Texto Completo BVSSPA (http://wa2jp9pc9c.search.serialssolutions.com?url_ver=Z39.88 2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Ajournal&rft.genre=article&rft.jtitle=British%20Journal%20of%20Dermatology&rft.atitle=Nail%20diseases%20 0201&rft.issn=00070963&rft.eissn=13652133&rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Fwiley.com%3AOnlineLibrary) SIR, Nail diseases in patients having periodic haemodialysis (HD) for uraemia are common and may affect 71·4% of patients.1 The most frequent onychopathy is half and half nails (HHN), whose aetiology is unknown.2 Absence of lunula (AL) is commonly observed in patients having HD for chronic renal failure, and may be related to anaemia which is frequent in this group of patients.3,4 Less frequent are brittle nails, which may occur secondary to hypochromic anaemia and chronic disease such as chronic renal failure.5 There are no studies comparing the presence of nail diseases in healthy people with those on HD. In the present study, we analysed nail changes in a series of 114 patients on HD and compared them with a control group of 133 randomly selected healthy people, and also investigated their relationship with biochemical parameters. The causes of renal failure, types of membranes, buffer solutions used, and laboratory investigations performed in the patient group have been published elsewhere.6 Physical examination was used to establish the diagnosis. The presence of the most common nail diseases in HD patients, namely HHN, brittle nails and AL were investigated. Statistical methods were similar to previous studies.6 The characteristics of the patients and control group, and the prevalence of nail disease in the two groups, are summarized in Table 1.
