Q. We loved “Bates Motel.” The last show seemed to leave an opening for a continuing series but we have heard nothing. Will it return? When? A. The series, a prequel to “Psycho” focusing on a young Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), will be back for a second 10-episode season. Look for it in 2014; I have not seen a speciic return date yet. Q. Whatever happened to the series called “Ironside” that was on Wednesday nights? The last time my wife and I saw a episode was last month. Did they cancel it? Why? A. NBC saw possibilities in an updating of the Raymond Burr series, which originally aired from 1967 to 1975. But the grittier new version, starring Blair Underwood as the detective in a wheelchair, did not connect with viewers. It was yanked after a handful of episodes because its ratings were low to begin with and then declining. Q. What can you tell me about the British show “Miranda” which aired after “Downton Abbey” last season? It was a welcome comic relief after some of the dark plots on “Downton”! I am now hooked on “Miranda,” too; it is really funny and I hope it will be back. A. “It doesn’t matter what Miranda attempts in life,

whether it’s dating or simply dealing with her overbearing mother,” says the BBC description of the comedy, which airs on public-TV stations in the U.S. “She always seems to fall lat, quite literally.” Although that may be true of the character Miranda, it’s not the case for Miranda Hart, who plays her and writes the show. Hart (Chummy on “Call the Midwife”) has kept the show going for 18 episodes spread over three seasons dating back to 2009. Yes, you read those numbers right, British TV
seasons — which are usually called “series” — tend to be much shorter than American ones and sometimes have long hiatuses. In fact, a fourth season of “Miranda” may not arrive until 2015 because Hart is also busy with other projects. But if you want to see more of her, “Call the Midwife” will be back on U.S. TV with a holiday special in December and a new season in March 2014. And, for those of you who have read this entire item because the question mentioned
“Downton Abbey,” the fourth season begins on PBS’ “Masterpiece” on Jan. 5, and a ifth season has been ordered. Q. Will the excellent “Foyle’s War” return for another series in 2014? A. Writer Anthony Horowitz, the driving creative force on the series that stars Michael Kitchen, had indicated that the most recent episodes will be his last. And even in those, Foyle’s war was no longer WWII: He had moved on to the Cold War. “Nothing is ever certain — and ‘Foyle’s War’ can always return without me,” Horowitz wrote in Radio Times. Although there have been other writers on the 25 episodes to date, Horowitz had a hand in more than 20 of them. “That’s an awful lot of crimes, clues, bodies, suspects, mysteries and chases,” he said. But he did agree to a renewal, and ilming will begin on three more episodes in January 2014 for air in 2015. Q. At the end of the movie “The Shawshank Redemption,” it says, “In memory of Allen Greene.” Who is Allen Greene? A. Allen Greene was the agent and close friend of Frank Darabont, who directed “Shawshank” and wrote the script based on a Stephen King story. Greene died of complications from AIDS.

Some of Jackson’s biggest hits include “Chattahoochee,” “Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” “Gone Country” and “It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere.” Jackson’s latest album is titled “The Bluegrass Album.” It’s Jackson’s irst record focused purely on bluegrass music, with several original songs and a few standards.
