Childhood Maureen Johnson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 16th February 1973. She is an only child. After liking archaeology and astronomy she decided she wanted to be a writer when she was around 8 years old. Although she is not Catholic, she attended an all girls, Catholic Preparatory High School.
Career
Best Books: 13 Little Blue Envelopes was published in 2005 and has won 2 awards. Ginny follows directions from her dead aunt’s 13 letters and meets lots of people on the way. Great story of Ginny’s first travels. Devilish was published in 2006 and has won one award. Ally is clueless and badly in need of Jane’s help. This book is about a hellish high school experience and the battles teens have to face at school.
After completing high school, she went to the University of Delaware as a writing major. She then went to New York where she studied writing and theatrical dramaturgy at Columbia University. During her school years she had many weird and wonderful to pay for university. These jobs include being a fake employee to make it look like more people worked there than actually did, working on a show in Las Vegas that had live tigers and malfunctioning smoke machines and she was an editor.
Writing Before Maureen starts a book, she creates a rough sketch of how the book will go however, this usually gets thrown out once she starts writing.
10 Hs She then writes herself lots of note cards with possible ideas for the book. From her notes she writes different parts of the book in any random order.
Books & Awards Maureen Johnson has written nine books since first being published in 2004. These include The Bermudez Triangle, the Suite Scarlett series and the ever popular 13 Little Blue Envelopes and its sequel The Last Little Blue Envelope. She has won numerous awards for her books including 5 ALA Best Books for Young Adults.
Trivia & Facts In 2009, she won Mashable’s “Most Interesting Twitter User to follow”; she says she lives on Twitter. She used to work in a haunted house themed restaurant. She was scriptwriter for the Harry potter and the Half-Blood Prince video games on Nintendo DS and PSP. During the 23rd-24th of February 2011 she led the Twitter campaign to raise money through ShelterBox for the Christchurch Earthquakes; they raised over $15,000. She lives in New York but frequently travels to the UK. She is 38 years old.
