Project Narrative The university is proposing to continue its growth in Japanese studies and increase the impact on the field through staff expansion, hiring an outreach coordinator who will actively work to host events and spread knowledge about Japan through the region and community, as well as on campus, while planning an outreach workshop to help find ways to cooperate on Japan-related planning in the region, and finally to organize a series of talks about various aspects of pre-modern Japanese culture. Our proposal is as follows: (1) hire one additional faculty member in pre-modern Japanese culture; (2) hire a Regional Outreach Coordinator and launch Regional Outreach Network Initiative; (3) carry out Regional Outreach Workshop; and (4) carry out Pre-modern Japanese Culture Workshop. Brief summary of each project 1) Pre-modern Japanese Culture Faculty Position: A new tenure-track position in Japanese pre-modern history and culture. 2) Regional Outreach Coordinator and Initiative- Funding for new Outreach Coordinator who will lead the Regional Outreach Network Initiative and Regional Outreach Workshop. 3) Regional Outreach Workshop- This will be an annual regional outreach workshop, bringing together scholars from the host institution and 4 or more participants from out of town to discuss ways to increase programming and share resources in the state and surrounding states. 4) Pre-modern Japanese Culture Workshop- This workshop will bring together scholars from Japan (2) Japanese and from the US (2).
