten this large nut until later. On the tip of the threaded end of the cable there is a 1/4" nut. Screw this nut down onto cable. Insert the cable clip down over threaded cable end (See Figure 13). Find the four for dual wing and two for single wing 1/4" nut supplied, install one onto end of cable down into clip. This nut should be screwed onto cable at least the thickness of the nut, do not screw it on so far that it will interfere with the operation of the cable. Using the nut that was already on the cable screw the nut out until it is against the clip from the bottom side, tightening this nut against clip will lock the other nut inside of clip. (See Figure 13).

Drill Holes IN Floor Mat and Cab of Tractor to Install Remote Cable Control Lever Mounting Stand In Cab Tractor. IMPORTANT! Read this complete section before drilling any holes, this will help make certain that components will be installed correctly. There are two 1-1/2" minimum size holes that will need to be drilled into the floor mat and one copletely through the floor of tractor (See Figure 20 & 21). These holes are best cut with round hole saw. Looking at the pictures note the location of holes as compared the the ribs that run across the floor mat, this will give you indication of the location of these holes in floor mat. IMPORTANT! The hole in floor mat in figure 20 WILL NOT go throught the floor of the cab, only the floor mat. The hole in figure 21 will go through floor mat anf cab floor. Before drilling any holes lift floor amt and check to make certain there are no wires or lines that will be hit, look under cab to make certain it is clear of anythis that might interfere with hole. The first hole (See Figure 20) will be for the valve stand (P/N 02961912) to be installed. It is recommended that the stand be set in the cab and marked for clearance before drilling holes. This hole will need to be far enough away from front of cab and the door frame Figure 20 to allow the square mount plate of the stand to be installed, this hole will be in the floor mat only and NOT into the cab floor. T h e second hole (See Figure 21) will be drilled through floor mat and floor of cab. This hole will be for the cables to enter the cab. Check before drilling holes for any obstruction that may be damaged by drilling hole. Use the square mount plate on bottom of vavle control cable mounting stand to make a template of the four mpounying bolt pattern (See Figure 22). Lift floor mat and lay template in on floor. The pattern will have to be rotated enough that the stand will point toward the operator and the four mounting holes marked (See Figure 22 & 23). It is important that the template be center of the hole you drilled in the floor Figure 21 mat,

Test Fit Valve control cable stand. With the floor mat lifted out of the way test the valve control stand for the proper direction. Do this before drilling the four mounting bolts. The valve mount stand should point toward where the operators Right arm and hand will be when he is seated in the operators seat of the tractor.

3.

Drill holes for valve control stand. When satisfied stand will point in the correct direction check under cab for any object that may be hit or damaged by drill bits. Drill the four mounting holes through the floor only NOT the floor mat (See Figure 24).

4.

Install Valve Control Stand through floor Mat. The valve control stand will stick through the first hole of the floor mat (See Figure 25). This will be done by lifting floor mat and insert stand through from the bottom.

5.

Install four mounting bolts for control stand. Install the four mounting bolts through the controls stand and the floor of the cab with the nuts on the bottom side. Make certain that the bolts and nuts will not be rubbing any of the components under the cab and damage them. Move or insulate any item under cab floor that would rub against the bolts. The floor mat will need to be held up while tightening these bolts.

Figure 24

6.

Install Wire Harness through floor Mat. The Wire harness will come to you with the on / off switches attached, these switches will need to be removes to Push the Wire Harness up through the floor and boot cover (See Figure 23).

7.

Insert Cables up through Boot Cover. Mark the cables as to which is which on the control valve as they need to be connected in the same order on the inside of the cab as they are connected to the control valve (See Figure 26).

Joystick , Valve & Control Cables 8.

Reinstall switches and Switch mounting bracket . Reconnect the switches and the mounting brackets back to the wire harness (See Figure 26, 29 & 30).

9.

Mark Which Cable is Which. It is important that each cable be marked as to which one it is in relation ship to the valve. Start with the cable closest to the engine and mark it 1, next mark 2 (See Figure 10 & 27). These marked cables will make a difference when mounting the control cable handle assemblies to the mounting bracket.

10.

Locate Control Stand Cable Control Mounting Brackets. There will be six pieces that will bolt to the control stand. Ist. Pivot plate Weldment (P/N 02961489), 2 nd. Pivot Plate Mount (P/N 02971190), 3rd. Joystick Extension Plate (P/N 02971189), 4 th. Arm Rest Bracket (P/N 02971188), 5 th. Switch Mount Plate (P/N 02971191) and 6 th Arm Rest Assembly (P/N 02971260). Locate these parts and lay them aside for assembly to the valve control stand (See Figure 28). NOTE: When installing these components they will need to be installed together as they shaft the same mounting bolts. The control Cabels will need to connectes to the control cable remote handles befor connecting brackets. (See Figure 29, 30 & 31).

Joystick , Valve & Control Cables 11. Each controller assembly comes fully assembled. All required hardware etc. is included. The control cables are not included with the control handles and should be ordered separately. The Controller must face forward as shown or controls will be backward (See Figure 25) 12. To attach the cable, manipulate the controller handle so that the attachment nut is exposed as shown. Remove the lower most nut and screw from the controller housing. Thread the cable nut into the controller attachment nut and tighten. (See Figure 26)

13. Allow the controller handle to return to neutral.

Tractor Front

Slide the cable guide tube into the control housing and reinstall and tighten the housing screw.

14. Check the operation of the spool, cable and controller. Some adjustment at the valve end may be required too ensure that the spool returns to neutral when the controller is in the neutral position. (See Figure 27)

15. The control lever assemblies utilizes a small

Figure 29

spring to make up for free play in the cable to valve connection. The control valve spool spring provides the centering capabilities of the controller and the valve spool. Lack of centering at the controller is normally attributed to poor adjustment at the valve to cable connection or binding of the cables due to poor routing.

16. The control lever assemblies will bolt together to form a group of handles, there will be 4 handles bolted together along with the switch mounting brackets. (See Figure 28 & 29) The switches will mount to these brackets. Dual Wings models will have two switches. The switch for the left wing mount on the left and switch for the right wing mounts on the right (See Figure 28 & 29). The same two long bolts that go through cable control handles will go through switch brackets.

Figure 30

17.

Install Pivot Plate Weldment to Valve Stand The pivot plate weldment (P/N 02961489) will bolt to the valve mount stand. There are 5 holes in pivot plate weldment, this allows for the adjustment up and down by mounting indifferent holes. (See Figure 32).

18.

Install Pivot Plate Mount to Pivot Plate Weldment. Install pivot plate mount (P/N 02971190) to the pivot plate weldment. The pivot plate weldment has slotted holes. This allows the pivot mount to turn for adjustment Left to Right (See Figure 32).

Install Switch Mount Bracket & Arm Rest Bracket. The Switch Mount Bracket (P/N 02971191) and Arm Rest Bracket (P/N 02971188) will be mounted with the same bolts that connect the control cable handle assembly together. These bolts are long and will slide through switch mount bracket, Arm rest mount bracket, Joystick extension bracket (if used) and then the cable assemblies will slide onto bolts (See Figure 33 & 34)

20.

Install Cable control Handle Assembly. The control cable assemblies slide over the three mounting bolts that are installed through the mounting brackets from step 19. The first cable to be installed will be the Right Wing Lift Cylinder, the next controller is the Right wing tilt cylinder. The controls need to be installed this way to match the operation instruction decal (See Figure 33 & 34).

21.

Install Padded Arm Rest. The padded arm rest (P/N 02971260) will bolt on with slotted holes. This will allow the arm rest to be adjusted for height.

P/N 02971190

22.

Adjust Cable Control Handles. The handles will have some adjustment Left and Right, up and down by loosening the mounting bolts of the pivot mount. These adjustments will usually be changed after assembly to suit the individual operator. It is helpful when possible to get the operator to test fit these adjustments with you. (See Figure 32, 33 & 34). The handles of controlers are adjusted at the valve mount plate (See Figure 35).

Wire Harness Connections:

Tractor Starter

1.

Connect Wire Harness to Tractor Starter. The wires to the starter from the off on switches will need to be connected to the tractor near the started connections (See Figure 43, 44 , 45 46 & 47). All see the wire / harness schematic on the following pages. Consult the Tractor Repair Manual for wiring schematic of Tractor.

2. Check all Wire Harness Routing. Inspect all of the wire harness, make certain the all portions of wire harness that have been installed is tied up and out of the way of folding components or any thing that may damage them (See Figure 44, 45, 46 & 47).

Figure 43

3. Wires from the safety switch must be routed close to cutterhousing side sheet and lift frame pivot points. This will prevent wires from being stretched and broken when cutterhousing is raised or lowered to maximum positions. NOTE: Route wires in such a manner to prevent interference with the operation of tractor or INTERSTATER. Ensure that wires DO NOT lay against anything which could wear through insulation and cause a short circuit. After connecting all wires, wrap wires with flexguard tubing. Neatly gather hydraulic hoses and flexguard tubing and strap together using plastic ties.

8.

Slip clutch is incorporated in the PTO driveline. It is designed to slip, absorb the shock load, and protect the driveline. It is important that the clutch lining plates slip when an obstacle or load heavier than clutch setting is encountered. Therefore, if the machine sits outside longer than 30 days and is exposed to rain and/or humid air it is important to make sure that the clutch lining plates are not rusted/corroded together. Before using the mower use the following procedure to make sure the clutch will slip and give the overload protection required. (See Figure 13) This is a required step because the driveline has been sitting and may be stuck. A. B. C.

Loosen nuts on springs until the springs can freely rotate, yet remain secure on bolts. Attach mower to tractor and start the tractor. Set the engine speed at 1200 RPM. Mark outer plates with marker, paint or any form that will work for you to tell if the compo nents of the clutch slipped. Engage the PTO (approximately one second) and then quickly disengage it. The friction lining plates should break loose (check the mark). Turn tractor off and tighten the nuts on the springs to their original position of 1-5/16" compressed spring length.

Section 6 - 4

Rear Three Point Mower 9.

Slip clutch is incorporated in the PTO driveline. It is designed to slip, absorb the shock load, and protect the driveline. After the first hour of operation, the slip clutch should be checked for overheating. After this first check, the slip clutch should be checked weekly or anytime there is overheating. To adjust the slip clutch, tighten the spring bolts 1/8 (maximum) turn at a time. Bolts should NEVER be adjusted to the point where the springs are compressed solid. The slip clutch should be checked periodically and adjusted to compensate for wear. The lining plates are 1/8" thick when new. Replace after 1/32" wear. If the mower has been idle for an extended period of time, or in wet weather, before operating check to be sure the friction lining plates are not frozen or rusted together. Should this freezing occur refer to the procedure described in the "Seasonal Clutch Maintenance" section on the next page. There are four friction lining plates in the slip clutch. These should be checked weekly for oil or grease, wear, and moisture which could cause corrosion on the drive plates. (See Step 8) NOTE: Above

Initial Start-Up Procedure INITIAL START-UP PROCEDURE: 1. Check all nuts and hex head bolts to ensure all are tight and all lock washers are fully compressed (flattened). 2. Check all hoses and hydraulic connections. Make certain they are secure. 3. Inspect all moving parts and make certain that no wires or hoses will be caught or pinched when the tractor or the INTERSTATER is in operation. Tie down loose wires and hoses. Thoroughly grease the INTERSTATER and install a lubricap on each grease fitting. Refer to 4. the Operation and Maintenance Section. 5. Jack front of tractor up enough to allow axle to pivot through its full range. While turning wheels through their limits, right and left, swing them up and down. Look for interference between tires and any part of the INTERSTATER. If interference occurs, shims (not furnished) must be welded to axle pivot stop or steering arm to limit the movement enough to avoid interference. Tractors with an adjustable front axle may require an outward adjustment of the wheels. 6. To fill the INTERSTATER reservoir with new, clean hydraulic oil, follow the steps below. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Section for specifications. (See Figure 16) A. With a hydraulic jack raise the right side of the tractor. This will tilt the tank and allow only a minimum amount of air when filling. B. Avoid hydraulic contamination by filtering the hydraulic oil while filling the hydraulic tank. C. Filter buggies or carts are commercially available for hydraulic system cleanup. These consist of a high-efficiency, high-capacity filter, a circulating pump, a drive motor, and hoses for connecting the overhauled machine’s hydraulic system. D. After the first 10 hours of operation, replace the hydraulic filter with a new one. An extra Filter Element is provided for you. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Section for instruction.

7.

After the Interstater mower is completely assembled to the tractor and with the wings on the ground, fill the mower hy draulic tank above the oil level sight gauge approximately 5" or 1" below the top of the tank.

8.

With mower ON/OFF switches in “ON” position and tractor fuel cut off, crank engine for about 30 to 45 seconds to allow oil to fill pumps and motors. Check the oil level in the sight gauge. If no oil is seen add oil to bring the level up to the sight gauge. NOTE: Do not fill the tank with oil above the level of the sight gauge. Over filling the tank with oil after the initial filling may re sult in oil being discharged through the air filter on top of the hydraulic tank. Start the tractor and run it for 2 minutes and then turn it off. Again check the oil level in the sight gauge. If the oil level is in the sight gauge, the unit is ready to run. If no oil is seen, add oil to bring the level up to the sight gauge.

Initial Start-Up Procedure CAUTION

ROTATING KNIVES!

Remove all foreign objects and stand clear of cutter units. DO NOT GET NEAR!

NOTE: On tractor hydraulic powered circuit only, make certain that there is full flow from tractor hydraulic system to control valve. Refer to tractor manual.

9.

After hydraulic system is fully charged and functioning properly, switch cutter units on, then speed engine up to 540 RPM PTO speed. Maintain this speed for about 5 minutes. Check complete INTERSTATER, look for any leaks, loose connections, or anything that could cause premature wear or failure. FINAL CHECK Run INTERSTATER for about 1/2 hour at full speed. Check for leaks and vibrations. Frequently check oil temperature. Make certain it does not exceed 180 deg. NOTE: When raising wings, make certain there is no interference with mower, frame, cylinders or tractor. Lift wings slowly. CAUTION: DO NOT leave unit unattended, and COMPLY WITH ALL WARNING DECALS.

If unit starts to make unusual noise, stop unit and check oil level. Also check for frothy oil which would indicate a leak on suction side of system.

Important notes: 1.

This kit is designed for tractors equipped with a vertical exhaust. Other exhaust styles may require modification at the dealer/customer’s expense.

2.

Right hand only models can be ordered with an 88" offset right 8.5" or a 96" offset right 12.5" rear head. Only one lift chain is recommended for offset heads.

3.

Due to the frame offset, we recommend adding a 500# wheel weight, calcium chloride or other suitable counterweight to the opposing rear wheel.

4.

The right hand steps may need to be removed for lift frame and/or head transport clearance. Ingress/egress on the right is otherwise blocked by the control stand.

5.

The canopy mirror kit option is only designed to fit the Perry Co. brand canopy that we market. Other canopies may require modification of the mounting bracket at the dealer/customer’s expense. Please see the Switchblade menu for photos.
