Introduction

What is an Initial Training Network (ITN) • Horizon 2020 Marie Curie Action • A network of PhD researchers (ESRs) and supervising staff embedded in industrial and academic research & development groups • Shared common vision for tackling a challenging field of research & development • An instrument to train a new generation of world class AWE researchers with a high value to industry

AWEC 2015

4

Introduction

Why an ITN for AWE? Airborne Wind Energy still faces major technological hurdles, e.g. • reliability and robustness, particularly with respect to longduration operation • full automation of the AWE system operation • scaling up

Tethered inflatable wing for ground based traction power conversion

AWEC 2015

6

Introduction

Expected breakthroughs • state-of-the modelling and simulation frameworks for rigid and flexible wing AWE systems, • optimised systems for launching, power production, and landing of rigid and flexible wings, • development and rapid deployment of new sensors and new estimation and control algorithms.
