Kumon First Avenue February 2012 Newsletter BUILDING MINDFUL STUDY HABITS

In nutrition, we have something called “mindless eating”. What is it? Simply put, it’s not focussing on eating when we’re eating. An example is a study that showed people watching 60 minutes of TV ate 28% more food than those watching 30 minutes. Everyone does this one time or another, but my point here is that it’s healthier to eat without distractions.

Dear Kumon Students & Families, Happy New Year to you all! We are delighted to have kick-started this new year with the Grand Opening of our Centre. To the students who have been studying Kumon with us for over a month, I continue to applaud you to persevere. You may be starting to see harder material. You may also be finding that some days are busier than others to fit in Kumon study. Please know that I am with you all the way to help you reach your goals in Kumon. Feel free to ask questions when you need help. To the new students who have just joined us this month, welcome! Thank you to all for taking on the commitment of building life-long skills in math and reading.

We can fall into the trap of “mindless study” if there are things around us that distract our attention from doing our daily Kumon study. Here are a few mindful study tips: 1. Choose a quiet place and time in the home for your daily Kumon study. Earplugs or headphones can help! 2. Don’t eat and study at the same time. It’s best to eat your snack before you do Kumon. 3. If you’re younger, it may be useful to have a parent sit beside you with their pen pointing to the next question while you’re working through the set. THIS MONTH’S READING QUESTION In the book “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss, how many places did Sam-I-am ask his friend to try green eggs and ham? The first Kumon student that can tell me the answer will get a small prize. The answer will be announced in next month’s newsletter. Last month’s math answers: Mom’s cookies contain more sugar. Each cookie contains 6 g of sugar (18÷3=6). Congrats to Julie, Valerie and Vanessa!

REMINDERS Remember to read the instructions and examples on the worksheets. Please do each question in the right order. Do not skip questions. Instead, try each question yourself before moving onto the next question. FEATURED STUDENT This is Mackenzie (pictured to the right) – a curious, bright 5-year old. Mackenzie’s parents enrolled her in Kumon Math as she loves counting and numbers. She started in Level 4A which was her comfortable starting point. In just 10 days she finished her first level and was able to write numbers up to 50 without needing to start from the number 1. She could also recite to 100 with ease. She is now about 5 weeks into her Kumon Math study and about to write her Level 3A Achievement Test. Next week she will start Level 2A in adding numbers up to +10. She is on-track towards getting her “Advanced Student Honour Roll” in another half a month or so. This means she will soon be studying material that is 6 months above other children in her grade level. What is the secret to Mackenzie’s early success in math? From day one, Mackenzie and her family followed the Kumon method and have been working hard at putting it into practice. Mackenzie looks forward to coming to the First Avenue Kumon Centre twice a week and spends up to 20 minutes doing her Kumon Math work every day. The results of her hard work are showing. Good job Mackenzie! UPCOMING EVENTS Feb 18-20 Kumon Instructors’ conference in the U.S. Co-instructor J.P. Lee will be managing the Centre that weekend.
