After The Stateslnan carried a report of a sczun at Vidyasagzu' University in
its 16-Novernber issue, some of the university officials removed the issue from the central library to keep it away fi'om students, teachers and non-teaching staff there. The officials said that the hau,ker had forgotten to deliver the newspaper. Along with the copy of The Statesman, they evett got rid of three other newspapers, university sources said. The 17 November editions initially rnissing from the librar-v were later placed there but not the l6-No-

VU team to Pr,ghgr, ffil; *ftr; MIDNAPORE, Jan. 20. Vidyasagar University has formed a-three-memtrer inquiry committee to probe into the scam of forged bills of around Rs 45,(X)0, which was shown as the expense incurred during the botany and foiesrry department excursin4 for thc univc'rsity's MSc sF:dents in 1998. The cornmittee was yesterday formed at the university's eiecutive council meeting, which was chaired by VU viccchancellor Prof. Swapan pramanick. The meeting begah with hcatcd exchanges among the EC menrhcrs over the matter. The house was even divided when university registrar Dr Himangshu Ghosh presented t[e issue at rhc rricering.
The committee members included
H
dean, faculty ofScience, prof. RN Jana, dean, faculty of Arts and Comnrerce kof. PK Misra and a teacher of Ccntal PK College and an EC member. IvIr Arun Das. Interestingly, the conrnrirtec'has been given no time limrt ro subnrit rheir
report. The scam had created a stir in the area after some reports on this was puhtished in The Statesman (16 November, 3 December and 24 December 2004), which has forced the VU authorities to form
the probe committee to investigate the carse.

I
Decembcr 2003, which he-submitted to then VU registrar, Dr J Debnath. The inspector of police, DDI, Mr TK Ir1aity. said: "The bills showed thai the I
hotel had its address in Midnapore East.
This makes
it very clear thaf the bills
were forged as Midnapore was not bifurcated in 1998." The managers of Pabitra Hotel, Mr pijush Kanti Jana, Mr Gourhari Das and
Mr Chinmoy Ponda also said that the hotel "did not come up in Digha in 1998 and the cash memo no. 6836,6837 and 6836 rv-ere tbrged" as corroborated by
the DDI report. Nevertheless, the VU authorities took no penal measures against the offenders because of their reported CpI-M clout and dumped the DDI report in the cold store.
But the vice-chancellor, prof. pramanick, (former CUTA secretary and still
an executive committee member
of
the
WBCUTA), pleaded his ignorance over thc nraiter when The Statesman contacted him on l4 November 2004.

Chenmanu Bitri ind Ati Hossain Khan, both from Muraroi, have lost one eye
