The global sugar industry is passing through an exciting phase of transformation with sugarcane and other sugar crops emerging as major source of sugar, bio-fuel, green energy, paper and pulp, bio-plastics, bio-polymers and other related products. With sugar production and productivity poised to reach new heights to take advantage of these opportunities, IAPSIT has been instrumental in playing a catalytic role in the holistic development of sugar and integrated industries, especially in the developing countries, through its conferences, publications, exchange programs for research personnel etc. This International Conference IS-2014 on “Green Technologies for Sustainable Growth of Sugar and Integrated Industries in developing Countries” is another significant step in this direction. Our main focus in this conference, IS-2014 will be the new and emerging technologies which can harness the green power of sugar crops. The IS-2014 in Nanning celebrates a decade of service of IAPSIT to the global sugar industry. Looking back, we are overwhelmed by the immense opportunities this association has brought about through meetings, mentoring and sharing. Our journey of excellence started from this beautiful city of Nanning in 2004 - we travelled to Guilin in 2006, Egypt in 2008, India in 2011 and again gather together at Nanning in 2014, to remember and thank all those who have mattered in this remarkable journey. In these ten years, IAPSIT has grown into a global association. China is the world’s third largest sugar producing country after Brazil and India, with its annual white sugar production touching 11-14 MT in recent years. In addition, a large quantity of pulp, paper, alcohol, yeast, xylitol, chemicals, bio-manure, animal feed, bio-electricity etc. are also produced by the sugar mills. Production of sugarcane juice for consumption is also a small scale industry in China. During the past decade, more than 90 % of the sugar produced was from sugarcane. Guangxi, the dominant sugarcane and sugar producing region in China, has played a significant role in making China the third largest sugar producer in the world. Thus, this is by all means, a befitting venue for commemorating a decade of glorious service of IAPSIT to the sugar industry. We are happy that IAPSIT is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an International Conference IS-2014: Green Technologies for Sustainable Growth of Sugar & Integrated Industries in Developing Countries at Nanning, China from November 25-28, 2014. We are sure this conference will help in making us aware of the advancements in sugar crops and related industries in developing countries. This International Conference aims to discuss in detail, the challenges facing the sugar industry and the future prospects, taking into account the role of different sugar crops in the sugar industry in developing countries. This collection of articles is a sketch of the research and developmental activities and future prospects in the area of sugar crops, at a global level. A word of thanks to Dr. M. Swapna, Dr. Priyanka Singh and Mr Prasanth Gupta for their efforts in editing and compiling the articles and in bringing this publication to its present form. We hope that this Conference will provide an excellent opportunity for researchers, technologists, extension officers, industrialists, policy makers and other stakeholders to come together and share their views and experiences, for the benefit of the global sugar and allied industries We welcome all the IS-2014 delegates in the green city of Nanning in November 2014. To constitute a forum at international level for bringing together activities of individuals and organisations involved in sugar crops and related industry activities; To develop international research/development linkages and disseminate up-to-date technologies in the field of sugar production/by-product utilization/effluent treatment/alcohol production and environmental management through rapid information system; To promote and undertake Research and Development and Extension Services in the field of sugar crops and value added products; To explore new areas related to cane production technologies, cane developmental activity and logistic management; To propagate utilization of non-conventional and renewable sources of energy and development of improved systems and devices in sugar industry for sugar processing including fermentation and effluent plant technologies; To offer recognition and awards to professional groups and individuals for attainment of excellence in the field of sugar crops and related industries; To interact with government agencies, scientific organisations and NGOs to promote and protect interests of sugar crop growers and producers; To organise symposia, seminars and workshops and bring out publications to meet the objectives of the society. Sugar Tech is the official journal of SSRP. Fifty issues in sixteen volumes of Sugar Tech have already been published in last seven years. We have been receiving research articles from all over the world. Concerned libraries from all over the World have been subscribing Sugar Tech journal. Sugar Tech has come to be a leading international journal with its unique quality and standard. We have been covering current references on sugarcane, sugarbeet, industry and technology along with addresses of corresponding authors, so that interested person could contact them as per their own interest. Sugar Tech is being indexed in CAB International, UK; INSDOC, India and Elsevier Biobase, Netherlands and Chemical Abstracts, USA. Message Sugarcane and integrated industries have special socioeconomic importance in the developing countries due to their diversified multi-utility products of mass consumption and potential to generate employment in the developing countries. Recently, sugar industry is playing a complementary role in automobile and energy sectors which will tremendously reduce our dependence on fossil fuel. These socio-economic and environmental benefits have led to renewed interest and investment in sugar sector, especially in developing countries of Southeast Asia and Africa. The future growth and profitability of existing and new sugar complexes will depend on sugar crops productivity, sustainability, marketing and diversification on long term basis. In this regard, the agro-industrial processes, development of high-value products through bio-energy approach, green chemistry, production of bio-ethanol & bio-electricity etc. need to be optimized. This diversification is bound to have an impact on the socio-economic scenario of the sugar producing countries, the majority of which are the developing nations. The IAPSIT is concerned about the current status of global sugar industry, especially developing nations where production, productivity and sugar recovery per se is below economic threshold level. The cost of sugarcane production has registered a meteoric rise in recent years, exceeding US$ 50 per ton in some countries. Our association has been in the fore-front in facilitating linkages and networking among the various stakeholders, researchers and policy makers to improve economic health of sugar crops farmers and industry through introduction of new innovations and technologies in the industry. This International Conference on “Green Technologies for Sustainable Improvement of Sugar & Integrated Industries in Developing Countries” is an ideal platform to discuss in detail, the challenges facing the sugar industry and the future prospects, for sustainable improvement of sugar and integrated industries in the developing countries. This compendium of research articles and technologies is a brief account of the on-going research and developmental activities in the sugar industry and how some of these could be implemented to augment sugar and energy production in a sustainable manner. Message Sugar crops especially sugarcane, has tremendous significance not only as source of sugar and sweeteners, but also as source of sustainable energy and other value added products. Preface Ever since its inception in 2004, IAPSIT is committed to sustainable development of sugar and integrated industries in developing countries through introduction and dissemination of Green Technologies with the help of conferences, meetings, workshops, journal publication, newsletters and exchange of professionals. The organization of IS-2014 Conference on Green Technologies for Sustainable Growth of Sugar and Integrated Industries in developing Countries is one such positive step in this direction. Sugarcane is endowed with Green Energy which is made available to common people in the form of bio-fuels, bio-electricity, bio-plastics, bio-compost, sugars as well as its invigorating impact on soil and climate. In IS-2014 conference, new and emerging technologies to harness the green power of sugar crops will be our main focus. The IS-2014 in Nanning marks the completion of a decade of IAPSIT in its service to global sugar industry. Looking back, we are amazed by the unexpected blessings and opportunities this association has brought to us through meetings, mentoring and sharing. Our journey of excellence started from this beautiful city of Nanning in 2004, we travelled to Guilin in 2006, Egypt in 2008, India in 2011 and now gather together at Nanning again for thanksgiving. In these ten years, IAPSIT has become a global association. China is the world's third largest sugar producing country after Brazil and India. The annual production of white sugar in China during recent year has touched 11-14 MT. In addition a large quantity of pulp, paper, alcohol, yeast, xylitol, chemicals, bio-manure, animal feed, bioelectricity are also produced by the sugar mills. Production of drinking sugarcane juice is also a small scale industry in China. During the past decade, more than 90 % of the sugar production was contributed by sugarcane. Sugarcane is a major crop in southern China, especially in Guangxi, Yunnan and western Guangdong. Guangxi is the dominant sugarcane and sugar producer region in China. It is the contribution of Guangxi which makes China the third biggest sugar producer in the world. We are happy that IAPSIT has been celebrating its 10th anniversary with an international conference IS-2014: Green Technologies for Sustainable Growth of Sugar & Integrated Industries in Developing Countries at Nanning, China from November 25-28, 2014. We are sure this conference will help in understanding the overall development in sugar crops and related industries in developing countries. This International Conference aims to discuss in detail, the challenges facing the sugar industry and the future prospects, taking into account the role of different sugar crops in the sugar industry in developing countries. This collection of articles is a sketch of the research and developmental activities and future prospects pertaining to various sugar crops at a global level. We hope that this Conference will provide an excellent networking opportunity for researchers, technologists, extension officers, industrialists, policy makers etc., for meaningful deliberations through sharing of views and experiences, thereby benefitting the sugar and integrated industries.
