See Level Up Maths in action! Find out how one school is having huge success with Level Up Maths

Wheelers Lane is a newly-built state-of-the-art boys technology college in Birmingham. We asked the teachers and pupils to give their verdict on what difference Level Up Maths is making to their Maths lessons... Ensures clear progression “The pupils absolutely love being able to identify the levels in the books and the crucial part is that the books have been sub-levelled as well as levelled.”

Activities and games make maths engaging and fun “LiveText has had a huge impact and we use it all the time. You can flash up individual questions on the interactive whiteboard that a group of pupils might be struggling with, zoom in on that question and work through it as a class.”

Teacher support and online assessment to help you get accurate results “We use the Teacher Planning and Assessment Packs to help with planning. The packs provide even the basics such as helping with starter sentences, introducing topics and what pointers you need to make pupils aware of.”

Functional Skills embedded throughout “The Level Up Maths scheme of work integrates Functional Skills throughout and introduces our pupils to it gradually from Year 7, so that when they get to GCSE it won’t be a whole new concept for them to learn.”

Improves results and raises attainment “Attainment has been consistent with other schools and for our school has improved significantly. The number of Level 7s we now get in Year 8 is far higher than it was before.”

“It’s not boring maths, lessons are fun and enjoyable. Every day we learn something new.” Year 7 Pupil

TASK 1: Sketching and drawing linear graphs Points to remember The normal form of a linear equation is y ⫽ ax ⫹ b.

Each homework task reminds pupils what they have learned in the lesson, so that they can apply it to the questions.

The graph of the equation y ⫽ ax ⫹ b has gradient a and intercept on the y-axis at (0, b). When you sketch a linear graph, label the axes and mark the origin and the intercept on the y-axis. To make an accurate drawing of a linear graph, calculate the coordinates of three points, plot them and draw a line through them using a ruler and sharp pencil.

1.1 Understanding properties of whole numbers Objectives

Why do this?

You can find factors of whole numbers. You can find multiples of whole numbers. You can identify prime numbers.

If you are tiling a kitchen, knowing the factors of an area will help you decide which size of tile to use to minimise the number that need to be bought.

Get Ready 1. Which one of these numbers is in the four-times table and the five-times table? 4 10 12 20 25 2. Which one of these numbers will divide exactly into 12 and into 16? 3 4 6 8 12 16 3. Which one of these numbers cannot be divided exactly by any other number except 1? 10 16 23 27 36 42

Key Points A factor of a number is a whole number that divides exactly into the number. The factors of every number always include 1 and the number itself. The factors of 8 are 1, 2, 4 and 8. A multiple of a number is the result of multiplying the number by a positive whole number. The first five multiples of 8 are 8, 16, 24, 32 and 40. A prime number is a number greater than 1 which has only two factors: itself and 1. For example, 7 is a prime number because its only factors are 1 and 7.

Example 1

1, 20 2, 10 4, 5

We all use numbers as part of our everyday life. Some of the objects that you might use every day such as mobile phones and cash cards need to be protected by powerful codes. Most of the codes used involve very large prime numbers.

Example 2

Find all the factors of 20.

Write down all the multiples of 6 between 10 and 40.

12, 18, 24, 30, 36 Objectives

Before you start

In this chapter you will: identify factors, multiples and prime numbers find the lowest common multiple and highest common factor of two numbers work with negative numbers know the correct order to carry out the different arithmetic operations apply the laws of indices.

You need to: know your multiplication tables understand index notation.

Example 3

Write down the factors in pairs. Each pair of numbers multiplies to give 20. This ensures that no factors are forgotten.

All these numbers divide into 20 exactly.

12 is the first number in the 6 times table that is greater than 10.

Which of these numbers are prime numbers?

Probability

5.1 •

Understanding the vocabulary used in probability.

Draw two axes to indicate the values on each spinner.

If you want to predict the chance of something happening in the future, you use probability. ◦ An experiment is a repeatable process that gives rise to a number of outcomes. ◦ An event is a collection (or set) of one or more outcomes.

The sample space is represented by the 16 points on the diagram.

There are 4 ⫻ 4 ⫽ 16 points. Each of these points is equally likely as the spinners are fair.

◦ A sample space is the set of all possible outcomes of an experiment. •

Events and sample spaces are sets and set notation is used to describe them. We use upper case letters to denote events. The probability of an event is the chance that the event will occur as a result of an experiment.

Spinner 2

◦ Where outcomes are equally likely the probability of an event is the number of outcomes in the event divided by the total number of possible outcomes in the sample space. ◦ An impossible event has probability 0 and an event that is certain has probability 1. ◦ As all events have probabilities between impossible (0) and certain (1), then probabilities are usually written as a fraction, a decimal or sometimes as a percentage. In S1 we will write probabilities as fractions or decimals.

a Find the probability of the die landing with the number 5 face up.

There are four 5s and 16 outcomes altogether, so 4 ⫽ __1 P(F)⫽ ___ 16 4

b

6 ⫽ __ 3 P(More than 5) ⫽ ___ 16 8

b Find the probability of throwing an odd number.

a

There are six faces and one has the number 5 on it, so the probability of landing with the number 5 face up 1 or 0.16. . is __ 6

b

The odd numbered faces are 1, 3 and 5, so the probability of throwing 3 ⫽ __1 or 0.5. an odd number is __ 6 2

The sample space has six outcomes since any one of the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 could land face up. The die is fair, so all outcomes are equally likely.

You can use F to represent the event ‘the sum of the scores is exactly 5’.

4

a Example 1 A fair die has each face numbered 1 to 6. The die is thrown once and the number landing face up is recorded.

3 2 Spinner 1

There are 4 outcomes for this part. They are 1 ⫹ 4, 2 ⫹ 3, 3 ⫹ 2 or 4 ⫹ 1.

P( ) is short for ‘probability of’. The answer P(F) can also be written as 0.25.

There are six sums more than 5 for this part (shaded blue). They form the top right hand corner of the diagram: 2 ⫹ 4, 3 ⫹ 4, 4 ⫹ 4, 3 ⫹ 3, 4 ⫹ 3, 4 ⫹ 2. The answer can also be written as 0.375.

Exercise 5A For each of the following experiments, identify the sample space and find the probability of the event specified.

There is one outcome in the event ‘5 is face up’ divided by the total of six possible outcomes.

1

Throwing a six sided die once and recording if the number face up is odd or even. Find the probability of an even number landing face up.

The event ‘throwing an odd number’ has three outcomes i.e. 1, 3 or 5 face up.

2

Tossing two coins. Find the probability of the same outcome on each coin.

3

A card is drawn from a pack of 52 playing cards. Find the probability that the card is a heart.

4

A card is drawn from a pack of 52 playing cards, its suit is recorded then it is replaced and another card is drawn. Find the probability of drawing a spade and a club in any order.

5

Throwing a die and tossing a coin. Find the probability of a head and a 6.

6

Throwing two six sided dice and recording the product of the values on the two sides that are uppermost. Find the probability of the answer being greater than or equal to 24.

There are three outcomes divided by the total of six possible outcomes.

Example 2 Two fair spinners each have four faces numbered 1 to 4. The two spinners are thrown together and the sum of the numbers indicated on each spinner is recorded. Find the probability of the spinners indicating a sum of a exactly 5, b more than 5. 78

Statics of a particle

4

`Static' means `stationary' or `at rest', and this chapter looks at the forces acting on a particle that is not moving. Later in this chapter the various types of forces that may act on a particle will be considered. At this point you only need to remember from chapter 2 that you can describe a force acting on a particle by stating its magnitude and its direction. 92

Forces are measured in newtons. The precise definition of a newton is given in chapter 5 (p. 92). A force of magnitude of 8 newtons is usually written 8 N.

4.1 Resultant forces Suppose two forces F1 and F2 act on a particle as shown. As forces are vectors they may be added by the triangle law (see p. 15) You can redraw the diagram as: F2

Dynamics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane

Mass is measured in kilograms (kg) and the basic unit of force is the newton (N). The newton is defined so that a force of 1 newton produces an acceleration of 1 m s 2 when applied to a particle of mass 1 kg. A force of F newtons applied to a particle of mass m kg will result in an acceleration of a m s 2 where:

F2

F ˆ ma F1

R

Force and acceleration are vectors because each has a magnitude and a direction. Therefore the acceleration produced is in the direction of the resultant force acting on the body. Newton's second law can be summarised by the equation F ˆ m a. This is often called the equation of motion of the particle.

F1

Then R ˆ F1 ‡ F2 is the resultant of the two forces. Use a double arrow to indicate that R is a resultant force rather than a third force acting on the particle.

&

The force F applied to a particle is proportional to the mass m of the particle and the acceleration produced.

Another way of adding forces is to use the parallelogram rule. (See p. 15).

F ˆ ma

F2

Newton's third law R &

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

This means that if a particle A exerts a force on a particle B then B exerts a force on A of the same magnitude but in the opposite direction. These equal and opposite forces are known as reactions between the particles. Newton's third law is also true when two bodies which are not both particles have contact. This law is used when studying normal contact forces ± as in chapter 4. A particle at rest on the floor exerts a force on that floor. The floor also exerts a force of equal magnitude but opposite direction on the particle and the particle remains at rest.

Particles A and B, of mass 3m and m respectively, are attached to the ends of a light inextensible string of length 3h. The string passes over a small, smooth pulley P, fixed at the edge of a rough, horizontal table. The coefficient of friction between A and the table is m. The system is held at rest with the string taut, A being on the table and B hanging freely over the edge of the table. The distances AP and PB are 2h and h respectively, and B is at height h above a horizontal floor, as shown in the diagram. The system is now released from rest and begins to move. (a) Show that, until B hits the floor, the acceleration of A is 1 3m)g. 4 (1 (b) Find the speed of A immediately before B hits the floor. After B hits the floor, A continues to move on the table and comes to rest before reaching P. (c) Deduce the range of values of m for which the motion described above is possible. [E] 43 A small sphere R, of mass 0.08 kg, moving with speed 1.5 m s 1 , collides directly with another small sphere S, of mass 0.12 kg, moving in the same direction with speed 1 m s 1 . Immediately after the collision R and S continue to move in the same direction with speeds U m s 1 and V m s 1

3 4

Worked exam-style questions and examples provide step-by-step guidance on how to tackle questions.

You can solve simultaneous equations by elimination or substitution. You can use the substitution method to solve simultaneous equations where one equation is linear and the other is quadratic. You usually start by finding an expression for x or y from the linear equation. When you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative number, you need to change the inequality sign to its opposite. To solve a quadratic inequality you: (i) solve the corresponding equation, then (ii) sketch the graph of the quadratic function, then (iii) use your sketch to find the required set of values.
