MODULE E - TEST PRACTICE 1 Part I: Access to Information from Written Texts (70 points) Read the article below and then answer questions 1-6.
THE FILM INDUSTRY 1
Southern California has been the movie capital of the world for years. The main attractions were its beaches, deserts, mountains, diverse landscape. However, the cost of filming in the Los Angeles area has increased so drastically that many filmmakers are fleeing the region to make their runaway films elsewhere. It appears that New Zealand has become a favorite destination. A native of the country himself, Peter Jackson filmed the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in his own backyard.
Filmmakers prefer the island of New Zealand, thanks to its diverse climate and landscape which consists of beaches, green mountains, valleys, snow in winter 10 and green in the summer. The fact that the New Zealand government subsidizes the cost of filming may have something to do with it as well. Until recently, the New Zealand economy was entirely dependent upon agricultural exports to the UK. However, the UK’s entrance into a European Trade Union in the 1970’s limited the amount of crops that could be sold to there. 15 With blockbusters such as The Lord of the Rings, The Last Samurai and Perfect Strangers which were filmed in New Zealand, the local market is trying to maximize profits from the entertainment industry. Tourism is also on the rise in New Zealand. NZ.com, the commercial and travel website for New Zealand, is offering special tours to the islands to see the various locations where Peter 20 Jackson’s trilogy was filmed. Can more major motion pictures be attracted to this majestic island? If so, it would have a disastrous effect on the Californian economy, from which it might not be able to recover fully. Vancouver, Toronto and even Atlanta are also stealing some of California’s revenues. In addition to lost revenue from the 25 relocation of the film industry, local tourism is also affected. Perhaps people in Los Angeles should not take the film industry for granted. It is imperative that California retain the film industry and put an end to runaway movies. This is a key to boosting its economy. Every effort should be made to keep movies in California; otherwise the people of California may end up as financial losers.
