Letter from the Editor This Year’s Reading List There are misconceptions people have about certain professions that when you think about it is so completely bizarre. For example, some people think that a priest only prays, but like the head of any organisation, they counsel people, manage the church, plan activities, etc. Sommeliers don’t just drink wine all day and contrary to popular belief my job doesn’t involve just reading lots and lots of books. In fact I wish it did but as I start to arrange meetings for January 2013, I find myself wondering, like everyone else, where did 2012 go? And what about all those books I was supposed to read this year? To add salt to injury, of all the truly great books published in 2012, such as Gone Girl, Don’t Tell the Wolves I’m Home, Why Be Happy When You Could be Normal, I bagged (brown paper bagged) a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey. I don’t usually subscribe to the latest trends but I just had to see what the buzz was about. From what I can tell, the steamy scenes have no doubt contributed to its gigantic success but it is the cliché Cinderella story formula — rich-man-sweeps-innocent-beauty-off-her-feet — that probably resonates with all the women out there. In stark contrast, this year’s Man Booker Prize Winner, Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel, restores my hope in our literary workplace. Mantel is the first British writer to win the prize twice and some people have pointed out that she won it both times for the same Cromwell trilogy. But stylistically, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies couldn’t be more different! This is how Mantel is brilliant. Most writers’ books bear a consistency to each other; either because the writer can only write one way, or is afraid they will lose the audience if they write another way (a well-founded fear). Mantel too could have produced a second Wolf Hall and nobody would have faulted her for it – it was brilliant, won the most coveted literary prize and everyone loved it after all. But she didn’t. Wolf Hall is an old-fashioned novel in the best sense, with all the richness, enormity and depth that the term suggests. It covers more than thirty years of Cromwell’s life, from his wretched childhood to potent middle age. But gone is all that expansiveness in Bring Up the Bodies which spans less than a year and feels like it’s taking place in real time. It is almost a play and her dialogue is superb with all the flavour of Tudor English without slipping into pastiche. What’s more is the emotional intelligence with which Henry, Boleyn, Cromwell and others are depicted as characters we can feel for, as opposed to just know about. Mantel has laboured so hard on their portraits that we relate to their sweat and strain as if it was our own. Books truly expand your mind and can transform your world. Every time I get lost in one, I wonder why I don’t read more. So next year I’ve decided my new role in the company is to just read all day long. Ahhh bliss. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Bookazine. Shonee xx

Asian InteRest THE CURIOUS DIARY OF MR JAM Nury Vittachi

He tried to bring comedy to Asia, but everyone just laughed at him. Sam Jam’s whole life had been a tragic mistake. As a humorist in Asia he had repeatedly been sacked, blacklisted and chased out of buildings. But he refuses to believe that his audiences of conservative Muslims, Communist officials, religious police and Asian citizens in general have no sense of humor. This funny, poignant tale, which the author describes as “a novel for legal reasons”, is more than just laugh-out-loud entertainment. It shines an essential light on what global culture will look like as eastern ways of thinking start to dominate.

TOMBSTONE: THE UNTOLD STORY OF MAO’S GREAT FAMINE Yang Jisheng

When Samuel Pickens’ great love tragically loses her life, Samuel travels the globe, Annabelle always on his mind. Eventually, he comes face to face with the mirror image of his obsession in the last place he would expect, and must discover her secrets and decide how far he will go for a woman he loves.

The most powerful and important Chinese work of recent years, Yang Jisheng’s Tombstone is a passionate, moving and angry account of one of the 20th century’s most nightmarish events: the killing of an estimated 36 million Chinese in 1958-1961 by starvation or physical abuse.

Reader’s focus Mike Smith, author of In the Shadow of the Noonday Gun talks to us about his book and himself. What inspired you to write In the Shadow of the Noonday Gun? My passion is fishing, particularly big game fishing, and preferably with a very light fly fishing set-up. I have been amazed at how good local, Hong Kong, fishing is and have explored both freshwater and sea fishing in Hong Kong waters for the past 40 years. Because most people are of the belief that Hong Kong waters are polluted and over-fished, I wanted to write a book about my experiences, to show how amazing it actually is. This led to a few ‘stories’ being included in the draft ‘fishing book’ and a couple of friends encouraged me to explore the ‘human Interest’ angle. That led to a wide range of stories, covering police, business, horse racing and general Hong Kong life situations, and hence this book. Are you working on another book? If yes, what is it about? I am working on five books. Most of the Hong Kong fishing book has been written, but I stopped work on it in order to get ‘Noonday Gun’ published. I am also working on a massive, 700 page book which covers fishing reel history from Victorian times to the Second World War. This will only appeal to a limited audience of around 500 people, worldwide. However, collecting reels is a big hobby of mine and I think the book writing. If matters issue needs 24 8 reading

RM_24.indd 8

‘Noonday Gun’ is successful, I have a sequel in the works and a couple of other books I am working on. What are you reading at the moment? I am a prolific reader and am buried in Scandinavian detective stories at the moment. There is an amazing amount of talent to cover. This probably began with the Stieg Larsson trilogy, but writers like Henning Mankell and Jo Nesbo have displayed huge talent for the genre. What was your favourite book as a child? As a child I was brought up with Enid Blyton and the famous ‘Biggles’ books which covered the exploits of First World War fighter pilots. Latterly I adjusted to 19th century exploring and shooting books which had all the drama of exploration of virgin territories and the dangers of hunting big game. Do you have a favourite book quote? My favourite quote is ‘I am a tired old man. But I have killed this fish which is my brother...’ It describes the relationship and respect held between hunter and prey. Written in 1952 by Ernest Hemingway and describing the ‘Old Man’s thoughts when he finally won the battle with the giant marlin in the all-time classic,’ The Old Man and The Sea.

Antifragile Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Antifragility is about loving randomness, uncertainty, opacity, adventure and disorder, and benefitting from a variety of shocks. It is about what to do when you don’t understand. It is a new word because it is a new concept. Many of the greatest breakthroughs in human endeavor come from the trial and error that is part of antifragility. And some of the best systems we know of, including evolution, have antifragility at their heart.

The Icarus Deception Seth Godin

In his bravest and most challenging book yet, Seth Godin shows how we can thrive in an economy that rewards art, not compliance. He explains why true innovators focus on trust, remarkability, leadership, and stories that spread. And he makes a passionate argument for why you should be treating your work as art.

Why I Left Goldman Sachs: A Wall Street Story Greg Smith

On March 14, 2012, more than three million people read Greg Smith’s bombshell Op-Ed in the New York Times titled “Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs.” The column immediately went viral, became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter, and drew passionate responses from former Fed chairman Paul Volcker, legendary General Electric CEO Jack Welch, and New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg. Mostly, though, it hit a nerve among the general public who question the role of Wall Street in society and the callous “take-the-money-and-run” mentality that brought the world economy to its knees a few short years ago. Smith now picks up where his Op-Ed left off describing in page-turning detail how the most storied investment bank on Wall Street went from taking iconic companies like Ford, Sears, and Microsoft public to becoming a “vampire squid” that referred to its clients as “muppets” and paid the government a record half-billion dollars to settle SEC charges. THE TOP GEAR YEARS Jeremy Clarkson We know all about the world according to Clarkson. In a series of record-breaking bestsellers Jeremy has revealed it to be a puzzling, frustrating place where all too often the lunatics seem to be running the asylum. But in The Top Gear Years, we get something rather different. Top Gear was once just a television show about what was probably still known as ‘motoring’. Top Gear magazine arrived in 1993. And that went well. Then, ten years ago, at a former RAF aerodrome in Surrey, Jeremy and his friends built a world that was rather more to his liking: it was called Top Gear HQ. And Top Gear HQ turned out to be to Jeremy what the jungle was to Tarzan: the perfect place to work and play. But they didn’t stop there. With their little corner of the commuter-belt properly sorted out, Jeremy and the boys had a crack at the rest of the world. Soon Top Gear Live was charging around the globe with the subtlety of a mid-seventies rock tour and far-flung outposts were established from North America to China. Five hundred million viewers later, there was an empire of petrol-headed mayhem upon which the sun never set. And all along Jeremy was writing about it, here are the fruits of his labours: the cars, the high jinks, the pleasure and the pain. Brilliantly written and laugh-out-loud funny, The Top Gear Years is Clarkson at his pithy, provocative, hilarious best.

Telephone Interview with

Mitch Albom Interviewer: Amy Cohas

What was the spark that led to the writing of “The Time Keeper”? Just getting older and looking at how I spent my time. These days everyone is time-obsessed. People become obsessed with their Blackberries - that little red light is always competing for your attention. I take a broader view: I was a Blackberry addict – and I had a specific response – I turned it off. I got kind of sick of being a slave to that.

In addition to being a novelist, you are also a highly respected sports journalist. Have you come to see any parallels between the athletes whose stories you cover, and the characters in your books? I guess the only parallel I could draw would be how fleeting things are for a lot of professional athletes: the money, the fame, the adulation, their health. A lot of athletes don’t realize this until it is too late. In “For One More Day” I drew on

Several of your books have become beloved best sellers. What is it that you think people respond to in your work? Well, I don’t know, I’m just grateful everyone is looking for a bit of meaning. “Tuesdays with Morrie” I think had universal appeal because everyone has had a teacher who they remember, who has had an effect on them. “Five People You Meet in Heaven” addresses the fact that so many people ask themselves “does my life matter?” “For One More Day” had a lot to do with my own relationship with my parents. But all of these themes are not just “my story” – they are things that many people can grip on to.

this to depict a character who is a former baseball player with regrets. I have learned lessons about fame being a vapor. What do you think makes a really great story? Well, you have to root for the characters. It has to keep going, something has to happen - you can’t just have somebody experiencing angst and staring out a window. Somebody has to change by the end, somebody has to learn. I want a book to take me someplace different, to have something that stays with me.

a lasso around an idea, and you hope that you won’t miss. One of the most difficult aspects of writing is that there are so many other things competing with books for people’s attention. Compared with Facebook, youTube, cable TV, etc., books just can’t create as much of an uproar. What are you reading right now? I tend to read multiple books at the same time. There is usually one in my office, one in my bag, one in the house. So right now I’ve got “The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared”, “The Imperfectionists” which is a story about newspapers in Europe, “The Book Thief” and the new Tom Wolfe book about Miami.

What do you enjoy most about writing, and what do you find the most difficult? What I enjoy most is the birthing of an idea, which is like capturing the wind. If you get lucky, you get on paper what is in your head and can transform it into letters. Hopefully, others will feel the same way. This is the fun part, but it can also be the most frustrating. You are trying to throw

Are you working on a new book? I think you are always thinking about your next book. Currently I’m working on a non-fiction book about Haiti and what I’ve been able to see and do through my work with an orphanage. Helping children breaks down so many barriers. I’m also working on a novel about envy – people wanting what other people have. It used to be that people who were famous got that way because of real achievements that everyone could make sense of. These days, ordinary people – take “Jersey Shore” for example – are suddenly elevated to star status, and people ask themselves “Why not me?” This is a very dangerous emotion.

CROSS ROADS Wm. Paul Young Anthony Spencer is egotistical, proud of being a self-made business success at the peak of his game, even though the cost of winning was painfully high. A cerebral hemorrhage leaves Tony comatose in a hospital ICU. He ‘awakens’ to find himself in a surreal world, a ‘living’ landscape that mirrors dimensions of his earthly life, from the beautiful to the corrupt. It is here that he has vivid interactions with others he assumes are projections of his own subconscious, but whose directions he follows nonetheless with the possibility that they might lead to authenticity and perhaps, redemption. The adventure draws Tony into deep relational entanglements where he is able to ‘see’ through the literal eyes and experiences of others, but is “blind” to the consequences of hiding his personal agenda and loss that emerge to war against the processes of healing and trust.

So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate... until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

Crossed In search of a future that may not exist and faced with the decision of who to share it with, Cassia journeys to the Outer Provinces in pursuit of Ky - taken by the Society to his certain death - only to find that he has escaped, leaving a series of clues in his wake. Cassia's quest leads her to question much of what she holds dear, even as she finds glimmers of a different life across the border. But as Cassia nears resolve and certainty about her future with Ky, an invitation for rebellion, an unexpected betrayal, and a surprise visit from Xander who may hold the key to the uprising and, still, to Cassia's heart change the game once again. Nothing is as expected on the edge of Society, where crosses and double crosses make the path more twisted than ever.

Reached Cassia faces the ultimate choices in the long-anticipated conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Matched Trilogy After leaving Society and desperately searching for the Rising—and each other—Cassia and Ky have found what they were looking for, but at the cost of losing each other yet again: Cassia has been assigned to work for the Rising from within Society, while Ky has been stationed outside its borders. But nothing is as predicted, and all too soon the veil lifts and things shift once again. In this gripping conclusion to the #1 New York Times bestselling Matched Trilogy, Cassia will reconcile the difficulties of challenging a life too confining, seeking a freedom she never dreamed possible, and honoring a love she cannot live without.

SAFARI: A PHOTICULAR BOOK Dan Kainen & Carol Kaufmann Safari is a magical journey. Readers, as if on safari, encounter eight wild animals that come alive. Using an innovative lenticular-based technology, precision sliding lenses, and original four-color video imagery, each image is like a 3-D movie on the page, delivering a rich, fluid, immersive visual experience.

SEA-MONKEYS MAGIC CASTLE The Magic Castle Aquarium is small enough to hold in your hand, but large enough to provide shelter for a village of sea-monkeys. It all starts with a packet of dehydrated sea-monkey eggs. Once a home has been prepared, stir in the eggs and watch them hatch right before your eyes. Their home is actually an underwater castle at the base of a clear container to which you add pure bottled or boiled water. Air holes at the rim of the container keep the water oxygenated. The set also comes with a water purifier, sea-monkey food, Amazing Plasma III (no one knows quite what that is), a measuring spoon, a large droplet for agitating the water, a magnifying lid, and more.
