JMU Wireless Network Configuration for Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard” Leopard users are highly encouraged to upgrade to a more recent release, such as OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" or OS X 10.10 "Yosemite".

Connecting When you log into Mac OS X you may see a window similar to the following, asking if you wish to join wireless networks in addition to JMU-Official-Wireless. Mac OS X 10.5 seems to have a bug that prevents logging in to JMU-OfficialWireless correctly from this screen, so click Cancel.

Last Update: August 2015

To join the wireless network, first click on the AirPort Menu in the Menu Bar.

From the AirPort Menu, select JMU-Official-Wireless.

You then will be prompted for your user name and password. Enter your e-ID and password, then click on OK. Checking the box next to Remember this network is not recommended as it will cause Mac OS X to save your user name and password in a way that will cause it not to reconnect when your password changes.

Mac OS X will then prompt you to accept the authentication server’s certificate to initiate encryption. This keeps your e-ID and password safe. To accept the certificate permanently, click on Show Certificate.

The Verify Certificate window will then expand to show information about the certificate. The certificate will be for wireless.jmu.edu, issued by InCommon RSA Server CA.

Check the box next to Always trust “wireless.jmu.edu” and then click Continue.

Mac OS X will attempt to add the certificate to the System Keychain and ask for an administrator password. If your user is not an administrator or you do not wish to do this, click Cancel. Otherwise, enter the username and password you use on your computer and then click OK.

Mac OS X will then attempt to modify the certificate’s trust settings in your login keychain, but unfortunately displays the prompt behind the Verify Certificate window. Click on the titleless window behind the Verify Certificate window.

To unlock your login keychain and trust the certificate, enter the username and password you use on your computer and then click OK. If you do not wish to do this, click Cancel. Your computer will continue connecting to the wireless network but you will be prompted to accept the certificate every time you connect in the future.

It may take several seconds for your computer to acquire an IP address, but to verify your connection to the wireless network, click on the AirPort Menu and see that JMU-Official-Wireless is checked.

Reconnecting If your Mac has previously connected to the JMU-Official-Wireless network, it may automatically attempt to join it again after waking from sleep or logging back in. In this case, you will see the following login window. Enter your e-ID and password, then click on OK.

Troubleshooting If your Mac cannot connect to the wireless network, even with a correct e-ID and password, it may be necessary to remove any previous usernames and passwords that Mac OS X may have saved. You will need an administrator username and password on your computer to do this. Click on the AirPort Menu in the Menu Bar.

From the AirPort Menu, select Open Network Preferences...

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/

The Network section of System Preferences will be displayed with the AirPort network interface already chosen.

If the lock icon in the lower left says Click the lock to make changes, you will have to do so to continue. If it says Click the lock to prevent further changes, however, System Preferences is already unlocked and you should not click the lock icon.

Mac OS X will attempt to unlock System Preferences and ask for an administrator password. Enter the username and password you use on your computer and then click OK. If your user is not an administrator and you do not have another user that is, click Cancel and contact the Help Desk.

After unlocking System Preferences, or if it was already unlocked, click the Advanced... button.

Now click the 802.1X tab in the AirPort window.

On the 8021.X tab, click the triangle next to User Profiles to show connections that Mac OS X has saved usernames and passwords for.

Select WPA: JMU-Official-Wireless (the entire name may not be displayed) then click the minus (-) button beneath the User Profiles list.

This will remove the username and password that your Mac has saved for connecting to the JMU-Official-Wireless network. Click OK.

Click the Go menu in the Menu Bar.

Click Delete from the Edit menu.

You will be prompted to confirm deletion of the JMU-Official-Wireless password. Click the Delete button to continue.

Your saved password will now be cleared.

You may now close Keychain Access and attempt to connect to the wireless network.
