POST 14 OPTIONS IN THE SCIENCE FACULTY 1.

CORE SCIENCE (Edexcel) – (core option)* i.e. the minimum science content which all

students must achieve. This course offers a balanced Science qualification sufficient to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum. The course content of CORE SCIENCE alone is not sufficient to continue with the study of individual sciences at A-level or for many careers. The course leads to one BTEC qualification which has a GCSE equivalence. This core Science content is different from the content of the Further Science options of either Double (Science + Additional Science) or Separate Science. The vast majority of students are expected to choose Core Science with Further Science. Assessment of Core Science Assessment will be both written examination (Unit 1 = 25% overall marks) during the course and by assignments comprising the remaining 75%. The written examination 90 minutes in duration and there will be a total of ten assignments to complete throughout the entire course, which will be carried out during timetabled lessons. 2. CORE SCIENCE with FURTHER SCIENCE This course is recognised in the English Baccalaureate suite of subjects and offers a balanced Science qualification appropriate for the wide ranging needs of the vast majority of our students. It is a pre-requisite for entry to individual science ‘A’ Levels. Its content includes the Core Science material with Additional Science, in each of the three sciences. It is delivered as discrete Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons, taught by specialists in those fields. 3. SEPARATE SCIENCE (Three GCSE awards in total – no individual core award component) Assessment of Further Science component Assessment will be by a terminal examination at the end of Year 11. For GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science the assessment for each will comprise two written science examinations in which all three subjects will be assessed each of 90 minute duration together with controlled assessment material done during science lessons. For separate Science the examinations will all be terminal and will be held at the end of Year 11, they will be subject specific. There will be three written papers in each subject; each of one hour duration together with a controlled assessment in each subject which will have been completed during class time.
