Tempest-Tossed

The Spirit of Isabella Beecher Hooker susan campbell First full-length biography of a key figure in nineteenth-century American culture

Tempest-Tossed is the first full biography of the fascinating other daughter of the “Fabulous Beecher” family, which included older sister Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Isabella Beecher Hooker, “a curiously modern nineteenth-century figure,” was a suffragist and could be charming and off-putting. In her latest book, author Susan Campbell brings a unique blend of empathy and humor to the story of Harriet’s half-sister. “For Isabella Beecher Hooker it was both a blessing and a curse to be born into of one of the most famous families in America. Just when she discovered her own calling in the women’s rights movement, she found herself embroiled in the biggest sex scandal of the 19th century, the trial of her brother for adultery. Susan Campbell has brought Isabella’s fascinating, forgotten story back to life with the deep research of a born historian and the vibrant, readable prosestyle of a veteran journalist.” Debby Applegate, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher “With a journalist’s concision and eye for the vivid quote, Susan Campbell captures Isabella Beecher Hooker’s quirky temperament and her passion for women’s rights. This wry and personal narrative is deeply informed, balanced, and a delight to read.” Joan Hedrick, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Biography for Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Life

The British Raid on Essex

The Forgotten Battle of the War of 1812 jerry roberts The untold story of the burning of American privateers in Connecticut

This is the dynamic account of one of the most destructive maritime actions to take place in Connecticut history: the 1814 British attack on the shipping of Pettipaug Point, known today as the British Raid on Essex. During the height of the War of 1812, 136 Royal marines and sailors made their way up the Connecticut River from warships anchored in Long Island Sound. Guided by a well-paid American traitor, the British navigated the Saybrook shoals and advanced up the river under cover of darkness. By the time it was over, the British had burned twenty-seven American ships, including six newly built privateers. It was the largest single maritime loss of the war. Yet this story has been virtually left out of the history books—the forgotten battle of the forgotten war. This new account from author and historian Jerry Roberts is the definitive overview of this event and includes a wealth of new information drawn from recent research and archaeological finds. Lavish illustrations and detailed maps bring the battle to life. “In this dynamic account of the British attack on American privateers in the Connecticut River, Roberts combines new research on both sides of the Atlantic to at last restore this untold story to its rightful place in history ensuring that the forgotten battle of the War of 1812 will long be remembered.” Roy Manstan, author of Turtle: David Bushnell’s Revolutionary Vessel

jerry roberts is the battlefield historian for a National Parks Service grant project charged with researching the British raid on Essex shipping in 1814. From 2006 to 2013, he was executive director of the Connecticut River Museum. He lives in Essex, Connecticut.

Gerald Vizenor weaves an engrossing historical portrayal of Native American soldiers in World War I. Blue Ravens begins in the days leading up to the Great War and continues in combat scenes at Château-Thierry, Montbréhain, and Bois de Fays. After serving in the American Expeditionary Forces, two brothers from the Anishinaabe culture return to the White Earth Reservation where they grew up, and eventually leave for a second time to live in Paris where they lead successful and creative lives. With a spirited sense of “chance, totemic connections, and the tricky stories of our natural transience in the world,” Vizenor creates an expression of presence commonly denied Native Americans. The novel contains many of Vizenor’s recurrent cultural themes—the power and irony of trickster stories, the privilege of survivance over victimry, natural reason and resistance. Blue Ravens is a story of courage in poverty and war from a recognized master of the postwar American novel and one of the most original and outspoken Native voices writing today. An online reader’s companion will be available. “In all of Vizenor’s extensive oeuvre, I know of no richer, deeper, and more intensely rendered book, ironies notwithstanding, than Blue Ravens. This is powerful work by a master at the very height of his form.” Arnold Krupat, professor emeritus, Sarah Lawrence College

Producing Country

The Inside Story of the Great Recordings michael jarrett Legendary producers describe the making of country music’s great recordings

Musicians make music. Producers make records. In the early days of recorded music, the producer was the “artistsand-repertoire man.” A powerful figure, the “A&R man” chose both who would record and what would be recorded. Don Law found country bluesman Robert Johnson and honky-tonk crooner Lefty Frizzell. Cowboy Jack Clement took the initiative to record Jerry Lee Lewis. The author’s extensive interviews with music makers offer the fullest account ever of the producer’s role in creating country music. Producing Country tells the story of country music from its early years to the present day through hit records by Bill Monroe, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Lyle Lovett, and others. Includes original interviews with producers Chet Atkins, Pete Anderson, Jimmy Bowen, Bobby Braddock, Harold Bradley, Tony Brown, Blake Chancey, Jack Clement, Scott Hendricks, Bob Johnston, Jerry Kennedy, Blake Mevis, Ken Nelson, Jim Ed Norman, Allen Reynolds, Jim Rooney, James Stroud, Paul Worley, and Buddy Killen, among others. “This is a very readable and informative oral history of the evolution of country music recording. Few books have delved into the role that record producers have played in country music, and fewer still have allowed the record producers themselves to talk about the nuances of their recording processes in such revealing and fascinating detail.” Paul Kingsbury, editor of The Encyclopedia of Country Music

michael jarrett is a professor of English at Penn State University, York. He is the author of Drifting on a Read: Jazz as a Model for Writing and Sound Tracks: A Musical ABC.

When Prudence Crandall tried to integrate her Canterbury, Connecticut school in the 1830s she was arrested, jailed, and thrust in the national spotlight. The Connecticut state legislature passed its infamous Black Law in an attempt to close down her school. Crandall’s legal legacy had a lasting impact—Crandall v. State was the first full-throated civil rights case in U.S. history. The arguments by attorneys in Crandall played a role in two of the most fateful Supreme Court decisions, Dred Scott v. Sandford, and the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education. In Prudence Crandall’s Legacy, author Donald E. Williams Jr. marshals a wealth of detail concerning the life and work of Prudence Crandall, her unique role in the fight for civil rights, and her influence on legal arguments for equality in America. “A compelling and lively look at the long struggle for black equality in America. Taking readers from Connecticut schoolrooms to the highest court in the land, he gives us heroes and villains, triumph and tragedy, equity and injustice on the rough road to full freedom. Williams reminds readers that abolitionism was America’s first civil rights movement and that race reformers like Prudence Crandall struggled mightily to overcome prejudice in the North as well as South.” Richard S. Newman, author of Freedom’s Prophet “Donald Williams has authored what will become the authoritative history of Prudence Crandall and her controversial academy. Through a carefully researched narrative, Williams richly intertwines Crandall with other key protagonists of the struggle for abolition and black equality to show how Crandall’s courageous stand in Canterbury and her persisting dedication to conscience and human freedom helped shape the struggle for black equality into the Civil War and beyond.” Peter P. Hinks, author of To Awaken My Afflicted Brethren

In Defense of Nothing

Selected Poems, 1987–2011 peter gizzi

A new lyricism for the twenty-first century

Since his celebrated first book of poetry, Peter Gizzi has been hailed as one of the most significant and distinctive voices writing today. Gathered from five collections, and representing close to twenty-five years of work, the poems in this generous selection strike a dynamic balance of honesty, emotion, intellectual depth, and otherworldly resonance—in Gizzi’s work, poetry itself becomes a primary ground of human experience. Haunted, vibrant, and saturated with luminous detail, Gizzi’s poetry enlists the American vernacular in a magical and complex music. In Defense of Nothing is an immensely valuable introduction to the work of this extraordinary and singular poet. An online reader’s companion will be available. “Peter Gizzi’s poetry at once captures the deadening, and the standardization of our culture and wakes us up, makes us ‘silly with clarity.’ Through his poetry we become almost painfully attuned to the present. He can name with precision our medicated, mediated insensibility and then startle us out of anesthesia with the beauty of his singing. Gizzi can move from the ghostly, flickering edge of perceptibility to focused intensity at disorienting, Dickinsonian speed. His poetry is an example of how a poet’s total, tonal attention can disclose orders of sensation and meaning. His beautiful lines are full of deft archival allusion, and his influences range from Simonides to Schuyler, but those voices, those prosodies, aren’t ever decorative; Gizzi is gathering from the air a live tradition.” Ben Lerner

peter gizzi is the author of Threshold Songs, The Outernationale, Some Values of Landscape and Weather, Artificial Heart, and Periplum. He teaches at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

brenda coultas A documentary elegy for the end of a pristine natural world

A collection of original haiku from a preeminent Native American poet and novelist

Favor of Crows is a collection of new and previously published original haiku poems, written over the past forty years. Gerald Vizenor has earned a wide and devoted audience for his poetry. Vizenor creates a union of vision, perception, and natural motion in concise poems; he creates a sense of presence and at the same time a naturalistic trace of impermanence. An online reader’s companion will be available. “Joining the traditions of Japanese haiku and Chippewa dream songs, Vizenor has created a memorable book of one-breath nature poetry in which ordinary moments come to shimmering life on the page.” David G. This beautiful new book gathers the debris of our living, sifting through the midden piles to uncover the made world at the center of a hornets’ nest or a human anatomy book. Coultas’s seamless weave of sentences shows us the tatters at the heart of living, and the full glory of our assemblages. These poems enable us to be present with the sorrow and horror of our destructive nature, and to honor the natural world while acknowledging that this world no longer exists in any pure form. An online reader’s companion will be available. “In this ethical testimony, occurring at the boundary between the remains and the living, Coultas shows us the only thing that will keep us going: how to share this world.” Eleni Sikelianos, author of The Loving Detail of the Living & the Dead

Things Come On

Live from the Homesick Jamboree

An amneoir joseph harrington

adrian blevins

now in paperback

National and family disasters converge in this radically new kind of memoir

Molten and musical poetry from an acclaimed Southern writer

Things Come On combines poetry and other elements to weave a narrative around the concurrence of the Watergate scandal and the dates of the poet’s mother’s illness and death from breast cancer. The language of illness and of political cover-up powerfully resonate with one another; this haunting experimental biography challenges our assumptions about the distance between individual experience and history. “Proves once again the inseparability of the personal from the political. . . . Cognitive disarray becomes cognitive dismay—this is the political truth of grief. And with discovery of this truth, Harrington restores dignity and beauty to the personal.” Lyn Hejinian, author of My Life and My Life in the Nineties

This is a brave, brash, funny, and tragic hue and cry on growing up female during the 1970s, moving from adolescence through a dry-eyed, poignant exploration of two marriages, motherhood, and the larger world, with a headlong perceptiveness and brio. Whether listening to Emmylou Harris while thinking she should be memorizing Tolstoy, reflecting on her “full-to-bursting motherliness,” the tensions and lurchings of a relationship, or “the cockamamie lovingness” of it all, the language flies fast and furious. “Cracklingly vernacular, the poems of Adrian Blevins coo and whine…awash in adverbs and adjectives and ands, lending itself to lists that seem to unspool quickly and endlessly, and to include everything. . . . A nutty, nervy poetics of pissed.” Abigail Deutsch, Poetry
