MATHEMATICAL MODELING AND SOFTWARE AREA OF RESEARCH

The reseach centre for mathematical modeling and software is affiliated to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences within the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics. The faculty provides training to the students enrolled in the specific study programmes and also training in mathematics for all the students in the University. It has 42 members, out of which 35 have a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics or Informatics. There are 6 Ph.D. supervisors, 3 members of the faculty: G. Pitiş (Geometry), G. Munteanu (Geometry), R. Păltănea (Analysis), and 3 associated members: G.V. Orman (Probabilities), G. Atanasiu (Applied Mathematics), E. Ciurea (Informatics). The department coordinates a number of 16 doctoral students and hosts 2 postdoctoral researchers.

SHORT HISTORY: The beginning of the Department coincided with the beginning of higher technical education in Braşov in 1949. In 1960 university mathematical education in Brasov, came into being by the founding of the Pedagogical Institute and in 1971 the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics was established. Since then the faculty formed a great number of graduates in the following specializations: mathematics and informatics, mathematics, informatics, applied informatics and informatics in German language. After 1995, several types of masters in applied mathematics and computer sciences were developed. From 1990, doctoral specialization programmes are also available.

RESEARCH FIELDS The members of the department develop a high level research activity in the fields of mathematics and computer sciences. The main directions are the following. 1. Geometric methods and applications of differential equations: Real and complex Lagrange geometry; Theory of submanifolds; Mechanics of microporous media; Applications of partial differential equations; Dynamic systems; Thermoelasticity 2. Real and complex analysis, stochastic modeling and optimization: Approximation theory; Markov processes and applications in reliability; Theory of analytic functions; Brownian motion and applications; Stochastic processes; Fix point theory 3. Algorithms and Software: Parallel distributed programming; Mathematical modeling of engineering problems; Algorithms of programming; Graphs and network optimization; Computer graphics; Machine learning; Cutting and packing problems; IT security; Distributed databases; Data mining The scientific results of our members were published in main stream journals and proceedings of international conferences. In the last five years, 50 articles were published in ISI journals and other 25

Transilvania University of Brasov articles in ISI conference proceedings. Also the members of the department published several books in prestigious printing houses: G. Muntanu (Kluwer), R. Paltanea (Birkhauser), M. Marin (Elliot & Fitzpatrick), V. Pescar (Bulgarian Academy) and M. Neagu (Wiley). The works of the members of the department are widely cited in ISI publications.

The following professors obtained the Romanian Academy award for mathematics: G. Atanasiu (1980), G. Pitis (1991), G. Munteanu (2006), R. Păltănea (2007), E. Păltănea (2010).

The members of the department run research national and international grants:  New results in the geometry of Finsler, Lagrange and Hamilton spaces (G. Munteanu)  Studies in approximation theory and optimization problems; stochastic approximation and applications (R. Păltănea),  Monotonic proprieties, extremum principles and applications (M. Pascu),  Brownian motion and Applications: monotonicity and extremum properties (M. Pascu),  The minimization of execution time of some algorithms in graph theory and applications of graphs in noncommutative geometry.(L. Ciupala)  Combinatorial optimization methods and the metaheuristic in operational researches (M. Cocan)  Statistical factor analysis for the performance behavior of the tomcat web container (L. Sangeorzan - international)  The Geometry of Finsler Spaces with Berwald-Moor metrics (G. Atanasiu – international) The Faculty and the Department of Mathematics and Informatics organized some prestigious scientific conferences at “Transilvania” University of Brasov. We mention:  Complex Functions and Applications (2004, 2006),  9-eme Colloque Franco-Roumain de Mathematiques Appliquees (2008),  Riemaniann Geometry and its Applications (2008),  The Seven Congress of Romanian Mathematicians (2011),  Finsler Extensions of Relativity Theory (2011).

COOPERATION AND PARTNERSHIPS The members of the department developed a fruitful scientific collaboration within large projects with other universities, with other faculties from our university and with other national and international universities in the fields of mathematics and computer science. Mention should only be made of:  The international partnerships with the Foundation on Research Development in the Field of Finsler Geometry (Moscow), Kauno Technologijos Universitetas (Kaunas), Tallin University of Technology EE, (Tallin), and Tartu Ulikool. 

The bilateral contracts Socrates/Erasmus, 2005-2013, for student and lecturers exchange, agreements made with some universities from Germany ( Universität Oldenburg, Fachhochschule Fulda, Fachhochschule Wiesbaden, Hochschule Heilbronn) - Coodinated by L .Sângeorzan

Organization, in partnership with Bloomfield College (USA) of a master’s program in computer science

Cooperation with teachers from Germany for specialization in informatics in German.

There is an intensive cooperation with industrial companies:

Transilvania University of Brasov 

Organizing specialized practice with software companies in Brasov (Siemens, iQuest, Pentalog, Route 66, LSM, etc.)

Systematic involvement of industry partners in organizing the annual session of research students

Collaboration with Siemens company, materialized in the provision of computer equipment for a laboratory

Development of educational and technological partnership with Micosoft, Oracle and other companies: Mention of the following programs should be made: -

Sun Academy (since 2008): Addressed to our students who want to take professional certifications in Java field, on standard and enterprise platform and to become software architects.

-

Oracle Academy (since 2009) - Advanced Computer Science and Enterprise Business Applications: It is designed for college and university computer science departments, this option provides faculty with Oracle database and middleware software, and curriculum for teaching use.

-

Oracle University Initiative (since 2010): it provides vouchers of 40% discount for Oracle exams and Oracle University trainings for our students

-
