South Carolina farmers hit hard by excessive summer rains will soon get some relief. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Thomas J. Vilsack notified Governor Nikki Haley late last month that he approved her request for a Secretarial disaster declaration for South Carolina counties that suffered losses due to excessive rains that began March 1, 2013. The declaration came a little more than a week after Governor Haley and Commissioner Hugh Weathers joined other agriculture leaders for a tour of one of the state’s hard hit areas, Dorchester County. “I am pleased with Secretary Vilsack’s quick response to South Carolina’s request. The agriculture industry contributes greatly to the state’s economy, and this unusually wet summer has impacted the work of our farmers. I am grateful that Governor Haley recognizes the value of our industry and that she took the time to see what our growers face given the excess rains,” said South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers. Secretary Vilsack has designated the following 36 South Carolina counties as primary natural disaster areas: Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Berkeley, Calhoun, Charleston, Cherokee, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Colleton, Darlington, Dillon, Dorchester, Edgefield, Florence, Georgetown, Greenville, Hampton, Horry, Jasper, Laurens, Lee, Marion, Marlboro, Newberry, Orangeburg, Pickens, Richland, Saluda, Spartanburg, Sumter, Union, Williamsburg, and York. The following counties have been designated as contiguous disaster counties: Abbeville, Anderson, Chester, Fairfield, Greenwood, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lexington, McCormick, and Oconee. A Secretarial disaster designation means farmers in both primary and contiguous counties can apply for USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loans. Farmers in those counties have eight months to apply from the date of the Secretarial disaster declaration. Interested farmers can contact their local FSA offices.

2nd Annual SC AgriBiz & Farm Expo Set for Early 2014 Members of South Carolina’s leading industry sector, Agribusiness, are getting ready for the 2nd Annual SC AgriBiz & Farm Expo happening January 16-17, 2014. The expo is returning to the Florence Civic Center for the second year. Agribusiness has a $34 billion economic impact in South Carolina and accounts for nearly 200,000 jobs. The SC AgriBiz & Farm Expo brings all facets of the state’s agricultural community together to promote the industry and educational opportunities. “South Carolina is home to both large and small-scale producers, and the great thing about this show is that there is something for everybody. Agribusiness is a dominant force in our state’s economy and this show is designed to make that impact even greater,” said Hugh Weathers, Commissioner of Agriculture. The expo will offer a wide-range of tractors, equipment and farm products on display at the Trade Show. Daily admission is $5. There are also ticketed events, like The Taste of South Carolina reception and Commissioner’s Breakfast benefitting the South Carolina Commissioner’s School for Agriculture. The Florence Civic Center is located at 3300 West Radio Drive, Florence, 29501. For more information on events and expo sponsors and organizers, please visit http://scagribizexpo.com/.

SC’s Soggy Summer I blinked and the summer was over. I know from experience a lot of moms and dads out there were glad to see school start, but students are never ready to give up their summer break. The summer of 2013 will certainly go down in the history books as one of the wettest on record, and with good reason too. Counties across South Carolina have seen anywhere from 7 to 21 more inches of rainfall than normal this year, according to the South Carolina State Climatology Office.
