Creating Records Using MARC 21 For a long time, the indexing of articles was done using the CDS-ISIS information retrieval system. With the migration to the new integrated library system which is the Millennium, a need to re-train indexers in the creation of record using the MARC21 standard came about. A two-day in-house

training on Creating Records Using MARC21 was conducted to indexers and catalogers on Feb. 28 & March 1, 2007 at the EDRC Multi Purpose Room with the following objectives: (1) to enable the participants to create bibliographic records using the MARC21 standards; (2) to familiarize Creating.... see page 2

Creating.... from page 1 the participants with the AACR2 rules for bibliographic description; (3) to aid the participants in the use of subject tools; and (4) to enable the participants to establish access points. The training started with a lecture on Bibliographic Description Using AACR2R with Ms. Purisima Fernando, Head of the Cataloging Section, as the resource person, where she presented rules for descriptive cataloging. A talk on Establishing Access Points by Ms. Willian Frias, Head of the Technical Services, followed which stressed the importance of uniformity and consistency in establishing access points. A detailed session on the Subject Cataloging with particular emphasis on the principles and application of the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) was handled by Ms. Ana B. Fresnido, Library Director. Ms. Elizabeth Padilla, Periodicals Librarian, tackled the use of other Subject

Indexing Tools particularly subject thesaurus like OECD macrothesaurus, EUROVOC, UNESCO thesaurus, ILO thesaurus and online subject indexes like ProQuest. On the second day, A. Fresnido talked lengthily Ms. Purisima Fernando presents cataloging on MARC21 rules. and the application of the said standard records in the different databases and to records creation. The training to revise/update the in-house indexing concluded with a meeting of indexers to policies and procedures of the Library. come up with plans on how to go about the cleaning/editing of the existing

GOING ON LINE : a Dry Run As part of the Training of Trainers Program, the three (3) faculty librarians who are being trained as resource speakers did a dry run of the presentation of their lectures, with their colleagues and selected library staff as audiences last March 20 at the EDRC Multi-Purpose room. With the theme Going Online : Innovative Approaches to Library Services, Ms. Jocelyn Balangue talked on Online Ordering as applied to libraries. Included in her lecture were the historical background, advantages and disadvantages, concerns and issues of online ordering. She also did a comparison between manual and online ordering and identified online jobbers and bookstores offering the service to libraries and individuals. Discussing the importance of Webliography and how it is created is the topic of the second speaker, Ms. Marita Valerio. She pointed

out that in line with the mission of academic libraries as resource centers of excellence in information, providing timely and instant access to various formats of information to researchers should be a librarian’s major concern. She added that with the Internet as an instant source of information, libraries should create websites that will provide a patron-centered step-by-step guide in creating either basic or advanced online library services and that a library homepage should provide links to searching tools such as online public access catalog (OPAC), webliographies, and pathfinders. Webliographies, as digital equivalents of bibliographies, are collections of Internet sites on a particular subject which will help researchers find relevant and useful sources on the World Wide Web. Ms Valerio also advised librarians to take an active role in providing subject access to information on the Internet to guide researchers in using relevant

online information resources. Ms. Willian Frias, on the other hand, lectured on Transaction Log Analysis: Assessing the Online Periodical Collection which aims to help librarians assess their online subscriptions with the end in view of logically and analytically deciding on the renewal of their online subscriptions. Her paper presented the use of the transaction log analysis (TLA) method which basically is a process of analyzing data extracted from transaction logs. Also featured in her paper are the method’s advantages and disadvantages and ways on how to analyze results as basis for decisionmaking. The three (3) speakers will also be presenting their papers in a seminarworkshop that will be sponsored by the Library Committee of the South Manila Inter-institutional Consortium in May.

Reserve Materials for 1st Term, SY 2007-2008 Faculty members are requested to place their required reading materials for 1st term on reserve at least two (2) weeks before the start of classes. The “Reserve Materials Request Form” is available at: http://intranet.dlsu. edu.ph/downloads/forms/pdf/lib_ reservematerials.pdf Previously reserved books, articles or chapters, etc. are automatically removed from the Reserve Section unless a notice to retain such is received by the Circulation/ Reserve or the Filipiniana librarians.

Community Stations of the Cross CresValenzuela and Riza Fernando, together with selected library staff, joined the Community Stations of the Cross held at the University grounds last March 20 and lead in the prayer and reflection of the 3rd Station of the Cross. This university-wide activity is one of the Lenten Devotions organized

by the Lasallian Pastoral Office to give the academic community a chance to “journey with Jesus and retrace the experience of His passion, death and resurrection through prayers and acts of sacrifices.”

Faculty Annual Recollection Willian Frias, Cynthia Cordova and Cres Valenzuela were three of the more than 30 DLSU faculty members who took time out from their busy schedule to attend the Annual Lenten Recollection last March 21 at the Oasis of Prayer, Silang, Cavite. The recollection master was Bishop Antonio Tagle, the Bishop of the Diocese of Imus who discussed on sacraments and on S.O.S. or the “Spirituality of Sapat” (Spirituality of Enough).

“In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.”
