The year has got off to a great start, thanks to the record sales and the huge number of manufacturers’ awards achieved by our Motor Group, supplemented by our winning of the recent Barclays Bank Award for Growth by Established Companies from the Cambridge News. We can also take great pride in being the largest private Motor Group in England, although this gives us a huge amount to live up to. Our Aerospace and Defence Group achieved two highly prestigious awards,

one from Boeing as a Supplier of the Year for our performance on the supply and quality of our integral fuel tanks for the P8 programme, and the other from Aviation Week as the MRO of the year for being a Military Centre of Excellence. We also gained huge accolades from the Royal Air Force following the very sad Disbandment of 216 Squadron, which we have supported so successfully for nearly 30 years. Although sadly the original C-130K fleet has finally been retired after 47 years of service, it is excellent news that we have gained extra work on the servicing of the C-130J fleet at Cambridge, and that our teams are achieving the return of these aircraft to a very high standard and ahead of schedule. The Wing proposals are proceeding through the laborious planning process and we hope that in due course they will add a really worthwhile development for the City of Cambridge, of which we can be enormously proud. Our reputation with our customers and suppliers is higher than ever, thanks to the great work of all members of our teams

and I thank you very much for all that you are doing. When I say “goodbye” to staff who have worked in the company for over 20 years, I often regret that I had not seen them at work, but am reminded that we have grown so fast that much of this personal contact has to be through the Chief Executives of our businesses and the leaders of our teams, through whom the private company outlook of our Group, spreads to all corners of our company. I would like to finish by adding my congratulations and delight to the recent developments which are highlighted in Robert’s column and also to wish you all every success in this last part of the year as we head towards the end of 2014.

Wear Your Uniform to Work Day On 25th June members of the Reserve Forces wore their Service uniforms to work with pride in celebration of the annual Uniform to Work Day, in the run up to the sixth annual Armed Forces Day on Saturday, 28th June. In the photograph, Honorary Air Commodore for 2623 Squadron, Sir Michael Marshall is photographed with Flying Officer Chris Priest (PTVR), Officer Commanding B Flight on 2623 Squadron RAuxAF Regiment and Corporal Gareth Rundle (PTVR) - 6th Army Air Corps. Chris works in HR for the Marshall Motor Group and Gareth as an Airport Operative for Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group. Thousands of Reservists from across the country hung up their usual work clothes and proudly donned their Service uniforms to demonstrate the huge contribution that ordinary citizens can make to the Armed Forces. It also allowed Reservists to show their employers how much they value the support they receive. Many of those wearing their uniforms will have been deployed on at least one tour of duty, and their invaluable experience and skills gained through their Service jobs directly benefit employers.

ATC Anniversary Celebrations In 1939, before the Air Training Corps was founded, Sir Arthur Marshall, the then Mayor of the City of Cambridge, Alderman A A Spalding, assisted by Alderman Saville Peck, established No. 104 (City of Cambridge) Squadron Air Cadets of the Air Defence Cadet Corps. The Squadron has recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. Exercising a right bestowed on the Squadron when it was presented with the

Freedom of the City of Cambridge in May 1999 on the 60th Anniversary of its foundation, the Cadets paraded through Cambridge City Centre to mark the occasion. Dinner at Corpus Christi College in Cambridge followed the parade where, in a twist to the evening Christopher Walkinshaw, Chairman of the Squadron Civilian Commitee, is also Chairman of the Air League, the organisation which founded the Air Defence Cadet Corps!


Chief Executive’s Comments As part of our continued programme of improvement, I am really pleased that we have achieved an incredibly high response rate with the 2014 'Great Place to Work' survey through which every member of the Marshall Group was invited to give their feedback on the business as a whole and the team in which you work. We are looking forward to receiving the results over the next few weeks which will help us identify areas for improvement and put action plans into place. As the business goes forwards, your comments will effectively write the manual for our continuous improvement as a great place to work. As we say in our Values book, it is all about customers and our people. Our Marshall ADG apprentice programme is flourishing with an intake of 22 people this year, bringing our total of active apprentices to 66. Our commitment to ongoing development continues and this year we will again invest in excess of £3m in

ongoing training and development. On top of this, our ground breaking leadership development programme is in full swing with its second phase. At all levels, we are doing our best to bring out the best in our people and make our company a place where we can all develop and fulfil our ambitions. We are continuing to work extremely hard to grow the Order Book in our engineering businesses. In particular, I would like to congratulate the Land Systems team for bringing in a trio of fabulous orders for containerised systems for the British Army. Advanced Composites in Kirkbymoorside is also on the move and we are seeing the benefits of long term investment in state-ofthe-art composite production techniques with an impressive order for missile launch tubes from MBDA. Meanwhile the ADG team is flat out trying to secure a number of C-130 contracts from the UK, France, and many

other countries throughout the world. Motor Group is continuing its fantastic expansion and we are absolutely thrilled to become one of a small handful of companies that holds franchises for all the major German premium manufacturers, following the acquisition of Astles BMW and MINI and Crystal Motor Group Nissan. I am also delighted that CityJet has chosen Cambridge Airport as a base to launch two new routes; to Amsterdam and Dublin. These routes are proving popular but we still have a way to go to prove the commercial viability of this great service but we are on the right track.

The winner of the under 25 age group was Cambridge University PhD student Richard Stephens, with a presentation on the subject of ‘Designing a revolutionary solar vehicle’. The winner of the 25 – under 30 age group was Cambridge University PhD student Dhiren Mistry, with a presentation on the subject of ‘Mixing in turbulent jets’. The competition is supported by Marshall ADG with a £100 winners’ prize in each age group. This year the RAeS Cambridge Branch was honoured to be gifted with a named trophy from Sir Michael Marshall, to be awarded to the overall winner of the competition. The Trophy was presented to Richard Stephens by Sir Michael at a presentation ceremony held in June, where Sir Michael also congratulated each competitor in person and presented each with their certificates. Family & Friends Open Day Sunday 29th June Despite being very soggy, some 5,000 people braved the weather to enjoy the Marshall Family & Friends Open Day on 29th June. The event, celebrating 105 years since the Company first formed and 85 years since its venture into aviation, saw many activities for all ages and gave visitors the opportunity to tour the aircraft hangars and see some of the work the Marshall companies undertake. As a consequence of the wet weather the air display was somewhat shorter than had been anticipated but the crowds still enjoyed a varied and memorable display.

Boeing honour Marshall ADG for exceptional performance Earlier this year Boeing presented Marshall ADG with a Supplier of the Year award for its performance on the P-8 maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft. Sir Roger Bone, President of Boeing in the UK spoke of the award: “I am delighted to be able to congratulate Marshall ADG on this award for their high-quality performance on the Boeing P-8 maritime patrol aircraft. Marshall is one of the historic names in the UK aerospace industry and a long-term partner of Boeing, so I am particularly pleased that they have been recognised.” Boeing has more than 23,000 suppliers around the world and Marshall ADG was one of only 15 businesses and one university to receive a Supplier of the Year award, presented during a ceremony in Chicago.

Steve Fitz-Gerald, Chief Executive of Marshall ADG, added: “We are thrilled to have won this prestigious award – it recognises the dedication, determination and focus on delivering on our promises. For over a century we have consistently put our customers first, and this emphasis will continue.” The P-8 maritime patrol aircraft is a military derivative of Boeing’s Next Generation 737800 and total orders for the P-8 platform could exceed 200, worldwide. Steve continues: “Working in the true spirit of partnership with Boeing, we have delivered outstanding levels of engineering excellence to support the most advanced maritime patrol aircraft in the world – this is something of which we are all truly proud.”

UK MoD select Marshall ADG for Deployable Infrastructure Support Support for a range of containerised deployable systems for the UK Ministry of Defence is to be provided by Marshall ADG, with G3 Systems as our partner, following the award of an enabling contract. Named ‘Project Amphora’, this framework contract will last up to seven years and will enable numerous and varied equipments to continue to operate successfully as Force 2020 develops. At the heart of Project Amphora is a contractor logistic support (CLS) service which will ensure that the deployable shelter systems are fully supported to demanding operational levels. “Marshall ADG and G3 Systems worked very closely developing a unique and highly responsive offering before jointly bidding in a well competed bidding process,” said Steve Fitz-Gerald, Chief Executive of Marshall ADG. “The transition period for the contract to providing a full operational capability is very short and as the suppliers of the majority of the UK’s shelter infrastructure, we were able to submit a low risk, fully compliant solution which gave

the MoD confidence that operational capability would be achieved in the required time frame at an acceptable cost,” added Steve. The contract includes the support of a number of deployable systems ranging from AFV Power Pack Repair Facilities, to Deployable Engineering Workshops to C4ISTAR working environments. Work on the programme is starting immediately and full operating capability is expected in the next few months.


Auxiliary fuel tanks for Bombardier Q400 Marshall ADG and Bombardier Aerospace are developing an External Auxiliary Fuel System solution for the Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft. The solution, which will be available as an official Bombardier option, will provide up to an additional 10,000lb of fuel in two external pannier tanks allowing the aircraft to fulfill a whole range of missions requiring additional range and endurance, allowing this turboprop platform to be able to sustain operations of up to 12 hours*.

Marshall ADG is responsible for the design, development, manufacture and test of the auxiliary fuel system, and has pioneered innovative fuel systems and tanks for the Boeing P8 and the Airbus A318E as well as special mission modifications and integrations.

Proud supporters of National Apprenticeship Week... No. 10 visit Charlotte Bidwell (second year design apprentice in Land Systems) and Rob Butler, AeroAcademy Manager, visited 10 Downing Street in March for a reception in support of National Apprenticeship Week and a new Government initiative called Trailblazers – which gives employers added responsibility to pilot and test the development of new apprenticeships. Rob said: “It was a busy week supporting National Apprentice Week. AeroAcademy has been represented at the House of Commons, Admiralty House and 10 Downing Street. The invitations to attend such high profile events really demonstrate that our apprentice programmes and our apprentices are representative of some of the best in the country.

"Charlotte Bidwell has been a fine ambassador for Marshall and for women in engineering. I was proud to watch and listen as she discussed apprenticeships with Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg.” The reception was also used to encourage more women to consider a role in engineering, Charlotte said: “Being a woman in a maledominated environment is very daunting at first, however I get treated very much the same, which is great. I've been very fortunate to meet lots of other inspirational women engineers lately all of whom are very successful. I would strongly recommend a career in engineering to any woman and would like to advise those interested to just be brave and give it a shot.”

Certificate received for support of the Reserve Forces Marshall ADG has been awarded a certificate for its support of members of the Reserve Forces. The certificate was awarded by SaBRE (Supporting Britain's Reservists and Employers), an organisation that aims to build support for members of the Reserve Forces from employers, and was accepted by Jon Land, Senior HR Business Partner, who represented the company at an Employer’s Day at Carver Barracks, the home of 33 Regiment of Royal Engineers.

The Marshall Group has strong links with the armed forces and many of our people have served in the military. Due to our heritage and this connection Marshall ADG is proud to assist wider efforts to support returning servicemen and women. Jon said: “In light of the excellent support Marshall ADG provided to me during my call-up service to Afghanistan, I was very happy to receive the award on behalf of the company in recognition of the support we show the Reserve Forces.”

Key industry anniversaries to be embraced at BGAD Cambridge The UK’s 10th Business and General Aviation Day (BGAD) will be hosted by Cambridge International Airport on Tuesday, 23rd September, in association with European Business Air News - marking a significant (25th) anniversary this year. New for this year, Marshall Aviation Services, the business aviation arm of Marshall ADG, will be fully exploiting the relaxed networking opportunities with the launch of an aftershow dinner for visiting delegates and exhibitors in one of the famous Cambridge University dining halls. Marshall Aviation Services is itself planning a significant presence at the Show. As the exclusive sales distributor for the UK and Ireland for all Beechcraft piston and turboprop models, Marshall Aviation Services looks forward to showcasing several aircraft

models – both for sale and charter. It has also invited Beechcraft to optimise the day and make it a UK celebration of 50 years of Beechcraft production. CityJet launches Amsterdam and Dublin routes New double daily flights to service top two international markets and open increased long-haul connectivity. In May, Cambridge International Airport welcomed the launch of two new routes with leading European airline CityJet, connecting Cambridge and the East of England with Dublin and Amsterdam.

Both routes offer a double-daily service Monday-Friday and daily at weekends, operated by CityJet’s highly economical Fokker 50 aircraft, combining excellent service and reliability with the comfort of spacious legroom, leather seating, complimentary luggage allowance and refreshments. In addition to the direct flights, both routes have been specially configured to offer exceptional onward connectivity to worldwide destinations. Through CityJet’s close partnership with KLM, Air France, Delta and other partners, Cambridge passengers now have regular, well-timed flights not only to Ireland and Holland, but fast and frequent connecting service to cities including New York, Boston, Toronto, Washington DC, Chicago, Seattle, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo and many more key business and leisure destinations. Fred Olsen launches first ever travel outlet at an Airport Specialist travel and cruise agency Fred Olsen Travel has opened a new travel outlet at Cambridge International Airport. Having opened in August, in the check in area in the terminal, the new leisure and business travel store will mark the first time Fred Olsen Travel, which boasts seven High Street stores across East Anglia, has used a local airport as its base.


Brize Norton demonstrates Marshall ADG customer service values Marshall ADG has once again demonstrated excellence in customer service with its engineers sharing equipment with the RAF in Brize Norton. Personnel from the RAF No 99 Squadron Training Cell recently used the Marshall ADG Confined Space Training Rig (CSTR) as part of their Fuel Tank Entry Training Course.

The CSTR was introduced primarily for confined space familiarisation and fuel tank rescue drills by the HIOS Forward Maintenance Team engineers, but has now been made available by the Marshall ADG Management Team at Brize Norton for RAF training use at the base, with 99 Squadron being the first to take up the offer. The CSTR was manufactured from a section of C-130K outer wing and centre wing dry bay, mounted on a wheeled transit skate that provides a safe and realistic training environment to learn or refresh the skills required for working inside aircraft fuel tanks. 99 Squadron’s recently introduced Fuel Tank Entry Course sees the CSTR being an integral part of their future training and practice of emergency fuel tank rescue procedures. Training Cell Instructors have produced risk assessments, safe systems of work and local work instructions based on Marshall ADG documents to enable them to maximise use of the CSTR. Sergeant Pete Williams of the 99 Squadron Training Cell stated: “The CSTR is invaluable to our Fuel Tank Entry Training Course as it provides students with the realism of confined space working within a controlled and safe training environment.”

Wounded and injured soldiers visit Marshall ADG Marshall ADG hosted a visit from around 20 British Army soldiers from the Personnel Rehabilitation Centre in Colchester. It is expected that each of the soldiers will be medically discharged from the armed forces soon and their visit to Cambridge was part of a scheme to support their transition back into civilian life.

Marshall acquires new businesses Marshall Motor Group has acquired the entire share capital of the parent company of Astle BMW and MINI, Astle Motorrad and Crystal Motor Group.

As part of this acquisition Marshall has also gained the Crystal Motor Group Nissan businesses in Boston, Grantham and Lincoln, which builds greater depth on the Marshall representation with Nissan.

The acquisition marks Marshall Motor Group’s entry into the BMW and MINI network and includes the Astle BMW businesses in Scunthorpe and Grimsby, together with Mini in Grimsby and BMW motorcycles in Grimsby. Marshall is now part of an exclusive club, along with five other groups, representing all of the major German and British premium car brands.

Marshall has also recently acquired the Volvo business in Bishops Stortford from Regent Automotive Group and the Hammonds Land Rover business in Halesworth, situated between Ipswich and Norwich. These businesses will bring to seven the number of Volvo businesses in the Marshall portfolio, making Marshall the largest partner for Volvo in the UK. The addition of the Land Rover business will bring the number of Marshall Land Rover dealerships to six and is part of a wider strategic development to represent Land Rover in Suffolk.

Commenting on the acquisition, Motor Group Chief Executive, Daksh Gupta said: “This is an historically important acquisition for Marshall which fits perfectly with our stated strategy to grow with the right brand partners in the right locations. We are incredibly proud to be partnering with BMW for the first time and look forward to building a strong relationship with what is undoubtedly one of the most desirable prestige brands in the market.”

These new businesses will take the annualised turnover of Marshall to £1.2bn and lifts the Group’s portfolio to 75 franchised dealerships. The entire work force from these businesses has transferred to Marshall, bringing the total number of colleagues at Marshall to around 2,300.

Marshall Motor Group has been presented with the prestigious Barclays Award at the Cambridge Business Excellence Awards, held in the Great Hall at King’s College, Cambridge. Cambridge is the leading centre of global high-tech businesses, many of them household names or providers of the technology which powers our everyday lives, such as ARM, the world’s largest producer of microchips, whose products are embedded in almost every portable electronic device in the world. To be recognised in this way by the Cambridge business community is huge news

The judges particularly commended Marshall for more than trebling the size of the Group during the economic downturn, becoming a national group and funding all of the growth internally, without drawing down any additional capital from the Shareholders. The business was also selected as a finalist in the Business of the Year category; the headline award which recognises locally-based companies who led the way during 2013 in terms of growth, diversification or consolidation.

Motor Holdings breaks the £BILLION barrier! Marshall Motor Holdings has broken the £1 billion barrier in its rolling 12-month turnover, making history in the automotive industry. Only 8 companies within the industry have ever achieved this milestone and Marshall is only the second privately-owned company in Great Britain ever to do so, making this landmark even more special. This amazing result has been achieved at a blistering pace, with a growth of 400% over the last 5 years; taking the company from underlying sales of £250m to £1bn. The transaction which took the business just over the £1bn mark was a used Volvo S80 D5 Executive sold by Grantham Volvo to Mr Dudley. As a billion is 1000 million, Mr Dudley, the ‘billion pound customer’ received a £1000 prize. Grantham Volvo, being the ‘billion pound dealership’ received £1000 for the team to go and celebrate being the ones who broke the Billion Pound threshold. Festival of Speed On 26th June Marshall Leasing entertained over sixty people across two days to an action-packed treat at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed. This trip marked the ninth year that Marshall Leasing has entertained clients at the event. This year, to enhance the experience, the day was partnered with Volvo and Citroen, which included refreshments, lunch and drives ‘up the hill’. The Festival’s central display (pictured left) was quite a talking point - the sculpture, weighing 150 tonnes, towered 26 metres over the Goodwood House! After taking in the sights around the festival, and watching a few customers take to the track, it was time for lunch in the Volvo hospitality stand. Graeme Oswald, from Volvo Car UK said, “On behalf of Volvo UK, I would like to thank Marshall Leasing for the opportunity to meet so many of their customers at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It was a pleasure to sponsor the event and great to hear the enthusiasm around our new Volvo V60 Polestar, which was attracting attention on the hillclimb. Marshall Leasing wins Honda Fleet Deal Leading financial services provider Forester Life has put its faith in British-built cars, placing a significant order for 130 Honda

Civic 1.6 i-DTEC models for its corporate fleet. This new arrangement will see Honda (UK) become the sole fleet supplier to Foresters for the next three years, marking the return to a partnership between the two companies which began in 2003. The new Civics are being supplied through the Marshall Motor Group with the arrangement brokered on behalf of Foresters by contract hire specialists, Marshall Leasing. Jonathan Ross, Sales & Marketing Director at Marshall Leasing says of supporting Foresters in meeting their fleet requirements: "We've dedicated ourselves to making the experience as easy as possible, both for those making the fleet decisions at

Foresters and for the drivers themselves. We're delighted that Foresters are 'buying British' with their choice of Honda." To celebrate the delivery of the first five cars to Foresters, Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) Honda Yuasa Racing driver, Matt Neal, handed over the keys to Foresters staff at Marshall Honda in Narborough, Leicestershire. Matt is a big fan of the Civic himself, having enjoyed many successes in it during seven BTCC seasons since 2003, culminating in seeing the car win the championship for the last two years. Kylie’s No. 1 for Motability Kylie Warwick from Cambridge Ford has won an award for being the best Motability Specialist in the UK. She was selected by a panel and was judged not on any particular performance criteria but on actual engagement with customers, service levels, feedback received and her overall attitude towards the scheme and her customers. There are over 10,000 Motability specialists in the UK and, for Kylie to come top, is testament to her hard work and commitment. North West team wins top award in Barcelona The Motor Group’s Mercedes Benz market area in the North West (MA5) has been presented with the Mercedes Benz Aftersales Team of the Year Award at an event in Barcelona. The award was presented for an excellent balanced performance in a number of key KPIs, but in particular customer service where the business finished in the top 3; this is a huge improvement as MA5 had been in the bottom 3 for a number of years prior to the Company’s acquisition of the business in 2012.

School of Dreams Both primary and secondary schools across the country are utilising knowledge from the business world to teach their pupils about the world of work and introduce them to some of the local employers in their area. Businesses are welcoming this move as it gives them a chance to teach youngsters what skills they may need when it comes to finding a job. Marshall Honda in Hull has supported a workshop, ‘School of Dreams’, run by Honda at the Anlaby Road South school in West Hull to offer a free thinking workshop for students aged 9 – 13 years. Along with the students and teachers from the School, members of the team from Marshall Honda took part in the workshop.


Marshall Fleet Solutions You may, or may not, have heard of one of the Marshall Group’s companies, Marshall Fleet Solutions (MFS). MFS has 250 employees and a turnover of £31m. Members of the organising committee for the Marshall Family & Friends Open Day, which celebrated 105th Anniversary of the Company, have presented Sir Michael Marshall with a silver plated model of the Avro Vulcan Bomber. The model was found in an antique shop by Norman Highnam (pictured centre) of Marshall Fleet Solutions and apprentices under Rob Butler manufactured a new base and refurbished the model. Company employees and their families and friends enjoyed a fantastic flying display at the Open Day on 29th June, but the weather was very poor and the Vulcan did not display. However, in view of Marshall’s long relationship with the Vulcan and all the work it took to put XH558, the sole flying Vulcan, back into the air, it was felt by the Organising Committee that this was a very appropriate memento for Sir Michael. Marshall Network supports local Education Programme Over the last 6 months Marshall Network has been supporting local charity Romsey Mill. However, unlike the usual fundraising support given to charities, the Network has been using its various professional skills to help. Katie Chantler from Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group HR provides HR support to the charity’s trustees, and in this article we find out how a number of the Marshall ADG engineers have used their maths and physics knowledge to support a small STEM activity.

The first of these activities was a site tour hosted by HR Business Partner Jon Land, followed by an informative discussion with two Marshall ADG employees; Gyorgy Lorincz, IT Support, and Apprentice, Chris Clarke. Jon provided the students with an insight into what happens behind hangar doors and they were also fortunate enough to get up close to a variety of aircraft such as the Cessna Citations and C130J Hercules. Chris and Gyorgy took time to describe their job roles and responsibilities within Marshall ADG, telling the students that an academic route is by no means the only path to a successful career. The second activity was arranged and delivered in collaboration with Virtual Aviation using their state of the art Boeing 737 Flight Simulator. The session started with an introduction into the importance of flight deck communication and teamwork by Michael Dales. He highlighted how developments within co-pilot communication had positively affected the accident rate over the years. Captain Robert from Ryan Air then took the students through some of the day-to-day procedures pilots experience. The third part of this session was organised by Ian Rogers and his team within Air Traffic Control (ATC) who explained the main functions of ATC and how their jobs differ from day-to-day.

Throughout February, Marshall Network extended its support of Romsey Mill’s Alternative Education Programme, by delivering three unique experiences to four students aged 16-18. The aims of the activities were to highlight the importance of communication and teamwork and to develop the skills required to achieve this.

Very positive feedback was received from the students, particularly highlighting the rapport developed with the organisers of the sessions, Aaron Kabasobokwe and Adel Halawa from Marshall Network. Romsey Mill has requested a fourth session and Marshall Network intends to develop the relationship even further, making it more sustainable by providing additional support in the future. In turn this will support and enhance employee personal development, Marshall ADG’s corporate and social responsibilities, in addition to raising the awareness and support for Romsey Mill.

Chariots of Fire 2014 This year’s annual Chariots of Fire Race will take place on Sunday, 21st September. The Chariots of Fire is one of Cambridgeshire’s largest annual charity events. The race follows in the footsteps of the famous film, taking its scenic route through the streets and colleges of Cambridge, with teams of six each running an identical 1.7 mile course in relay format.

2014 funds are being raised for the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity. The race starts (at 9.30am) and ends on Queens’ Green. Sir Michael Marshall is the Honorary President of the Race. Historically the Company has fielded a large number of teams in the race and a trophy is awarded to the fastest Marshall Team taking part in the race.

Race registration has now started and it is hoped that once again Marshall will be entering a number of teams. Team registrations close on Wednesday, 17th September at 5.00pm or if registration hits 360 teams. The Company will meet the cost of your registration for the race. Tournament Triumph Cambridge FA invited local companies to enter a 6-a-side inter-firm football tournament. A team from Marshall ADG (Laurie Carroll, Dave Rich, Steven Tweddell, Rik Thompson, Paul Shaw and Martin Shipley) entered the tournament which took place in April. The Marshall team moved through the group phase with a record of two wins and two draws, thanks to a goal from Rik and three from Paul. The semi-final that followed was a tough challenge and after conceding in the early stages of the game, it looked like that would be as far as the team was going to go. Fortunately, Paul scored again in the final minute to take the game to penalties. Dave saved the final penalty and Marshall marched on to the finals! The final game saw S-Tech, another unbeaten team on the night, start confidently. However, this was as close as they were going to get to the trophy as Marshall turned on the style and beat them comfortably 4-0, with Martin, Paul and Steve all getting on the score sheet. Extended opening hours at Cambridge Aero Club Finnish born Lauri Bora, who works as an Engineer with ARM in Cambridge, was the first Cambridge Aero Club customer to take advantage of the Club’s extended opening hours, which enable members to take a flying lesson on their way to work in the morning! Lauri arrived for his lesson in a Cessna 172 just after 7.00am. After a brief check-out flight with Chief Flying Instructor Anthony Cooke, Lauri spent the next 40 minutes flying solo over Cambridge. Cambridge Aero Club, Managing Director, Terry Holloway, said: ‘There is a huge demand from local people in Cambridge wanting to learn to fly, but for many finding time to do it has been a challenge, because in the past the Cambridge Aero Club’s opening hours have been very closely aligned to people’s working hours. As a result of a real public demand to be able to have a flying lesson, either on the way to work, or on the way home from work, the Cambridge Aero Club is now offering flying instruction from 7.00am until 9.00pm.’

A great day’s fishing The MSSC Angling Club outing with John Bailey was a huge success with the six members not only being lucky with the weather, but also catching plenty of fish! The day was based at the private Kingfisher Lakes, Norfolk and was hosted and guided by John Bailey. John is a TV Angling presenter from shows such as ‘Mr Crabtree goes fishing’, author of many books and journalist for Anglers Mail and the Eastern Daily Press. The early morning gathering started with a short talk by John highlighting the history of the lake from when it was a Trout fishery in the 1980’s to the present day Carp syndicate. Well known Anglers such as John Wilson fished the lake as part of a winter Pike syndicate when it was a Trout lake. In 1985 and 1989 two Pike weighing 39lbs were caught which in those days was not too short of the British record. With this history in mind and the fact it is little fished for Pike these days the Anglers settled down and all soon started to catch Pike between 5 and 7lbs on lures and deadbaits. Mike Webster caught a decent sized Pike weighing 13lb 14oz. The day ended at dusk with Andy Doughty catching the last and biggest fish of the day at 17lb 4oz, a cracker to finish on. Overall the trip was truly memorable with lots of laughs and a great, knowledgeable host.

Support for the EAAA Having been involved in a horrific motorcycle accident on his way to referee a rugby match 4 years ago, Alex Woolley, an aircraft engineer at Marshall ADG, has become a staunch supporter and volunteer for the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA), after the vital assistance the crew gave him at the scene of his accident. Recovering from his many injuries Alex started to think of ways in which he could help the EAAA; together with four friends he entered the Cambridge Spartan Race last year (pictured top right), raising £1,000 for the charity, but Alex wanted to do more. Alex brought his love of rugby together with the EAAA by organising a charity fundraising match in May. The event raised £2,500 with teams from accross East Anglia participating.

Dave McCubbine (pictured middle right) signed up to cycle from Cambridge Airport to Paris and back again – a round trip of 600 miles, to raise money for the charity. Richard was badly injured in a car accident when the EAAA came to his assistance; employees at Marshall often see the Air Ambulance being deployed on lifesaving missions as the helicopter is based at the company’s Airport in Cambridge. Cycling 80 miles a day, Dave and Dave endured extreme weather conditions on their ride, ranging from torrential downpours to temperatures of 33C! But this was all in a very worthy cause and the two cyclists raised over £4,200 for the charity.

Through his volunteer work Alex will be giving talks to local schools and organisations about the work carried out by the EAAA and his own experiences.

Last year Wayne Grover, Ronnie Whitelaw and Kelvin Ingham (pictured right) walked the West Highland Way, some 96 miles from Glasgow to Fort William to raise money for the EAAA. Their challenge raised more than £1,000.

Future Champions The Sir Arthur Marshall Future Champions Programme is designed to help fund talented and gifted able-bodied and disabled young athletes competing at county or regional level, living in Cambridge City, through the opportunity of a grant to aid in their coaching and training. The Programme, open to all athletes aged 11-25, offers support with costs to help the athletes achieve excellence within their chosen sport. The Future Champions judging panel meets twice a year to consider applications, awarding between £100 - £500 to the successful athletes. To date 30 young athletes competing in a range of sports, including swimming, triathlon, athletics, and kayaking, have received grants since the programme began. O Goshi! Commercial Pilot and Flying Instructor with the Cambridge Aero Club, Mike Skakles, recently became the British Army, Under 66 kilogram Judo Champion. Mike who has just returned to competitive Judo after a knee operation added the prestigious Army title to his RAF titles gained whilst a member of the University Air Squadron. If this accolade was not enough, a fortnight later, Mike was in action again at the Inter-Services Championships at the Defence College in Shrivenham, where the Army won the team event, with Mike picking up points towards his third gold and his Army Colours, to add to his School Colours and RAF Colours.

Cambridge Flying Group awards first Flying Bursary It has been said many times that ‘if you can fly a Tiger Moth – you can fly anything!’. The yellow and silver Tiger Moth biplanes of the Cambridge Flying Group (CFG) are a regular sight in the skies over Cambridge. As part of the celebrations of the 60th Anniversary of the CFG in 2013, the members of the Group have, together with external supporters, contributed to a bursary to enable a young person to gain a flying licence learning in the world-famous De Havilland Tiger Moth. The CFG invited young people, up to the age of 30, living within 30 miles of Cambridge, to apply for the bursary. No previous flying experience was required although evidence of a keen interest in aviation was a necessity. The Bursary value is approximately £5,000 and is match-funded by the successful grant winner. Three applicants were short-listed and the first award of the CFG Bursary was made to Monarch Air Lines Engineering Apprentice, Ross Pardy. The runners up were so impressive that smaller awards were made to Alice Hildrop and Richard Smith.


U’s Partner with Abbey Ward An exciting new partnership has emerged that will benefit some young people in the Abbey Ward area of Cambridge, an area which is just along the road from the Marshall site. “Abbey People” have linked with Romsey Mill, with Jon Sanders being employed as a youth development worker in the Abbey Ward, working with young people who are in need of some extra support. Now Marshall of Cambridge and Cambridge United Youth & Community Trust (CUYCT) have joined the partnership. Marshall has committed to provide funding for the next 3 years to CUYCT to enable them to open their Youth & Community Room to this new group, and support the young people that will be invited to attend with visits from players, along with some potentially exciting opportunities for access to further training. One of the groups to benefit from the generosity of the CUYCT was a group of homeless people from Cambridge – the Trust organised a coach to take the group to watch the recent Conference Promotional final at Wembley Stadium where Cambridge United triumphed over Gosport-Borough by 4-0 to win the FA Carlsberg Trophy. Aerobility takes to the skies People with disabilities in Cambridge were invited to Cambridge Airport for the opportunity to learn to fly. The charity which organised the day, Aerobility, aims to break down the barriers that prevent disabled people from flying, putting various accessibility aids in place so that the aircraft become physically accessible to all. The Charity hopes to introduce aviation to as many disabled people as possible in the local community. Pilot Mark Murray, an Aerobility member and wheelchair user with a spinal injury, attained his licence last summer and has achieved some 75 hours flying time. This was the organisations first trip to Cambridge, and Mike MillerSmith, Chief Executive of Aerobility, was pleased with how well the day went and hopes to return to Cambridge Airport very soon. Farewell to Chris Mills Chris Mills has retired after nearly 40 years with the Company. Chris joined Marshall as an Avionics Technician and has worked on most types of aircraft that we have seen at Cambridge since then. As Air Traffic Control (ATC) became more complex, he progressively moved across to ATC Engineering until it became a completely separate section. More recently Chris has been repairing Avionics units for the TriStar fleet and any other unserviceable units that we have been able to bring back in from Navigation Aids out on the airfield. Chris’ departure will leave a big hole in his section and his skill and experience will be greatly missed by everyone within ATC Engineering. His retirement will allow Chris to become more involved with his daughter’s riding school business and help her pursue her career in competitive Eventing.

But despite the soaking they received, all the riders enjoyed a fantastic day, as Tom Gargett, Head of Commercial Export in Cambridge, explains: "The event on the day was monumental; with the course, the weather conditions, the spectators and the marvellous organisation all contributing to making it a very memorable adventure. The cancelling of Leith and Box Hills was at the time a disappointment but on reflection a blessing in disguise, as the Surrey Hills were awash and the descents would have been extremely dangerous. So I will just have to ready myself to go again next year to complete the full 100 miles and beat my time of five hours and 40 minutes. Preparations starting now!" The event may be over for this year, but the fundraising efforts continue, as Bliss are still working to provide the best possible care and support for premature and sick babies and their families.
