Town of Hartney / RM of Cameron Community Christmas Party The Community Christmas Party that was held on Sunday, December 8th, 2103 was a huge success with approximately 100 people in attendance for the delicious turkey dinner and over 30 kids received a personalized gift from Santa. The majority of the kids, along with their families, were able to enjoy the afternoon movie The Polar Express with juice, popcorn and balloons. The craft time that followed was enjoyed by many – the ‘tree decorating’ contest had a total of 21 participants with the top 5 selected for small prizes. It was great to see so many members of the community out for this event, even with the extremely cold weather. This event would have been nothing without the contributions from community members, organizations and businesses. The theme of this Christmas event was community, and the community really showed it as 100% of the event ran on donations, with the exception of the catered dinner that was covered by the cost of the tickets. Thank you to the following for their contributions as this party would not have occurred without their assistance and support: Hall Rental – Town of Hartney Catering – Betty Morrison, Diane Agnew, and Joanne Eastman Musical Entertainment – Carol Thomas, Matt Tribble, and Audrey Keeler Volunteering (set up / clean up) – Verla Mills, Blaine Belbeck, Heather Carroll, Audrey Keeler, and Lori Taylor Volunteering (craft time and watching the door) – Heather Carroll and Audrey Keeler Reading of the ‘Night Before Christmas’ - Valerie Troop Crafts – Tiny Tot Junction, Inc. “Tree” Decorating Contest judges – Lori Taylor and Barbara A Lee Door Prizes – Wayne & Donna Drummond, Hartney Machine & Motors, and Aaron & Emmy Sanderson Silent Auction Prizes – Sunrise Credit Union, Hart-Cam Fitness Centre, Hartney Mazergroup, and Aaron & Emmy Sanderson Styrofoam Cups & Plates – Sunrise Credit Union Placement and Decorating of Exterior Tree – Greg Morrison, Matt Hay, Michael McGonigal, Darcy Henderson, and Tim Inkster Exterior Lights for the Tree – The Former Chamber of Commerce for the lights. The New Year is here and it is a cold one as we brought in the New Year with temperatures in the -50s. If you are wanting to get out, but stay warm, please keep in mind that there is a $3.00 Pool Night from 7 to 9pm on Tuesday nights at the Hart-Cam Community Centre (on East Railway Street); and Scrapbooking Club from 6 to 8pm on Thursday nights. The Monday night Yoga classes, from 6 to 7 pm, have also continued through this facility. They will be running until January 20th and taking a break until February 17th, when the instructor (Doreen Delgaty from Killarney) returns from holidays. Please note that the Hart-Cam Community Centre is open Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It can also be booked for your own events through the Recreation / CDC office. In addition, the Indoor Recreational Soccer program for 2-3 and 4-6 year olds finished its last 3 weeks this month. There is still consideration to run a second program, but we are currently looking for a second adult to partner up with the current coach to assist with the program. As well, the Westman Recreation Practitioners Association is going to be sitting down with the Manitoba Soccer Association in the near future to discuss the potential Westman Youth Soccer League. If it is a go, we hope to run a camp prior to the start-up of the league. On a further note, the Recreational Drop-In Soccer program for ages 13 and up has been discontinued at this time due to lack of interest in the program. If you are interested in the revitalization of this program or have suggestion of another program, please contact the Recreation Director. Shintani Wado Kai Karate is also scheduled to begin on Wednesday February 5th and will run Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 pm. There is potential for this program to run through to the end of May and continue again in September. The program costs are set on a monthly registration rate of $15 for ages 14 and under, $25 for ages 15 and up, and $40 for a family. For those who are interested in participating in this program for the majority of the year, there is a $42 yearly insurance payment per participant to Shintani Wado Kai Karate; but, there is no obligation to pay this fee up-front due to the understanding that some participants may only be in the program for a monthly trial basis. The location for this activity is set for the multi-purpose room at the Hartney School. If you have an interest in this program, please contact the Recreation Office no later than January 28th. The Recreational Badminton Club has moved to Wednesday nights, from 7 to 9 pm at the Hartney School Gym; and will continue on Wednesday nights until March 12th. Recreational Basketball Club began on Thursday, January 16th, from 7 to 9 pm, at the Hartney School Gym and will also continue through to March 13th. As a reminder, both of these programs are free and available to anyone over the age of 13; but, anyone the age of 13 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult. A 2-day Standard First Aid and CPR / AED Training course is being offered the weekend of February 22nd and 23rd at the Civic Centre Board Room. Registration and payment must be submitted to the Recreation / CDC office by February 1st, 2014. This program will be cancelled if there are not enough participants. As a final note from the recreational side of the Recreation / CDC Office, the pool has begun the hiring process for the 2014 season. Please refer to our ads on how to become a lifeguard, lifeguards and instructors job ad, and the pool administrator job ad. If there are any questions pertaining to these ads, please contact the Recreation / CDC Office at 204-858-2536. From the Emblem CDC side, the discussion of building a reasonably valued duplex, for purchase, has continued as there was an expressed interest in the past from some community members. Unfortunately, at this time the project will not be able to move forward until commitment is demonstrated. If you or someone you know has a potential interest in the new duplex, please contact the CDC office at 204-858-2536. Finally, for your information, Entrepreneurship Manitoba will be holding a 3-day Business Planning Workshop in Dauphin, Manitoba on March 18th to 20th (9:30 am to 4:30 pm). Tiny Tot Junction Inc. SENSORY PLAY Stimulating the senses sends signals to children’s brains that help to strengthen neural pathways important for all types of learning. For example, as children explore sensory materials, they develop their sense of touch, which lays the foundation for learning other skills, such as identifying objects by touch, and using fine-motor muscles. The materials children work with at the sand and water table have many sensory attributes — they may be warm or cool, wet or dry, rough or smooth, hard or soft, textured or slimy. Discovering and differentiating these characteristics is a first step in classification, or sorting — an important part of preschoolers’ science learning and discovery.

8 cups flour & 1 cup baby oil. It feels like flour as you run your fingers through it, but you can also mold it!

The children at our early learning programs including Tiny Tot Junction Inc. and the Preschool Enrichment program have been enjoying playing in the ooey gooey sensory activities our faculty members have been preparing for them to explore. A sensory activity can be very simple to very complex for various ages of children. We can easily change the difficulty of an activity by changing the materials we offer for various age groups. We have made eye-spy bags with gel and manipulative items, and sorting trays with colored buttons. Our sensory table was filled with goo and sea animals The children can pull out several items from the play kitchen to scoop and pour with as they learn and explore. Every so often we pause our play to clean up the flooring and then start playing again. We are having a lot of fun pretending, exploring and learning together using these exciting materials.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

This month our programs will be hosting a KINDERMUSIK program. Kristen Bertram from Brandon will be coming to Hartney to help our children and faculty learn through music, songs and rhythm. We will also be offering YOGA for the children to help them learn fun ways to implement movement. Our monthly visits to the Personal Care Home and to Cameron Lodge have been a huge success thus far, and we intend to continue these visits into 2014. NEWS On December 4th we welcomed Courtney to our team at Tiny Tot Junction. She will be working specifically with the infants and 2 year olds while building that program to help with transitioning and implementing age appropriate activities. Courtney is currently attending the workplace training program with ACC to obtain her ECE II diploma. Working with Courtney has been a pleasure and we are all looking forward to growing and learning with her in the future. Over Christmas we said goodbye to a long time staff member and friend- Verla Mills. Her cooking and smiles will be missed here at Tiny Tot Junction. The children have been assisting the faculty over the past few weeks to help us make the meals just like Verla used to. We wish her the very best in her future endeavors. Best wishes into the New Year from Hartney Early Learning Programs

Eric Atkinson Thomas, passed away suddenly on December 3,2013 due to an enlarged heart. Which isn’t a surprise with the amount of love he had shown. Born April 5, 1951 at Mrs. Forbes Maternity House in Hartney, Manitoba; his home was near his family and his passion was flying. Eric was a dare devil who enjoyed challenging all both roads and sky. Left to remember his teasing, laughter and unconditional love are his mother, Anita Atkinson Thomas, children, Vicky Thomas (Wayne), Wendy Mitchler grandchildren, Marc (Alina), Andrew (Sabrina), Devin, Skyler and Anna, great grandson Shawn, sister Cathy (Gerry), brother David (Peggy), Chris; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a recent great great nephew plus many close family and friends. Funeral was held at Hartney, where family and friends gathered to celebrate his life on Monday December 9, 2013. Interment was held at the Hartney Cemetery, Hartney, Manitoba. Predeceased by his father Ross McNaught Thomas in December of 2011, and sister-in-law Sarah Thomas in July 2010. Eric moved to Lauder in 1961. In this time he was known as “Ross’s shadow” at Frank Fedorwich garage. Eric started school in Melgin, MB and graduated in Hartney in 1960. As a child he was an active participant in 4-H. As a teen he was a bat out of hell and keep his parents, his siblings, friends and of course teachers on their toes. He had a brave and daring sense of adventure, dragging most with him. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Diploma in Agriculture in 1975 and farmed with the family and received his pilot’s licence that same year. The skies were never the same. He married Mary Ireland in 1970. In 1978 they opened Thomas Farms Supplies. At the same time he received his commercial pilot’s licence and started Thomas Aviation. 1984 brought the end of C&R Thomas Farm, Thomas Farm Supplies, and Thomas Aviation. Eric had his 1st Responders Course and drove Ambulance for the Rivers area. In 1991 he donated his kidney to his brother David who still carries this amazing gift with him. Eric later braved the ice roads in Northwest Territories. He worked at the Diamond Mines and spoke of massive diamonds being displayed - the one we only see in movies. His trucking took him across Canada and all across United States. His daughter Wendy and grandson Andy also had the pleasure of travelling with him. In 2005 he bought his own semi. Otherwise known as his future wife. He choose to stay closer to home and to be near family. He was a practical joker who made everyone around him smile. He was considered the family social butterfly. Always encouraging everyone to remain close. He left a big hole for someone to step into. His sparkle of life his love of family will be missed. As well his humor, and his will to triumph over all odds...

Thank you - My sister and I would like to express our thanks to friends and family for the many cards, flowers and phone messages we received following the sudden death of our beloved father, Eric Thomas. It was such comfort to know that he had touched so many lives in this way. Your support helped us cope at this sad time. We appreciate your condolences and supportive love more then we can say. Vicky and Wendy

Elizabeth (Betty) MacGregor (nee Jasper) Born Lillian Agnes Elizabeth Jasper on September 13, 1929 to Norman and Gertrude Jasper of Deleau, Manitoba, Betty was predeceased by her brother Wesley Jasper (Audrey) and is survived by Garfield Jasper (Bert) of Souris, Manitoba. Betty initially became a teacher and married Jack Hill, taking up residence in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. She was an avid and capable golfer, curler, bridge player, piano player and choir leader as well as a dedicated mother to Dean Alexandra) and Greg (John), and a loving grandmother to Sadie Allenet (Clement) of Paris, France. In 1972 the family moved to Victoria, BC and Betty again started to gather around her a large group of loving, and loved, friends. Betty worked in Real Estate for a time and as a hostess at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel and the BC Legislature dining room. In 1982 she married Jamie (James Allistair) MacGregor and they lived happily together in her beloved home until his death in 2008. Eventually her Parkinson’s disease made daily living more and more difficult and she was forced to give up her freedom and her home. She died peacefully at the Victoria Hospice. As she wished, there will be no funeral service but donations to the Victoria Hospice (www.victorahospice.org) would be greatly appreciated. The Souris Relay For Life Committee would like to congratulate Del Pringle of Brandon, who was the winner of the I-Pad Mini. The draw was made Dec 20, 2013 in Souris at Just About Hair. The committee would like to thank all those who supported this fundraiser by purchasing tickets. The Second Annual 12 hour Relay For Life will be held in Victoria Park, Friday, June 13th 2014. Hartney & District Donor’s Choice On December 10, 2013 an information and interest meeting was held at the Civic Centre to see if the community were still wanting to continue with the Hartney & District Donor’s Choice canvass. There were 5 people present, and several had contacted me to say they were interested and willing to help make sure that the canvass would be able to continue. Everyone felt they did not want to have Hartney & District Donor’s Choice loose their status. The new executive will consist of Chairperson - Sarah Currah, Vice - chairperson - Kristi Barrows, Secretary - Kim McBrien, Public Relations - Vicky Lewis, Treasurer Joanne Eastman. Trustees for the committee will be Aaron Sanderson, Evelyn Krysowaty, Deanna Henderson, and Maureen Freeman. The committee can always use more help with canvassers volunteering, so if you would be able to give us a few hours of your time to help out, please let us know. Please call anyone on the executive. The 2014 canvass will run from April 1st April 15th, as set out in the constitution. The donation slip will again be put into the Hart-Cam News, so if this is an easier way for you to donate, please use the clipout and mail it in or drop off to me at the office. Thank you to those who have come forward to serve on the executive and as a trustee as well as those who have offered to canvass. It is all appreciated. Respectfully submitted Joanne Eastman

Mayor’s Report Happy 2014 Hartney!! I hope everyone had a great holiday season and am looking forward to a new and exciting year for Hartney and its residents. We have our new pool office and change house under construction which will be opening this summer. We also have been making good use of our Hart Cam Community Center by offering different programs and “pool” evenings for those that would like to enjoy an evening of playing pool with their friends. Everyone is welcome but those under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Check out the ad in this issue of the Hart Cam for our rates to rent this facility for meetings or events you may be hosting. If you’ve never had an opportunity to visit the Community Center, please feel free to stop by and have a look. If there are any classes or events you would like to see happening, please let us know as there may be others interested as well. We’d like to thank Catherine for all her energy and hard work in organizing this schedule. We are also very optimistic and looking forward to seeing a lot of action at our golf course once the weather gets better. While there is still a lot of work to be done, we hope to start swinging our clubs again sometime in 2014! If you have any time to spare, please contact the golf course committee as many hands make the jobs easier and can be a lot of fun as well. Many residents noticed there were many trees missing from the course when they were preparing the site for the new highway construction. Unfortunately some trees were removed from the golf course property along a fairway in error by the workers. We have been assured by MIT that they will work with us to replace these trees at their cost. Thanks to the guys that have worked so hard restoring our course after the flood. Hang in there and all your efforts will soon bee seen in a great new facility in our community! We had a mishap in town with a water hydrant being hit on the corner of River Ave and East Railway. This has cost the town ratepayers approximately $20,000.00 to repair. Hydrants are not covered under our insurance and the only way of recouping these expenses is through MPI. Mistakes happen and we are not always proud of our errors. If we have a license number of the vehicle that caused the damage we can make a claim and save the taxpayers money. If you have any information or would like to admit the error, please contact myself or the Town office. On December 23, 2013 after much deliberation, the official name of our new amalgamated entity in 2015 will be the Municipality of Grassland. The three current councils have formed a committee to work on reviewing the many aspects of operating our communities and how it will work best going forward. The committee members will then take the discussed topics back to their respective councils for approval. We held our first meeting on January 2, 2014. Respectfully submitted Lori Taylor
