Issue 1

The Next Meeting is 7pm, January 29th at the Al Bahr Temple, 5440 Kearny Mesa Rd. Behind the Hampton Inn

January Program The January program will feature the work and techniques of the master carver Boris Khechoyan. Boris studied in Russia in Gothic, Rococo, Empire and Classicism carving. Twenty two years ago, he immigrated to the United States with just a box of handmade tools and a portfolio. Since then he has taken top awards and the International Woodcarvers Congress and "Best of Show" winner at the Design in Wood Show last year. Boris has carved many church pieces, classic furniture and has been featured on HGTV Home and Garden. For the program Boris will be sharing a slide show of his work, talking about his carvings and carving techniques and will have samples of his carvings. If we have time, he has also offered to some of his specialized tools and give a demonstration of his carving.

See you there,

Del Cover, Program Chairman

January Raffle Please come early and take a good look at the prizes. Ticket sales begin at 6:30pm with another opportunity to buy additional tickets at the meeting break. The more tickets you buy the better the chance of winning that tool you've had your eye on and would look great in your shop. All of the money goes directly to acquiring bigger and better prizes. From the President… This month we launched an updated, completely redesigned SDFWA website, sdfwa.org I am pleased to say that early reviews from members who have visited the site have been quite favorable. As with most projects of this sort, various bugs and glitches will probably surface in the next few weeks. But our team, led by Doug Murphy and Jeff Bratt, is making adjustments and changes almost daily to correct them. Contact information for Doug, Jeff, our officers and all the other committee chairmen can be found on the website under the Membership/Contact Us menu buttons. Mike Switalski is the first Member Highlight this month. Mike recently changed his status from former member to active member when he returned to the San Diego area after being away for several years. His first action on returning was to respond to my request for a volunteer to take over the Magazine/Book sales program from Pat Kowalke. Welcome aboard and thanks, Mike. This position is a special one because, in addition to brain power, it requires significant physical effort magazines and books are really heavy. Pat was highlighted in the September message and is a mighty fine person, but not exactly mighty physically. She deserves our sincere gratitude for carrying a truly heavy load, both figuratively and literally. Our traditional woodworking shop at the Design in Wood Exhibit is an important and valuable SDFWA asset. It provides members a chance to use hand tools they might not otherwise handle, learn from master craftsmen and help to produce unique children's furniture which becomes a timeless treasure at many social service organizations in our community. The large stock of high quality red oak from which these chairs are made comes to us thanks to the generous support of Jack Griede. He has been supplying us with material for the chairs without charge for more than a decade now – originally from Lane, Stanton, Vance Lumber and, more recently, from Strata Forest Products at 165 Denny Way in El Cajon. Jack and both of these fine businesses are SDFWA sponsors and deserve our sincere thanks. I just received an updated report from the membership committee. Here are the latest figures. As of January 7th we have 690 paid up members. If the 338 members from 2013 who have not yet renewed do so, our total membership for 2014 will be 1028 - close to the all time high that was reached in 1999. Of course, we welcome new members and are happy to see an increase. But, more importantly, we hope to see an increase in member participation in activities, attendance at general meetings and benefits of membership. The SDFWA board joins me in pledging to continue our efforts to accomplish this goal in 2014.

Dick Ugoretz, President, SDFWA

From the Editor Hello to all, some of you might recognize me as past editor or by my style of presentation. First off I would like to thank Mike McElhiney for doing a great job as editor. He has decided to move on and has been elected as the Association Secretary. I know he will put the same effort into that job as he did as editor. When Dick Ugoretz asked me to take the job I said yes with the one condition that I would do it for six months. My previous tenure was eleven years and I felt after that long that the newsletter needed a fresh look. So any if any member would like to become editor please contact me for information, I will gladly help you get started and you do not have to wait the six months for me to leave. If you haven’t already done so I encourage you to look at this edition as we have some great things happening at the next meeting. Boris Khechoyan is presenting the program for the upcoming meeting, some of you may remember his draped table from the Design In Wood exhibit last year, three tool sales plus the raffle and Wants and Disposals, a chance to sign up to volunteer for the upcoming Design In Wood exhibit and not to mention, a chance to buy that magazine that is missing from your collection, the merchandise table, the brag table, the wants and disposal table where you can talk about what you are selling and finally a chance to meet other woodworkers and share experiences.

Membership Hello, I am Mike Davis. I have joined Sia on the Membership committee. For the past month I have been processing renewals and new members as I try to contribute something to an organization that has given a lot to me. It’s been keeping me busy, but I would like to be a lot busier….. As you probably know, this time of year is our busiest for renewals. So far we have had about 700 of our current members turn in renewals for 2014 with over 300 that have not done so yet. With all of the value we receive from our membership, I’m sure the rest of you will renew soon! You can either renew by mail, in person at our next meeting, or on our great new website. If you need help, please see me at the next meeting. In 2013 we also had over 125 new members join our association. New members as well as renewals are important to any organization, so tell your friends and associates about the many benefits to being a part of this group 4

Design in Wood The New Year brings us once again to preparations for the 33rd Annual Design in Wood Exhibition. Again this year we hope to improve this exceptional International Competition of Fine Woodworking. We have secured major commitments from our many corporate and local sponsors. Our co-Sponsor, the 22nd Agricultural District, also looks forward to our successful Exhibition. Last year's attendance provided the opportunity for 1.425 million Fairgoers to see our exhibit. This year's theme is "Fab Fair – People and Sounds of the 1960’s" focusing on classic board games, video game history and culture, and the connection between the board games and video games. American Woodworker Magazine will sponsor the "Best of Show" award as the top award. We will be giving out over $20,000 in cash and merchandise awards. The Design in Wood Committee will be meeting the first Saturday of each month, January through May 2014. Now is the time for you to get busy on your entry for the competition which will run 24 days again this year from June 7 to July 6, 2014.
