Dear Educator, Thank you for agreeing to act as clinical educator for the Physiotherapy student undertaking this module. This booklet aims to provide information that will assist you in supporting a student on placement. Students are informed from the outset that it is their responsibility to maximise their learning during placement periods facilitated by you, the educator. Due to the synchronous nature of placements and academic modules, students are often required to complete module assessments on their return to University, that relate strongly to their clinical experiences. These assessments may draw on materials that are already a part of placement learning. However, there may be occasion when students are required to collect additional information or undertake specific learning tasks. Many of these activities can enhance their placement learning and may benefit from educator input or from informal consideration when planning their learning schedule. The following information relates to the modules that the student is currently undertaking; the assessments and deadlines that are required for these modules and any materials that they are asked to collect during placement periods. Additional time to complete these activities is NOT formally scheduled into the placement period. However, you may consider it appropriate to negotiate an approach to working hours or learning that facilitates completion of these tasks. For each placement, the core module to which the placement is attached and any additional modules for which materials must be collected are outlined. In addition, modules that occur alongside these, for which the placement may provide opportunities for practice/consolidation of skills, are outlined in italics. The student may, or may not, wish to explore skills for these additional modules at the time of their placement with you.

If you would like to discuss this further or have any queries, please don‟t hesitate to contact me or the Programme Director at the addresses given below.

Many thanks and regards,

Teri Taylor Senior Lecturer, Clinical Placement Co-ordinator for Physiotherapy.

Clinical Practice 7 This placement requires materials to be collected for the following 3 modules.

PL0614 - Client Centred Physiotherapy Module summary This module aims to enable students to explore client centred practice in the context of complex physiotherapy cases and develops their awareness and application of relevant health and policy initiatives.

Preparation work during placement: Background: There are 2 sets of seminars, immediately post-placement, allocated to student theory / practice enquiry. This relates to the following expected placement learning. a) The student will undertake independent study on the topic of client – centeredness both generally and in relation to the client groups appropriate to the placement setting. b) Undertake reflective enquiry into the context of client centred practice in the specialist /core area of practice, and relate this to an individual case study.

The student will then feedback during two seminars after the placement. The seminars will be developed around the groups students worked in during week 8 in seminar 2 and involve individual and group feedback (groups allocated in seminar 2, week 8).

Student Activity following placement: During the course of the placement students will each need to collect reflective information using the proforma that their group designed prior to the placement. They will need to use this information to prepare an individual 10 minute presentation on the following topic – this is for delivery after the placement, not as part of the placement learning outcomes.

Discuss how the treatment /management for one particular patient (case/client) was client centred.

There is an expectation that the student will support this work with references, and will refer to the patient /their relationship, personal attitude, behaviour, models and the context of care.

PL0608 - Core Skills for professional practice - transition Module summary This module will provide the student with the opportunity to prepare for the transition from unqualified to qualified status. The module focuses upon enhancing skills acquired from previous modules increasing confidence in skills for professional practice. Overall, the module will encompass aspects of patient assessment utilising skills of clinical reasoning and clinical decision making, analysis and evaluation of theoretical principles underpinning practice, critical reflection and risk assessment and management.

Preparation work during placement: Background: A seminar occurring in January will provide an opportunity to reflect on and discuss a decision made during clinical practice (prompts introduced at the conclusion of the Clinical Reasoning lecture in September 2009 [week 8], see figure below). This seminar could also be useful in terms of thinking about preparation for the module assessment. Thus the purpose of the seminar is to: 1. Stimulate a more rigorous and structured approach to developing decision-making skills through the process of reflection. 2. Facilitate preparation for the module assessment.

Placement activity: Students are asked to: Review a decision that they have made or been involved in through a critical incident/significant event/dilemma. Describe in detail what happened. Describe who was involved. Outline the influences and key issues involved. Indicate how it turned out – the student should explain and analyse this using formal and informal theory relating to their reasoning. Outline what they learnt and how it will influence their future practice.

The above can be completed using a recognised critical incident/reflective tool.

Student activity following placement:

37

Each seminar group will be divided into 4 or 5 smaller groups (4 – 5 persons per group). During the first hour of the workshop there will be an opportunity to discuss decisions made and influences on this. During the second hour there will be an opportunity to „present‟ and discuss a small number of scenarios.

Discussion should include: a brief overview of the chosen case scenario – thinking about the type of detail that would be provided as part of a handover or verbal report to another member of staff clear identification of a significant event clear identification of influences on the decision-making process brief analysis of what were perceived as a key influences clear identification of outcome, and learning / development

Resources such as whiteboard, flipchart, powerpoint slides (max of two slides) can be used to support each discussion.

PL0607 – Collaborative working in Practice Module summary This module will consolidate students' previous experience of university based and practice based inter-professional learning. The aim of the module is to offer students the opportunity to explore the realities of collaborative, interprofessional working for service improvement, whilst on their usual professional placement. Students will also undertake an individual service improvement project to analyse their own professional role in service improvement in the context of collaborative, interprofessional working.

Preparation work during placement: Background: Students are expected to attend a full day workshop relating to this module on October 5 th. They will be provided with more details regarding submission deadlines at this time.

Placement activity: Students are asked to: Complete a mini service improvement project relating to an area of improvement/safety that they have identified. This could include, for example, an improved communications strategy between professional groups, updated/improved patient information cards, recommendations for alterations in manual handling etc. Students are asked to plan, implement and audit the project. This should be small scale, involving an audit of a small number of patients and 38

staff. If implementation is not possible, students are asked to ensure that they have discussed the potential implementation and possible results of audit with more than 1 professional in their area of practice.

Student activity following placement: Following placement, students will be asked to complete a 10 minute professional presentation centring round their findings from a mini-project relating to service improvement that they have completed during their placement period. Service users will be involved as part of a questioning panel for student presentations. The presentation will followed by a 600 word reflective account.
