MIFUR 2013 2013/2014 Trends Nature and artifice, tradition and future, confronting each other to find new balances for next winter’s trends. For next Autumn/Winter 2013/2014, three trends will be making an appearance at the International Fur and Leather Exhibition from the studio of IFTF – the International Fur Trade Federation: New Naturalist, Modern Vintage, and Galactic. The next winter season’s furs and silhouettes play a game of overlapping, leaving room for many different ways of interpreting how fur can be worn. There are plenty of must-have items, like the waistcoat-effect fastened fur, whose sartorial version is shaping up to be the hottest look for next winter. The important thing is to have fun! Which means lengths can be played with to produce ultramodern asymmetrical lines or more daring looks with rounded, compressed or puffed shoulders, with a strong retro feel. Silhouettes for overcoats are extra-short or long with meticulously crafted inserts and tapering.

NEW NATURALIST To offset the frenetic pace of modern life, this trend pays tribute to the earth and is deeply rooted in Mother Nature’s harmonious equilibrium. Nature becomes the point of reference in our search for healthy, informed balance in our lives. In contrast with hyper-saturated fast fashion, a desire for things endowed with more meaning, and that last longer and offer a sense of nostalgia emerges: cocooning yourself in what’s familiar and comfortable, as well as embracing the concept of authentic roots. It means appreciating organic and/or natural items and environmentally sustainable products and systems. Inspired by “Arte Povera”, the New Naturalist trend comprises a kind of anti-trend. A minimalist country look – with traditional tweeds and thickly woven knitwear coupled with heavy mélange jersey, while the soft feel of fur adds an element of ultra-luxury to everyday comfort. Colours – almost as if rising up from under the ground, we find wood brown and musk green paired with a neutral gravel colour and a cloud grey, while the blue/black shade and burnt chocolate add a dark mysterious intensity to the palette.

MODERN VINTAGE On the heels of the previous season’s “Ladylike Kitsch”, this new trend is serenely glamorous with a very elegant look. It is inspired by the Haute Couture fashion houses of the Forties and Fifties, and by the revolutionary break with past triggered by Christian Dior’s New Look collection in 1947 that celebrated femininity with flared skirts and slim waists. Precious fabrics, impeccable finishes and exquisite details all take centre stage, reinventing the most classic luxury in a modern way. Retro tapering, together with a sense of emphatic minimalism, is combined with gentleness and extremely sensual affection, and the results are very contemporary. As far as lines are concerned, the trend puts emphasis on the return of classic shapes, but remodernised with more functional, contemporary proportions that nonetheless remain exquisitely delicate, reflecting understated elegance and tenderly feminine glamour. Colours – the palette oozes sensual luxury, with a neutral champagne or a buttery camel shade that contrasts with a perfumed pink and a Parma violet colour that fizzes with freshness next to a tobacco brown or a smoky seagull grey. Marine blue rounds off the palette, adding a touch of classic elegance. GALACTIC In a galaxy far, far away, there’s a futuristic world that blends history and culture to create a new hybrid fashion: a galactic warrior princess. With a nod to cinema epics like Star Wars and Blade Runner, this universal cultural clash sees Oriental opulence juxtaposed with the seductive glamour of the Forties. Contrasting with the hightech excesses, we find the more natural, inspiring forms of modernism that recall Antoni Gaudì and at the same time an acute sense of geometry, with Oriental decadence giving rise to a new futurist spirit. The inspirations for the silhouettes are real stage costumes: wrapping, draping and layering are the key words, contrasting with clean and contemporary lines. Colours – the galactic influence inspires a range of rich mixes in mineral tones with domeykite grey. Burnt bronze and dark sphalerite prepare the scene for an explosion of neutral fumé colours and for a smoking oxide red. An ultraviolet peroxide adds an element of the supernatural to this epic colour palette which brings together air and earth, light and shade, and the ancient and the futuristic.
