Ricoh updates Rowing the Tasman in record time They did it! Team Gallagher, made up of Nigel Cherrie, Martin Berka, Andrew McCowan and James Blake, rowed across the Tasman in 55 days. They set off from Sydney on 27th November and arrived in Auckland on 21st January – making them the fastest unsupported rowing team to cross the Tasman from Australia to New Zealand. Team Director and Atlantic rower Rob Hamill met them as they came into the harbour. He says: “It was quite a sight to see them row in. Being out at sea for this long and covering this kind of distance – 3,321 kilometres! – is a great mental and physical effort, a real achievement, and I’m extremely proud of the team.” The rowing challenge is part of a bigger mission to raise funds to create the world’s largest artificial reef in Indonesia. “Our plan as a team is to fly out to Sabah, north of Borneo, soon, to start working on the reef,” says Rob. “The destruction of coral reefs in Indonesia has a direct impact on us in New Zealand, so it’s important to react and do something about this.” Michael Pollok, Managing Director of Ricoh New Zealand, couldn’t agree more: “Team Gallagher have set out to raise awareness of the importance of the marine ecosystem and we’re proud to supporting such a worthwhile cause.” Visit www.teamgallagher.co.nz/saving-our-marine-environment/ to find out more about the coral garden project.

Winning the Motatapu with Ricoh Ricoh sponsored mountain biker Kate Fluker has been racing for less than two years and has already logged a staggering number of successes – including winning the 2012 Motatapu Women’s Elite race with a new race record time. She is the Otago Elite Women’s Mountain Bike Champion and, in her first year, came 5th in the Cross Country Mountain Bike National Series. Ricoh Dunedin branch manager Russell McGarry says: “We’re proud to be backing Kate. She’s an amazing rider and a very refreshing, humble person – a truly inspirational mountain biker. She is currently planning her winter campaign and may compete overseas as well.”

New seal for Taupo Motorsport Park Ricoh New Zealand is now sponsoring Taupo Motorsport Park. A naming rights sponsorship deal will provide the funds needed for required re-sealing work. This will see patches on the track, especially the corners, fixed for good – restoring the track to premium condition with the project expected to be complete by the end of June. Track manager Geoff Langham says the various repairs tried to date have never permanently fixed the surface, which has caused both imagined and some real concern for competitors and organisers alike. Now, Fulton Hogan will be contracted to mill out all existing damaged and patched areas and re-seal them with a special formulation.

Ricoh drives imagination and change

Meet the Imagination Balloon

Imagine. Change. These two small words have a big story to tell – Ricoh’s story, and how we help companies and individuals transform the way they work and harness their collective imagination.

“Imagine is about passion, about dreams. At Ricoh, we believe in ideas, and that imagination is the greatest asset we have.” We are always moving forward with new thinking and new ways of improving lives. Change is driven by imaginative thinking. That is the proposition of the Ricoh brand. Imagine. Change. It’s the essence of who we are as people, as a company, and as a global community. ‘Imagine’ is about passion, about dreams. At Ricoh, we believe in ideas, and that imagination is the greatest asset we have. We’ve always been the company of ideas. Ricoh’s founder Kiyoshi Ichimura sought out people who refused to be bound by conventions. They imagined a world of knowledge available, anywhere, anytime. A global community, living and working together. The company grew quickly. Over time, succeeding generations built principles to support and guide it. These principles became known as The RICOH Way—the rich philosophy that continues to form the soul of our business. Today, imagination is the special quality that energises Ricoh. ‘Change’ is about resolve, about the quest to succeed. Real change can reinvent the way people work together. It may involve products and solutions that streamline business processes, make the world smaller and more connected, answer the needs of specific industries, monitor progress towards true sustainability, or return value to the local community. We know that when we put our imagination to task, we can generate new products and services that change the way people live and work. After all, we’ve done it before. We were at the forefront of office automation, ushering in a new era of productivity and helping to bring about the instantaneous global exchange in information we all now take for granted. We pioneered digital imaging in the office. Through integrated solutions, we speeded the creation and management of routine business documents. These, and other breakthrough technologies and innovations, have shown that we’re more than just a company with ideas. We’re the company that puts those ideas to work. And that’s why we’re taking a fresh look at Ricoh to see where we can change ourselves. We’re laying out the roadmap for the way we will expand, for decades to come. And, to support all these actions, we’re introducing a single, bold proposition: Imagine. Change.

Amping it up on two wheels

“A huge thanks to Ricoh and my other sponsors – it means a lot to me as a full time athlete to have this support.”

Ricoh sponsored road cyclist Joe Cooper is gaining traction not just in New Zealand, but also overseas. He has now made it into the Pure Black Racing team and has just finished his first international race with them. The Tour of Langkawi in Malaysia was Pure Black Racing’s first race based in Asia for the season and also the first time Joe was racing as part of the team. “It was a pretty tough tour, but we were pleased with how we ended up,” says Joe. “We were 6th on team classification ahead of some big name pro teams and 10th on general classification.

“The Tour of Langkawi in Malaysia was Pure Black Racing’s first race based in Asia for the season.”

“We arrived in Malaysia a week before the race began which turned out to be a good idea as it gave us a few days to get used to the heat. The first stage of the tour was an individual time trial on road bikes with clip on aero bars. I was really happy to finish up 6th, which was a huge result for me only 1.31 off the winner. This meant I was now also placed 6th on the overall classification. “We couldn’t have asked for a better start in the opening stage one 20km TT. There’s one major climbing stage, the day to Genting Highlands, which I was super amped up for. At 10 stages long and with some big teams, it’s a different level of competitive racing, but one I’m really enjoying.” Competitive racing generally is going well for Joe. After winning the elite men’s race at the Tour de Ranges in January, he went on to compete in the 2012 Manawatu New Zealand Cycle Classic. He finished 12th in the general classification 1.52 off the winner, took out the King of the Mountain jersey and was 4th in the sprint category with the team also managing an impressive 5th place on the team classification – a pretty successful tour overall for Team Ricoh. Last November, Joe came third in the Round Taupo Race. He comments: “I was really happy with that result, coming off a big block of volume work. A huge thanks to Ricoh and my other sponsors – it means a lot to me as a full time athlete to have this support.” Joe now has some solid training ahead of him for his next races. Coastguard – the charity that saves lives at sea

As a nation surrounded by oceans, Kiwis love to spend leisure time in and on the water. No-one ever heads out expecting to be rescued, but… there are 6,996 New Zealanders are here today because of Coastguard and its brave volunteers. And that’s just the lives saved in the year from July 2010 to June 2011. “It’s an incredible effort, saving so many lives and putting themselves into dangerous conditions to do it,” says Paul Daniel from Ricoh New Zealand. “We’re proud to support the Coastguard and the great work they do. A big thank you to the outgoing CEO Bruce Reid for all his support, and a warm welcome to the new CEO.”

Coastguard is a charity and it saves the lives of ordinary Kiwis who get in trouble in our waters. As with most organisations in the charity sector, funding is a challenge and it’s for this reason that Coastguard launched its national fundraising appeal in 2011 – the MayDay Appeal. The funds raised are used to ‘train one – save many’.

DID YOU KNOW

?

• 71 Coastguard units are spread throughout New Zealand covering coastal areas and the major lakes.

• 2,218 active Coastguard volunteers are involved in search and rescue. • 3,337 rescue missions took place between July 2010 and June 2011. • 6,996 people returned to their loved ones in the year July 2010 to June 2011. • 350,000+ hours are dedicated by volunteers to training, searching, fundraising each and every year. • $11 million are needed each year to cover operating costs.

Training is a vital part of being a Coastguard volunteer. Many hours are spent practising the various tasks to be performed (anywhere from 44 hours to 271 hours for the different roles). Once trained, each and every one of the operational crew (the guys and gals on the rescue vessels) needs to spend approximately 200 hours on the water each year to keep their skills finely honed and up to date. Another challenge faced by Coastguard is that their rescues often happen after dark and in conditions that most other people would rather be tucked up in bed, safe and sound. But this can’t faze the Coastguard volunteers. They need to be prepared for these conditions. They need to be trained to be the best they can be, so that when the pager goes off at 3.00am they know exactly what to do and how to do it, and spring into action. Saving lives at sea begins on land with education, and you can help by making a donation to the Coastguard’s MayDay Appeal. Visit www. coastguard.co.nz or call 0900 SOS SOS (0900 767 767). 7

Ricoh’s Big Green Day Out 2012

Planting more than 2,500 native shrubs on Motuihe Island this autumn, was the result of this year’s Big Green Day Out. Volunteers enjoyed some hands-on environmental work, the beauty of the island and the satisfaction that they are helping to create an amazing sanctuary for native flora and fauna From flax, taupata and karamu through to puriri, haupara and manuka, ‘Ricoh Valley’ on Motuihe Island in Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour is already showing off a wide range of native plants. Since the start of the initiative in 2004, staff, family and customers have planted more than 17,000 trees on the island.

“Staff, family and customers have planted more than 17,000 trees.”

“It’s a great way to make a difference,” says Margie Barriball, Sustainability Advisor at Ricoh. “Every time we return to the island it’s exciting to see the growth of the trees we’ve planted. The area has undergone an amazing transformation from farmland to lush emerging forest. For Ricoh to be a part of this is very satisfying.” Ricoh Managing Director Mike Pollok agrees: “We get a real sense of achievement to see the saplings we have planted thriving and know that in the years to come, the island will return to being an authentic natural haven for endangered birds and native insects. “Our tree planting day fits with Ricoh’s commitment to social responsibility, including a strong environmental focus. I’m sure the promise of our famous catered BBQ at lunchtime helps motivate people as well.” Ricoh’s volunteering day is part of the wider Motuihe Island Restoration Project. Authorities have eradicated the island’s pests and the extensive tree planting programme will provide a perfect habitat for rare native birds which have been released on the island, among them little spotted kiwi, saddlebacks and kakariki. About 60 tuataras now also call Motuihe home.

Ricoh client wins national award for help in Christchurch Following the February 2011 earthquakes, an Ashburton couple made it their mission to bring much needed supplies to the people of Christchurch. TrustPower thinks their effort deserves national recognition. We think so, too. Every day after the earthquakes, Trevor Hurley and his wife Jane – along with a team of other volunteers – travelled to Christchurch with a mobile barbecue, water, donated food and groceries. What quickly became known as ‘Trev’s BBQ’ was a relief and a beacon of hope for many Kiwis in need.

Trevor and Jane Hurley

The Hurleys went to the hardest hit suburbs to feed people who had no way of accessing food. The first night they fed around 400 people and in the words of Trevor: “We knew we had to go back and help more.” And that is what they did, 46 times! After that first BBQ, Trevor spoke on the local radio asking for donations of food, groceries and water. The response was immediate and over one hundred people volunteered to help. More than $25,000 were donated just in cash and much more in groceries and products. Well over 4,000 volunteer hours were put into this effort.

Many volunteers helped

“Trevor is a longstanding Ricoh client and I was amazed by his initiative and all the hard work he and his wife put in – it shows a true community spirit. It’s fantastic to see their work honoured in this way.” “We contacted local businesses, and without hesitation, they gave us sausages, bread, sauce, coffee, tea and biscuits,” says Trevor. “On an average day we gave away hundreds of litres of fresh water, $2000 worth of groceries and around $2000 of vegetable and fruit, hundreds of blankets and other house hold goods. People would often give us a hug or just cry when we gave them what we had. Many offered to pay, not realising it was all free.”

Donated clothing

Honouring their service to the people, Trevor and Jane were named the joint winners of this year’s TrustPower National Community Awards. They were up against 24 other supreme winners from throughout the country and share their win with the Denniston Heritage Trust. “We were absolutely thrilled,” says Jane. “It’s a testament to all those who helped. It wasn’t just us, it was the whole community, and we just enabled it all to go to the people who needed it.” Perhaps the most important outcome for Trev’s BBQ was that it gave an opportunity for people to stop and have a chat about the devastation in their lives.

Much needed groceries

Daryl Young at the Heartland Ricoh office in Ashburton says: “Trevor is a longstanding Ricoh client and I was amazed by his initiative and all the hard work he and wife put in – it shows a true community spirit. It’s fantastic to see their work honoured in this way.”

A colourful approach to recycling

The waste toner from Ricoh’s recycled toner cartridges is now being used in specialised paint – so when you pick up your paint brush next to give your house or fence a new coat of paint, you may be recycling as you go! In what is believed to be a world-first, Ricoh’s recycling partner, the Toner Recycling Centre (TRC), has teamed up with Enviropaints to create paint using waste toner extracted from used photocopier and printer cartridges. Waste toner is a mix of four colours, and TRC has developed a new method to separate black, cyan, magenta and yellow toner. It can then be prepared and sent to Enviropaints for further processing. The first re-created specialised paint incorporating the toner was produced at Enviropaints’ Otaki plant following a six-month trial. The unique paint can be used for a wide range of applications, including buildings, fencing and covering over graffiti.

“Ricoh sends more than 60,000 toner cartridges to TRC for recycling every year, diverting more than 14,000 kilograms of waste from landfill.”

Processing waste residue toner in this way means that every part of our waste toner cartridges are now being reused. All the other components, such as plastic casing, steel and aluminium, already get recycled. Ricoh’s sustainability advisor Margie Barriball says it’s reassuring to know that, as the rate of toner cartridges collected from customers increases, Ricoh can rely on TRC to deal with them in the most environmentally responsible way. “It’s great to have a supplier like TRC who is as committed to lessening their impact on the environment as we are, and committed to finding innovative solutions to waste problems such as this,” she says. “We can now recycle our cartridges 100 per cent and are able to track exactly where the materials end up and into what products they are made.” Ricoh sends more than 60,000 toner cartridges to TRC for recycling every year, diverting more than 14,000 kilograms of waste from landfill. This equates to about 60 per cent of all toner cartridges used by customers. We spend around $125,000 a year on toner cartridge recycling, and encourage our customers to embrace recycling systems. As a result, there has been a significant increase in toner cartridge recycling in recent years. Ricoh Communicator - No. 23

Bringing an enterprise level of service to kiwi business

Do you think that world-leading business analysis, consultancy and IT services are unaffordable for small and medium sized businesses? Think again. Ricoh Consulting now has a new division that brings you all of these services at fixed prices.

“What makes our offer different is that our highly qualified team provides holistic ICT solutions ranging from service delivery, procurement and governance through to business process design, finance and insurance.”

Fixing the cost of service provision is a New Zealand first. There is no fixed term and as a business you can adjust your needed coverage every month depending on how many devices (‘seats’) you have. It’s an extremely flexible approach that allows you to easily shrink or grow you service plan, and ultimately to manage your budget and control your costs. Businesses can opt for managed services (Ignite) and select extra managed features such as managed mobility device and managed infrastructure – all on a ‘pay by seat’ basis. With the global buying power of Ricoh behind them, even small businesses can afford the very best integrated solutions. “What makes our offer different is that our highly qualified team provides holistic ICT solutions ranging from service delivery, procurement and governance through to business process design, finance and insurance,” says John King, IT Services Manager at Ricoh Consulting. “And we do it all in a way that is accessible to small and medium sized organisation.” A key feature of all of these services is visibility. John explains: “When you get a managed service with Ricoh, you get reporting that actually means something to you, every month. It’s colour coded and easy to work with. Each test or event has an explanation with it, so you know exactly what is going on.” While small and medium businesses are the main focus for the new division, Ricoh Consulting also works with many large organisations such as Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc. featured in the case study on the opposite page. To find out more about Ricoh Consulting and how they can manage your services, email [email protected] or call 0800 RICOH IT (742 644)

Case studies for IT Services Ricoh’s ‘Ignite’ keeps NZ youth charity up and running

Mining company uncovers savings with Ricoh managed IT service

Young New Zealanders Foundation is a national charity that helps children deal with bullying, abuse and suicide prevention. Its programmes are available through schools and aimed primarily at 10-12 year olds.

Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc. is a gold mining company with offices in Canada and New Zealand, mining plants in Vietnam and exploration sites in Malaysia and the Philippines.

Requirements Colin May, Operations Manager at Young New Zealanders Foundation, says: “We do not have an IT manager, so we needed someone who really understands the technical side of things and can manage our IT requirements. We needed to cover our head office as well as several remote users across the country.”

Requirements “Olympus Pacific has hundreds of PC end users – operating in several countries, often out in the field,” says Peter Tiedemann, CIO at Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc. “With new site explorations, our staff numbers increase dramatically. At the moment, we employ 1,800 people, but we expect this to go up to 2,500-3,000 in the next two to three years.”

Solution “Ricoh Consulting offered an affordable solution with their Ignite service. They usually access our system remotely to fix problems, or if necessary will come to our office. Ricoh has put together a very strong team across this service. They are pragmatic and solutions-focused. They’ve helped us deal with a range of IT issues and with future-proofing our IT infrastructure,” explains Colin.

Solution “We decided to centralise our IT operations in New Zealand with the help of Ricoh,” Peter explains. “Ricoh coordinates our IT requirements with key system suppliers such as Kaseya and Microsoft. They are a very dynamic and hands on team.”

Benefits “Our primary driver is having a quick response to IT issues. Every hour of downtime costs us around $1,000 in missed charity calling, and with Ignite we can minimise downtime as much as possible,” says Colin. “Another key benefit for us is that Ricoh offers a predictable and scalable IT cost structure. Per seat charging means that we only pay for what we really need and don’t have large up front costs.”

Benefits “By having fewer in-house ICT administration staff – instead of seven part-time staff we now only need two – we have more consistency across our operation. Our systems are now standardised, more reliable and more securely backed up. We get advanced warning reports before things go wrong, and we can upscale quickly thanks to Ricoh. We can now also easily share expensive software licences between users, and we’re expecting significant savings because of this.”

Small meeting rooms and other confined spaces are no longer an obstacle – you can now project anything anywhere with our new ultra short-throw projectors. All you need is a space of 11.7 cm – that’s the projection distance that’s required, measured from the rear of our units. It’s not about size, it’s about how much the distance to the projected surface can be reduced – and we’re happy to report that the Ricoh projectors are the top performers in this respect. Vertical projection makes it possible. We use an original free-from mirror to project the images and this allows us to utilise even the smallest of spaces – an industry first. Our projectors are also the lightest in the world at about 3.0 kg making them easy to carry around. You can set up for presentations and meetings in any room, or project electronic posters on wall surfaces to turn them into information communication spaces. You can also use the new Ricoh projectors for displays in show windows and shops. No installation costs are required since all you need to do to project images and announcements is to set it in place. The projectors start up just three seconds after turning the power on and shut down when the power cable is unplugged. They’re available as standard models (WX4130) and as multi-function models equipped with network capabilities (WX4130N), and automatically compensate for vertical keystone distortion and wall colour.

Helping Kiwi kids reach their full potential

In New Zealand over 270,000 children live in poverty. It’s a real issue, not just overseas but in our own backyard. That’s why Ricoh endorses KidsCan, a charity that combats child poverty and its impact on the health and education of disadvantaged New Zealand children. Julie Helson established the KidsCan Charitable Trust, providing food, shoes, raincoats and other basic items to pupils from lower decile schools across NZ. She says: “While we can pontificate about the causes of poverty, and who is to blame, the fact is there are families forced to live on inadequate incomes in our own backyard. It is in the best interests of our community to help them.

“In New Zealand over 270,000 children live in poverty. It’s a real issue, not just overseas but in our own backyard.”

“In the six years since launching KidsCan I have seen little sign of parents deliberately neglecting their children’s needs. Almost invariably they are proud people who are embarrassed when incomes will not stretch far enough, and go without themselves to provide for their kids.” KidsCan supports the education of over 43,000 children in 211 low-decile schools with over 100 schools on the waiting list. By helping to meet the physical and nutritional needs of these children, KidsCan aims to enable them to reach their full potential in life. Partner schools report they are now more able to monitor which children are consistently hungry and work with families to help them access community services such as budgeting. Indeed, some schools no longer require the food programmes. KidsCan help has enabled them to address the effects of poverty head-on and reduce or eliminate the need for assistance rather than creating dependence. By joining the KidsCan ‘In Our Own Backyard Club’ you can sponsor the basic items for a disadvantaged child from $15 a month, which is less than 50 cents a day. You can choose which New Zealand region you would like to support, and 100% of your donation will go directly to the KidsCan programmes in your region. Become a sponsor now at www.kidscan.org.nz.

Case study: Museum benefits from multifunctional devices and print control solutions

Find out how this organisation maximised its business efficiency while at the same time reducing administration and overall printing costs. Background Te Papa is New Zealand’s innovative national museum and a recognised world leader in interactive experiences.

“It’s less about the total cost of ownership and more about the total value of the solution,” says Neil.

Challenges The museum wanted to make the most of the latest office equipment technology in order to maximise efficiency, including providing a consistent user experience across the business, whilst minimising administration and overall printing costs. Solution Neil Cowley, Manager – Information Technology, and his team consulted Ricoh to scope out the potential benefits available from new technology. Based on this, Te Papa chose Ricoh’s multi-functional devices (MFDs*), together with a print and copy control solution, which includes Follow-You and Secure Printing. Benefits Reduced printing volumes: Immediately, Te Papa saw the benefits of FollowYou printing. It has produced a 25% reduction in printing, as documents only physically print out when they are ‘released’ at the MFD’s touch screen by the staff member. Print jobs that aren’t ‘released’ are automatically deleted after eight hours. Neil says: “Everyone has commented on the lack of paper lying around the MFDs.” Information security: ‘Secure Printing’ ensures that confidential print jobs are only picked up by the correct person, as the person producing the document has to ‘release’ it at the MFD in order for it to print.

Accountability: The print and copy control solution has enabled monthly reports to be easily created and sent to managers. These summarise the print and copy volumes (by black and colour) that their departments and individual staff members have generated. It makes it easy to charge-back departments for their printing. Reduced IT administration: Staff simply swipe their standard building access cards at the MFDs, in order to use them. As there is no need for special cards, this has reduced administration costs. Also, the Ricoh MFDs are active directory enabled, for scanning directly to email. This means that the IT department doesn’t have to load email addresses onto the devices.

Project snapshot Client: Te Papa Tongarewa Based: Wellington Sector: Government Objective: To improve staff efficiency and reduce operational costs. Solution: Ricoh’s multifunctional devices combined with print and copy control software. Benefits: • Reduced printing volumes • Information security • Accountability • Reduced IT administration • Ease of use for staff • Flexibility • Full colour

Ease of use for staff: Ricoh MFDs have provided Te Papa with a consistent user experience across their business – from the MFDs’ intuitive touch screens through to the same Ricoh support and servicing throughout the museum. Flexibility: Follow-You printing enables the user to release their print jobs from any Ricoh MFD. So, printouts can be collected when and where needed, even from an MFD in Te Papa’s second building. This is also useful if staff have an urgent print job, but their first choice of printer is being used by someone else for a big print run.

“Ricoh has provided expertise, which has paid dividends. Going beyond the role of a traditional supplier, Ricoh has been a proud sponsor of Te Papa since 2000.” Full colour: The Ricoh MFDs can print and copy in full colour, as well as black. “Don’t be scared of colour, because its usage can be transparently seen via the print and copy reporting and can be disabled if necessary, per individual user,” says Neil. Why Ricoh? As Neil says: “Ricoh has provided expertise, which has paid dividends”. Going beyond the role of a traditional supplier, Ricoh has been a proud sponsor of Te Papa since 2000. The relationship with the museum brings them the latest technology that helps streamline Te Papa’s business processes.
