M.F.A. in Production Design The beautifully staged world of Anna Karenina. Lost at sea with a tiger at your tail in Life of Pi. Surviving in the dangerous future of Pacific Rim. Partying hard in the opulence of The Great Gatsby. To losing yourself down a rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland.

Production Design involves creating settings

and styles- whether based in reality or fantasyto establish the specific aesthetic of a feature film, television show, or even a commercial. The Production Designer creates the physical and visual world of a film. In collaboration with his/her associates, the production designer guides such crafts as, for example: Set décor, visual effects, special effects, & costume design, to establish a unified look and feel to visually tell the story.

If production design is your dream, creating a world entirely of its own for a film, Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts is your place for getting the hands-on education you need to break into this challenging field. Both the practical and aesthetic experience of designing for film is emphasized in an intensive two-year program. Course work such as: Set Design & Decoration, Computer Generated Imagery, Storyboarding & set illustration, ultimately bringing it all together in designing several realized thesis films of your own. But you won’t work alone. You will be forming creative teams with your fellow students- screenwriters, directors, producers, cinematographers, sound and visual editors- all coming together to realize a unified vision. In addition to designing actualized films, in class you will expound flights of fancy designing worlds unto themselves for yet unrealized tales for the silver screen.

By the close of your two years of study, you’ll have amassed a solid Portfolio of Production Designs to showcase your talent and perform as your personal calling card to the film and television industry here in Southern California.
