Labyrinth Walk at Gilbert Park

Ready or not, here we go! The lazy, hazy days of summer are slipping away from us once again. Here come the golden days of autumn, filled with renewed activity, bountiful harvests, and many opportunities for growth. September is a threshold month, as we step from one season and way of being into another. In some cultures, thresholds are sacred. They invite us to mindful reflection on God with us in the big and small transitions of our lives – from summer to fall, outdoors to indoors, even from room to room in our homes. We could take up the simple spiritual practice of honoring thresholds: pausing to breathe and remember the Divine within us – as us – when we move in and out of rooms, buildings, and activities through each day. In the fall, that’s a lot of breathing and remembering! By the time this month is over, the threshold of our beloved building will have a new, inviting look as red doors with a new sign above them say “Come on in! Welcome to Unity!” And when people cross over our threshold, what will they find? That depends on us! We have set the intention to be a community that Love is building. May a sense of love be one of the first things people notice when they come through the doors of Unity Spiritual Life Center. We’ve also set the intention to be a community where we “grow in spiritual understanding and…transform our world through service.” There is evidence within this newsletter that we are living these intentions. Check out the details about our Seven-week Small Group Book Study which will begin the first week of October. You voted, and the book we will be using is The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer. Here’s a link to an interview he had with Oprah if you want a preview: http://www.oprah.com/own-super-soul-sunday/Full-Episode-Oprah-and -Michael-Singer-on-The-Untethered-Soul-Video. If you have felt a little bit at the edges of our spiritual community and wonder how to feel more connected, this is a fantastic way to do that. Sign up for a book and a time at our table in the Fellowship Hall. You will also find evidence of Unity as a community in service to the world. We serve through Prayer: participating in Unity’s 20th Annual World Day of Prayer with a labyrinth walk at Gilbert Park on the second Thursday of September, the 12th. Offerings of time and effort: serving a 3-hour shift in the Lost Tots and Displaced Adults booth at the Fair; contributing food for 25 homeless teenagers at Rod’s House on the third Wednesday of each month; making sandwiches for homeless folks in our area one Sunday every four months. Financial support: our fund for sandwich-making food and supplies is empty and ready to be filled! Come to think of it, the summer season is a lean one for our overall financial picture. With everyone’s help, we see this turning around. Thank you and thank you, God! Goodbye, sweet Summer. Thank you for all the gifts we received from you. Welcome, Autumn. Thank you for renewing our energy as we enter this season of service, growth, and love. Peace, Cheryl

helpful in reducing free-radical damage.

Turmeric Derived from turmeric, the spice that gives curry powder its yellow color, curcumin is a potent antioxidant that's been shown to be particularly helpful in reducing free-radical damage. It reduces inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis. Additionally, it appears to inhibit the activity of certain proteins that may trigger the growth of breast tumors and may also lower high cholesterol levels. Turmeric, the spice has long been used by Indian healers in the Ayurveda medicine to strengthen liver function, and many alternative practitioners today prescribe curcumin to people with the liver ailment hepatitis C. Turmeric also helps prevent the formation of blood clots that can lead to heart attack. As a supplement one to three 500mg capsules daily with food is the suggested dosage. Many commercial preparations combine curcumin with bromeliad. The two appear to work best together and bromeliad may increase the absorption of curcumin. I have been taking 500mg. three times a day and feel it is helping my arthritis. If you don't want to take the supplement you can always use the spice turmeric to flavor your food. Curcumin is not the same as cumin, which is also found in curry powder.

10:30 am Our September Sundays this year are like our Valley – filled with a varied and bountiful array of good things to be experienced! We thank Jenette St. George for leading us to our guest speaker, Kathleen Ellis and the powerful story of transformation she has to share. Cheryl will come back from a vacation break ready to share more of the keen insights of shame researcher Brene Brown. On the 22 nd, we will celebrate the official end of summer and beginning of fall with a Music Sunday and potluck lunch. Then we will complete this month of five Sundays with a report back from Family Camp. See you on Sunday!

September 1: “Our Soul Purpose”

Guest Speaker: Kathleen Ellis

Kathleen is an award-winning motivational speaker, workshop facilitator, and also provides individual life coaching. She has spent the past twenty years working with the human energy system as a Reiki Master and Therapeutic Healing Touch Practitioner, engaging the complex energy characteristics of the human body to assist others in finding balance and answers within themselves. Come hear her story of growing up in a highly abusive home to receiving a miracle on Christmas Day that lead to her soul purpose! ~Kathleen will be offering a Book Signing for her new book, “The Darkness Cannot Keep Us: Choosing a Better Tomorrow” after both services.

September 8: “Minding the Gap, Staying Engaged”

News from the

Prayer Ministry

Your prayer ministry continues to maintain a presence at Unity Spiritual Life Center. Your current prayer team consists of: Barb Allen, Sandy Bullock, Sharon Hamson, Candy Christofaro, Patricia Flores and Marilyn Freed. We recently held a retreat where we talked about the different types of listening and the different ways we each hear the same thing. Rev. Cheryl led us through an exercise that helped us identify our individual action styles. We have decided to have one prayer partner available for both services. The prayer partner will be available by 9:30 for the early service folks and then after the later service. While we are mighty in the service of the Great Spirit, we are few in numbers right now and are trying to conserve our energy. In September we will participate in Unity’s World Day of Prayer. Have you ever thought about walking a labyrinth? Here is your opportunity for a guided experience. On Thurs, Sept 12, USLC will celebrate World Day of Prayer at the labyrinth at Gilbert Park (by the Allied Arts / Warehouse Theater facility). We will take the prayer request cards that have been submitted and read the names aloud while in a circle around the labyrinth. Rev Cheryl will us lead in a brief prayer and meditation to set the tone for our walk thru the labyrinth for all those who wish to participate. The first two Sundays in Sept, a card will be inserted in the bulletins for you to write the names of people you would like held in prayer. The Prayer Ministry will be at the walk to help facilitate the blessing of the prayer cards. Please consider joining us for the special service. It is a very spiritual experience. As always, we are available after service to pray with you or to hold you in the sacred space. Your prayer requests are always held in confidence. If you’d like to become part of the prayer ministry, or would like more information please contact one of us. Blessings, Barb

When we are feeling the love in our families, at work, even in our spiritual community, there is nothing better! When our values and our actions align, our hearts expand, our spirits rise, and all is well with our world. But, oh my goodness, what do we do when there’s a gap between what we say we want to be and how we act with one another? According to Brene Brown, that is when we are called to dare greatly, chase away shame and blame, and find our way back to the healing power of connection. And she offers us practical ways to do that!

September 15: “Learning Worthiness, Living Wholeheartedly” It turns out, staying engaged with one another takes courage and effort. Here is where the people we care about most can be our teachers, if we allow them to be. In Daring Greatly, Brene Brown devotes the last chapter to “Wholehearted Parenting.” Whether we have children or not, she gives us plenty of food for thought about how we can stay open and relate to others in more wholehearted ways. What does that mean? Do the words vulnerability, kindness, and becoming “Real” ring a bell? It seems scary at first, but it is so worth it!

September 22: “We’ve Got the Music” Sunday

One Service at 10:00 am!

Summer is over. School is in session. Let’s make this a great “welcome back” celebration for our Unity community! Invite your friends, and bring some food to share for the potluck after the service. Let’s create a powerful vibration of Divine Energy as we enjoy special music, congregational singing, and a special meditation and gratitude ritual led by Rev. Cheryl. Thank you in advance to our faithful and faith-filled Music Team led by Music Director LeAnne Watrous and Pianist Sylvia Holtman! With them at the helm, we DO have the music!

September 29: “Challenges, Choices, and Cheering for One Another” Nine people from Unity of Yakima went to Family Camp at Cispus (near Randall) the end of August. What was it like? What did they learn? What did they love? Find out the scoop this Sunday. Our Board president, Marilyn Freed, who attended with her granddaughter, agreed to help this to happen. We look forward to hearing all about it as they share what camp with a challenge course is really like.

Financial Report We’re having an

August Operational Income: $7434 Planned Monthly Income: $9800 Expenses: $8672 Planned Monthly Expenses: $9800 We gratefully share what we receive! Unity believes in the spiritual practice of tithing. As we share our income with others, we also generously receive.
