Power play at home

maller families, hectic lifestyles and tough working hours are spurring the demand for home automation in cities. With security, comfort and convenience prioritised, people now want to remotecontrol everything from entry checks of guests at home to lights to airconditioners...

Home automation is gaining traction in urban dwellings, thanks to its capability to address two paramount concerns of today’s generation: first, security and second, comfort. High-end homes are high on technology – nothing else will do for the smart set, says Namrata Kohli

Inside... Smart living Let’s take a sneak peek into a smart home 02

leakage of gas or outbreak of fire with features such as gas leak sensors and smoke detectors. Simply put, today’s wired homes are smart homes or residential units equipped with products and services that add convenience to your lifestyle. Technically, a smart home is equipped with special structured wiring or an automation switchboard (if retrofitted) to enable occupants to remotely control or programme an array of home electronic devices and gadgets by a single device. Thanik B, director, business development and strategy, eco buildings, Schneider Electric India, says “Automated homes have a network of intelligent interconnected devices. They mostly integrate all electrical appliances like air-conditioners, TV, audio visual systems, geysers along with lighting

ou are a working professional and want to know what’s going on at home while you’re away at work. CCTV cameras in all your rooms and common areas help you ensure the safety of your children or elderly parents. Anyone can press a soft panic button in the house, in case of any emergency, to reach you or others for help. And as you enter your home, the boom barrier at the apartment’s entrance, sensing the presence of your car, opens. Your home senses your mood and customises the lighting, fans and air-conditioners to your preferred settings. The doorbell rings and you can actually see your visitor on your iPad or smart phone before letting him in! Your home technology also alerts you to impending dangers such as

control (On/off/dimming), motorised curtain/screen, motorised projector, motion sensors, ambience setting and these are directed to a handheld terminal like mobiles or tablets.” What are the real benefits of living in a fully automated home for the user? First is safety as you can monitor and control the critical areas of the house, even remotely. Second is comfort and convenience - you can open and close doors, draw in and out the window blinds, switch on and off lights and electrical equipment, all with a remote control. You can control air conditioning in specific areas while sitting afar and set customised temperature, lighting, depending on the time of the day and weather. You can set ambience lighting in your dining room, bedroom, home theatre, as per the occasion. Finally with the movement and presence detectors you can actually conserve your electrical energy consumption. Homeowners find it very convenient to control all elements within the house with a centralised control which eliminates the need for running around in the house to switch on (or

off) lights and gadgets, says V Gopal: executive director - projects and planning, Prestige Group, which has installed smart homes technology in their Prestige Golfshir project. Many developers are providing ease of functionality and methods of energy saving to the new age tech-savvy generation and the trend of automated homes in the organised sector is led by the IT cities of Bengaluru, Pune and Gurgaon. The current market size of home automation can be pegged at around R2,000 crore, which includes security control, access control, lighting control, entertainment control, energy management, HVAC, wiring devices, final distribution and others and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14-15%, according to Schneider’s data. And prices? Costs depend on what you want set up at home, but basic automation is likely to start from prices as low as R60,000 with no cap on the upper limit, says CP Singh founder of Smart Automation Technologies Pvt Ltd. 

Shringara is a metaphor of love in its various expressions including the spiritual dimension. Shringara is equally an aesthetic that explores the pleasure of being the lover and exuberance for the beloved, who is also manifestly the divine. Shringara journeys as the king of rasas through forms that bind the ancient to the modern. The book presents a multidisciplinary interpretation through poetry, painting, architecture, visual arts and brings alive the joy of beauty. Adorned with illustrations, myriad representations that seek to capture the essence of the rasa, Shringara will take you into the known and the unknown.
