café@thelibrary Opens In keeping pace with the demand of library patrons, the Cybernook was renovated and converted into a more advanced, functional, and liberal Cyber café. It can be remembered that the Cybernook (constructed in 1995), being one of the firsts in the country, has, for quite a long time, been the pride of the DLSU Library. However, as more and more libraries in the Philippines put up their different and more modern versions of the Cybernook, it has lost its grandeur. Hence the need to reinvent it is deemed necessary and timely as libraries of today continue to evolve into a place where the latest technology and modern conveniences meet. The café@thelibrary opened on June 15, 2010 with the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf as its concessionaire. Equipped with 45 units of work stations, patrons may choose to sit or stand while surfing the Net or laze around the elevated corner especially designed for laptop users. A lounging area for those who would just want to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea or eat a slice of cake while reading the newspaper is also provided. It is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. On the average, the café accommodates 74.46 customers per hour which is 738.69% higher than the number of Cybernook users in the past. This is a positive indication that the Library has

The cafe@thelibrary and its various facets succeeded in its effort to attract more patrons to visit the Library more often so as to maximize the use of its resources, facilities and services.

A Comparative Study of Websites of Selected Colleges and Universities in Manila by Julieta F. Olivar and Karen Cecille C. Victoria For quite a long time, librarians have been contented rendering library services the traditional way. However, with the rapidly changing technology being experienced nowadays, librarians are faced with the challenge to adapt to such changes in response to clients needs and demands. Despite the availability of authoritative information being susbcribed to or purchased by libraries, the number of students, instructors, and professional researchers who use Google and other search engines in their intellectual endeavors gets undeniably higher everyday. This is where a good design for library website plays a very important role. One of the indicators of a well-designed site is the extent of its content; that is, its comprehensiveness and completeness, which speaks loudly of a library’s ability to provide accurate and up to date information. The De La Salle University Library is one of the very first libraries in the Philippines who went online in the 1990s. As the DLSU Library endeavors to make its website as comprehensive as possible, it is deemed necessary to evaluate its website and compare it with those of other libraries as well. Objectives This study aimed to: 1. Compare the webpage content of selected colleges and universities in Manila adapting the 77-item checklist used by Qutab and Mahmood (2009) broken down into the following categories: a. Accessibility and speed b. Navigation c. Currency d. Website aids and tools e. Library general information f. Library resources g. Library services and technical services h. Electronic links i. Language j. Value-added services

Library websites of selected universities and colleges in Manila

2. Determine which of these categories is/ are the most/least supported by the colleges and universities. 3. Identify which among the universities and colleges have the most comprehensive webpage. 4. Provide recommendations on how the DLSU Library can better improve its library homepage making it as comprehensive as possible.

Scope and Limitation Library websites of selected twenty (20) institutions were examined between November-December 2009. Hence changes made on the selected sites after the stated duration were no longer considered. In cases wherein institutions have satellite campuses and libraries, only the websites of the main campus libraries were considered.

Significance of the Study Results of the study may contribute in the improvement of websites, not only of those involved in the study but other educational institutions as well, who want to increase and efficiently carry out their libraries’ services.

Methodology To come up with the list of library websites to be evaluated, the list of existing colleges and universities in Manila found in http://hubpages.com/hub/list-of-collegesand-university-in-manila was consulted.

A Comparative Study of…from page 2 Other institutions not included in the list but were regarded to be one of the major educational institutions in Manila and perceived to significantly contribute to the study were also included. One by one, home pages of these institutions were searched to verify if the pages really exist. Web pages with only short paragraphs or few words about the library were disregarded. Finally, the list of institutions was further narrowed down by ensuring that websites of schools being compared have basically the same set of clienteles. The final list of institutions evaluated were: o Adamson University (AdU) o Assumption College (AC) o Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) o Centro Escolar University (CEU) o Collegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) o De La Salle - College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB) o De La Salle University (DLSU) o Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) o Jose Rizal University (JRU) o Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) o Miriam College (MC) o Philippine Christian University

(PCU) o Philippine Normal University (PNU) o Philippine Women’s University (PWU) o St. Scholastica’s College (SSC) o Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) o University of Sto. Tomas (UST) o University of the East (UE) o University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) o University of the Philippines- Diliman (UP-D). A 77-item checklist used by Qutab and Mahmood (2009) in examining a library’s website content was utilized for the study. Modifications were made by deleting thirteen (13) items from the original list which the researchers thought were redundant. The checklist is divided into various categories: o Accessibility and speed o Navigation o Currency o Website aids and tools o Library general information o Library resources o Library services and technical services

o Electronic links o Language o Value-added services At the end of the survey, the number of items gained by each of the institutions was summed up to determine which of the webpages were considered to be most/least comprehensive. Summary of Findings Results of the study revealed the following: 1. Sixteen (16) out of the 20 institutions or 80% of the websites were accessible within 8 seconds. See Table 1 below. 2. Ninety percent (90%) of the library websites have page titles on top of the window bars. See Table 3 on page 6. 3. Only 20% of the institutions’ websites being evaluated provided both copyright date and date the page was last updated. See Table 4 on page 6. 4. DLSU supports all items under the website aids and tools category such as: (1) library website feedback facility or the webmaster link; (2) website search, which allows users to search within the domain; (3) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs); and, (4) website index or site map. See Table 4 on page 6.

Bongalos Gives Response on behalf of the 2010 CAP Service Awardees Florbella S. Bongalos, popularly known as “Gabi,” delivered her response on behalf of the 2010 Co-Academic Personnel (CAP) service awardees. Below is the transcript of Gabi’s response intimating her gratefulness for being part of the DLSU family.

I thought this was a wonderful way of depicting what nature can do, and comparing it to how a man can be transformed to a higher being in the face of adversity and any of the one thousand and one irritants that may come our way.

Greetings! …

Just as the beautiful pearl is produced from an irritant, so can a man grow into a beautiful creature of God, in spite of the disappointments, and of any difficulties one can think of.

Today, I represent our Co-Academic Personnel who have worked for De La Salle University from 10 to 45 years. I belong to the thirty-year awardees. Thirty years seem such a long long time, and I have the grey hair to show for it, but I think that for a change, I shall try to be a little bit more philosophical about this service award. The thirtieth anniversary is also called the pearl anniversary. Researcher, archival assistant and librarian that I am, I thought I would do a little googling and refresh my memory on how a pearl is made. I hope this does not make you hungrier, but pearls come from oysters. Oysters have a mantle, which produces the shiny inner part of the oyster shell called the nacre. When an irritant, like maybe a grain of sand

This is not to say that thirty years of service in De La Salle has been irritating. There are much much more happy times than sad, and perhaps because of the nature of my job, it was simply steady.

Gabi poses in front of the giant St. La Salle image or a very small piece of coral gets inside the oyster shell, the mantle immediately spins layers and layers of nacre around the irritant until a beautiful pearl is formed. The pearl is usually white in color, but there are black ones, found mainly in the South Pacific, and grey ones, and pink ones.

It culminated in producing a person rich in experience, clothed with the values of St. John Baptist de La Salle, and grateful for the blessings life has dealt her, and maybe, just maybe, if you will agree with me, more beautiful than she ever thought she would be. It has been a luminously pearl of a time, and I am so proud to have been part of De La Salle University for 30 years. Thank you.

DLSU Librarians Participate in AUDRN 2010 Ms. Annabelle Aliwalas and Mr. Joseph Yap were two of the selected participants from all over the country invited to attend a four-day workshopseminar on Sharing Culture and ServiceLearning through Digital Tools held in Miriam College on June 22-25, 2010. Said workshop-seminar was sponsored by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia and the Asian University Digital Resource Network in cooperation with the Miriam College Lifelong Education and Development Center. The workshop focused on the different Web 2.0 best practices for local

knowledge. As such, participants were provided the opportunity to share Web 2.0 initiatives that their respective institutions are currently embarking on. Likewise, the resource speakers gave detailed discussions on the different powerful tools that Web 2.0 offers. Part of the workshop is an encounter with the Miriam College students where a discussion on service learning took place. A guided tour of Intramuros culminated the activity with Mr. Carlos Celdran facilitating the tour.

Abrigo Presents Paper at the JTS 2010 in Norway by Ms. Christine Abrigo, Collection Development Librarian The JTS Oslo 2010 The Joint Technical Symposium (JTS) is an international meeting of audiovisual, cinema and sound heritage experts, involved in the preservation and restoration of original sound and image materials. The Symposium which happens every three years, was first organized in 1983 under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations (CCAAA). Organized by the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) for the CCAAA, The Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) and The National Library of Norway (Nasjonalbiblioteket), JTS met for the eighth time, this year, in Oslo, Norway, with Mr. Asbjorn Inge Straumfors of the Nasjonalbiblioteket and Ms. Lise Gustavson of the NFI serving as local organizers. Mr. Thomas Christensen of the FIAF, on the other hand, was in charge of the symposium's content and also chaired the FIAF Technical Commission. The Programme JTS 2010 was one of the major activities lined up in line with the 66th FIAF Congress in Oslo. It was held on 0305 May 2010 at the historic Klingenberg Cinema, located at the town center. FIAF president Mr. Hisashi Okajima officially opened JTS 2010 on May 3rd, who, in his opening remarks, expressed how pleased he was that the symposium will be graced by "more than 30 brilliant archivists, technologists and scientists from all over the world: Nordic and European countries, USA; but also from the Philippines, China and Japan." The lecture-event was a wellattended gathering, with close to three hundred (300) participants who are experts in the fields of film, video, and sound,

who took part in and benefitted from the plenary lectures of twenty seven (27) paper presenters, coming from Asia, Europe, and the USA. Participants and speakers alike were engaged in vital discussions after every lecture and during a thirty-minute

on the Web. They compared one and the same video published on two different French websites and demonstrated the discrepancies and significance in terms of preserving the original document's context. Jorgen Stensland likewise presented a notable endeavor where Film & Kino Norway has launched their non-commercial complete national digital roll out– Norway being the first country in the world to have boldly pulled it off. The project will convert all of Norway's big and small cinemas into modern DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives)compliant digital cinema houses. Details of the process were tackled on their presentation. Perhaps the one I found most interesting, as it is very much close to the paper I presented and to my AV experience, was the presentation put forth by Paolo Cherchi Usai of the Haghefilm Foundation based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. His discussion o n Te a c h i n g D i g i t a l Preservation touched on the worlds of what he called the triad: the archives, the academia and the laboratory. The Besa’s Formally Turnover the Doreen Gamboa Fernandez Collection to the DLSU Library More than 2000 volumes of books collected by the famous essayist and editor, Doreen Gamboa Fernandez, who passed away in 2002, were formally turned over to the DLSU Library on June 28, 2010 by Mr. Gabriel G. Besa (Doreen’s nephew to who inherited her book collection on Philippine literature, history and theatre). The collection which showcases Filipinana titles in English includes works of award-winning authors, such as Virgilio Almario, Jose Y. Dalisay, Jr., Cirilo F. Bautista, Ruth Elynia S. Mabanglo, and Edilberto N. Alegre, to name a few. The short but meaningful ceremony was highlighted by the remarks of circumstance delivered by Mrs. Della G. Besa, sister of the late Doreen Fernandez. Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC, the then President and Chancellor of DLSU, gave the remarks of acceptance and promised to share the collection to the public. Also present during the occassion were friends and relatives of the Besa’s and librarians of the DLSU Library

A Comparative Study … from page 7 4. Some libraries have not yet arrived at the realization that it is highly important for the clients to have direct access to the library’s OPAC through the Internet. 5. Only a handful of libraries seem to believe that there is a need for the customers to know how books are organized. 6. Providing links to subscribed and open access databases seem to be of high importance to libraries. 7. Libraries apply Web 2.0 technology as such seems to attract more customers. 8. Posting vacancies on the webpage is not a common practice among libraries. 9. The DLSU library webpage, is a lot better compared to other library webpages. Recommendations Based on the results of the study, the following are being recommended:

1. Libraries should benchmark with other libraries’ websites to gain new ideas on how to make better their own homepages. 2. Libraries should consider improving their webpage content by providing more information about their collection, resources, services and facilities. In addition, they should think about including videos and other multimedia presentations showcasing the library and other library events, aside from the usual pictures and graphics. 3. Libraries should collaborate with information technology experts and other stakeholders when designing library websites so that they may have a wider perspective of what needs to be included and to meet the clients’ expectations. 4. Further enhance and develop the DLSU Library’s webpage taking into consideration items in the checklist that are currently not

supported. References Diaz, K. (1998), "The role of the library website: a step beyond deli sandwiches", Reference & User Services Quarterly, Vol. 38 pp.41-3. Kaur, Kiran (2009). Abrigo presents paper ... from page 5 by the Mayor. Likewise, a welcome party was held on the evening of May 2nd at The National Library to formally open the event. The Paper Presentation The call for papers was announced at the JTS 2010 website in mid-2009 and deadlines were set on 01 December 2009 and 01 February 2010, respectively.

Proposals on any aspect on media archiving were welcomed, hence I heeded the call. My paper entitled “Audio-visual Preservation: A Perpetual Dilemma Among Selected Philippine Academic Libraries”, was accepted and was scheduled for presentation on the second symposium day, May 4th. The presentation made quite an impact as it invited interesting questions from the audience. The organizers were

very supportive through and through. Besides myself, there was another Filipino archivist, who is currently based in Norway, who attended the symposium. My participation to this year's JTS was made possible through the travel grants funded by the FIAF, the government's National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and the De La Salle University.

Library Staff Participate in the Inter-La Salle Employees Sportsfest

Gallo (first row, right) and Frias (top row, right) with other DLSU Team members

Wilfredo Frias, Jr. (third from the left) with the Dart Team, bagging 3rd Place

Two library personnel, namely Wilfredo Frias, Jr. (Reference) and Augusto Gallo (EDC) participated in the InterLa Salle Employees Sportsfest on May 29, 2010 at De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, Ayala Alabang Village, Muntinlupa City. Frias and Gallo were chosen from among the employees of DLSU-Manila to represent the University in darts and chess competition, respectively.

The said sportsfest was participated by eight (8) La Salle schools, namely: De La Salle University, De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde, De La Salle University– Dasmariňas, De La Salle Health Science Institute, De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, La Salle College Antipolo, De La Salle Canlubang, and De La Salle Lipa. These schools competed in basketball, volleyball, table tennis, darts, chess,

triathlon, and minor games like patintero, tug-of-war and touch-ball. The Sportsfest, though a friendly one, was very competitive since the different La Salle schools fielded former varsity players who are now employed as coaches in different sports. Frias and his team bagged 3rd place in dart, while the whole De La Salle University–Manila team was declared as the overall champion of the Sportsfest.
