MPM1D Course Outline Mr. Matthew

Room 45 www.mrchapman.org

Math at the grade nine level will build on skills acquired in the elementary grades and give you the tools required to conduct yourself confidently in a numerical world. A firm foundation in mathematics prepares you for further education, the world of work and daily life. Beyond the immediate practicality, it also offers a chance for logic and reason to develop, training areas of the brain that will help you make sound judgements in every area of your life. The recipe for success:  Use your agenda every day for everything school related  Do your homework diligently  Apply new knowledge to games, group activities and real life scenarios  Learn where to find ‘food’: Grocery Shopping 101  Ask questions when you don’t understand  Find out what was missed from a classmate if you were absent & catch up  Attend tutorials either with Mr. Matthew, another math teacher, or outside school Grocery Shopping The teacher is not the only source of information and will not be there to spoon-feed you when you are doing homework and during tests. Therefore, it is important (for this class and for life in general), that students begin learning to ‘feed’ themselves. There are several ‘aisles’ of the ‘grocery store’ in which you will find different types of food. Course materials (textbook, notes, handouts) should always be your first option. Peers are also an excellent source of nourishment & you will be placed in small groups where you can more effectively take advantage of this aisle. At home, explanations of complicated language in your course materials can be asked of your family members or family friends - delicious! While in class or during tutorials, the teacher is always an excellent source of Vitamin I (information), but cannot be your only source – a balanced diet is key! Lastly, the internet, including links Mr. Matthew has posted on his website, can serve as a veritable smorgasbord for a malnourished mathematician.

Term Work:

Absence/Late Policies For work missed, exchange phone numbers and contact your class buddy while you are away to catch up as soon as possible. Pulling your weight in group work and catching up on missed work is your responsibility. Without a medical note or prior arrangements made, an absence on an assessment date will result in a 0 for that assessment (quiz/test/exam). To help offset this, the lowest of your quiz marks will be dropped when calculating each end of unit grade. All assignments are to be handed in ON TIME.  Extensions may be granted on an individual basis but must be discussed with the teacher prior to the assignment due date. Late work will be accepted but will face a penalty of 5% per day. If an assignment is submitted after marked papers have been returned to the class, the student will receive a mark of zero (0) for the missed work. Required Materials

• Mathematics 9 Addison Wesley Textbook (sign out from book room in squash building) • 2-ringed binder containing a lined workbook, a graphing workbook & loose leaf paper • Pencils and erasers (spares are a necessity) • Scientific calculator • Geometry set (rulers, protractor, compass, etc) Tutorials Regular tutorials will be held at lunch hour. Check outside Room 45 for the posted schedule. Parents Parents can help immensely in their student’s development by checking their agenda frequently for assigned homework, upcoming tests and other news. There will rarely be a day without homework as the course moves quickly through a lot of material. It is important that students are held accountable both at home and at school.
