In an effort to retain corporate knowledge, potential DND mentors and mentees are being asked to take part in a new mentoring program. The Director General of Learning and Professional Development (DGLPD) in conjunction with ADM HR-Civ has created a new online database for

While it’s great to recruit new employees, corporate knowledge is walking out the door,” says Lucia Scianname, team leader with DGLPD. “We decided to invite military members to be part of the program because 60 per cent of civil-

Get involved in training workforce From page 1 kick off the program, where potential participants can get a wealth of information and have access to resources, including a mentoring toolkit. An online course is available to anyone thinking of enrolling in the program, and program coordinators recommend participants complete it before signing on. All DND indeterminate employees are eligible to be mentees; they just need their immediate supervisor’s permission to sign up. “This is something civilian employees have been asking about for years and years,” said Patricia Nelson, HR Corporate Advisor for the DGLPD. “We’re really hoping that supervisors and management support this program by allowing their employees time to participate without making them feel they’re falling behind or letting their unit down.”

A mentoring pilot project was conducted across DND between September 2005 and June 2006. With results and recommendations in hand, program coordinators were able to build a sustainable online database capable of matching mentors and mentees based on their learning objectives. For more information about the DND Mentoring Program and to register, visit the website at: http://hr.dwan.dnd.ca/hrciv/dglpd/dlpdps/en/home_e. asp?reference=110530014.

“Right now I’m trying to focus on giving back to my community. As an auxiliary RCMP volunteer in Prince George, I want to make my community a better place in any way I can. Most people look for the community to give to them, but I feel I have a lot to give. This voluntary position usually involves 160 hours a year but I’ve been doing 800 to 1,000 hours for the past four years. And next year, I want to contribute more than ever. I love it.”

“My hopes for the New Year are always for my children. We have a new sonin-law who is in the Navy, so we are always thinking about the young people who work in the military. I hope the economic situation and the situation in the East improves, so that they can have a good future and prosperous life.” Barbara Hendel, friend of LCdr Montgomery’s family

“I’m studying in my first year at UVic taking biochemistry, and finding it extremely challenging. I study all the time. So this year I really want to get good grades. That way I’ll be able to make future decisions on what I want to do.”

“I want to go to sea. I’ve been in the military for 21 years and I love to see the coast and see parts of this province that 95 per cent of the population will never see in their lives. I’d also love to take my family and travel to the interior of B.C. It’s the best place to go.”

Nathaniel Doherty, son of HMCS Edmonton’s executive officer, LCdr Timothy Doherty

PO1 Sean MacUisdin, Coxswain aboard HMCS Edmonton

“My hope for 2009 is not having my dad away for five months like last year. I’d also like to go to Prince Edward Island for the B.C. summer games for sailing. I’ve been sailing at Canadian Forces Sailing Association for the past few months on Saturday mornings. I like it and I like getting wet. I hope to compete to make it to the Olympics in sailing.” Matthew Montgomery, son of LCdr Patrick Montgomery

Jim Marrʼs Morris Minor: One in a million Jim Marr of Moncton, New Brunswick, will never forget his first car – a 1961 Morris Minor One Million, an anniversary model to commemorate the one millionth Minor built since production began in 1948. The actual millionth Morris Minor was completed at the factory on Thursday, December 22, 1960, and was given serial number 1,000,000. It was the first British car to reach this production total. The next 349 Morris Minors were replicas of the original one millionth. All were given a lilac exterior, white leather interior, a silver commemorative plaque on the dash, and bonnet and boot (hood and trunk) badges with the number 1000000 replacing the customary “Minor 1000.” Otherwise, these cars were identical to the regular production twodoor Minors with the 948 cc four-banger under the hood. Of the “Minor One Million” 320 were sold on the British market after being on display in dealers’ showrooms, 21 with lefthand-drive were shipped to

Canada, and the remaining nine (also left-hand-drive) were shipped elsewhere. Jim Marr might have owned the only one in New Brunswick. He bought his in 1966 and drove it over 200,000 miles. The actual millionth car is owned today by someone in Warwickshire, and probably the best preserved (#1,000,257) is the one owned by Bradburn & Wedge Ltd., a garage in Wolverhampton. It shows only 1500 miles on the odometer. The one million Morris Minors built between 1948 and 1961 represent a million stories waiting to be told. Toronto historian Mike Filey’s first car was a 1949 Morris Minor purchased for fifty dollars when the car was ten years old. It had only one option, “a heater, the fan of which was under the passenger seat. Turn the device on and the person sitting beside me would rise two or three inches. The car also had mechanical brakes, a set of flipper directional signals, and a constant aroma of burning oil.”

“One stop shopping with friendly advice.”

Factory photo of 1961 Morris Minor One Million Now almost broke after paying for the car, Mike did manage to scrape together enough money to buy several cans of paint from Canadian Tire for a flashy do-it-yourself paint job. He mixed the paints together to create a unique shade of turquoise. “As it happened the colour turned out okay, but the amount I had to work with wasn’t quite enough. When I reached the trunk area I realized I could never reproduce the colour I had created. What to do? Simple. I went back

to the front of the car and pushed the paint toward the back of the car, hoping to move enough along to cover what was left of the original maroon colour.” As a thank you, if your story is published in this column you will receive a copy of Bill Sherk’s book “60 Years Behind the Wheel: The Cars We Drove in Canada 19001960.” To send stories or photos, email billtsherk@ sympatico.ca or write Bill Sherk, 25 John St., P.O. HMC Ships Yellowknife and Whitehorse departed Esquimalt for Task Group Exercise (TGEX) 03-08 on the morning of Oct. 27 for the warm waters of Southern California. Along with HMC Ships Regina and Winnipeg, these four ships constituted the Canadian component for naval exercises involving the USS John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group and the USS Boxer Expeditionary Group. The transit to California for Yellowknife and Whitehorse was spent preparing for the exercise under the watchful eye of Sea Training Pacific, with both ships conducting assisted work-ups. Several exercises were conducted to hone the crews’ skills in damage control, fire fighting, weapons shoots (.50 calibre heavy machine guns and the 40mm Bofor), man overboard recoveries, replenishments at sea (RAS), search and rescue, as well as a helicopter hoist (Helo Hoist) operations conducted with a Sea King helicopter from 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron. On the afternoon of Nov. 1, Yellowknife and Whitehorse arrived in San Diego to disembark Sea Training personnel and conduct a short port visit. The next morning, Yellowknife embarked Commodore

Nigel Greenwood, the Commander Canadian Pacific Fleet, and Captain (Navy) Gilles Couturier, Commander Maritime Operations Group Four. The two Kingston class vessels then departed San Diego to rendezvous with Regina and Winnipeg to begin TGEX 03-08. The exercise really began for Yellowknife and Whitehorse on the morning of Nov. 4 with a combined .50 calibre HMG surface shoot at inflatable surface targets. Subsequent days were spent conducting force protection scenarios, more gunnery practice and naval intelligence gathering operations in order to develop the recognized maritime picture. With Point Loma sighted in fog on the morning of Nov. 5, Yellowknife and Whitehorse entered San Diego a second time to fuel and grant some shore leave to the crew. San Diego was welcoming to all four vessels with temperatures well into the mid 20’s Celcius. With three of the four ships berthed downtown at Broadway Pier, the crews were provided easy access to several local shops, attractions, beaches and museums. Yellowknife and Whitehorse departed San Diego on the morning of Nov. 10 to begin their role as opposition force (aka, enemy). With both ships correlating and passing contact information to our

Task Group Commander, a common maritime picture was developed and maintained throughout the exercise. This was crucial to the success of the opposition force mission: to harass and probe Stennis and Boxer groups. Several deceptive techniques were used to evade blue forces, with both Kingston Class vessels able to close and harass blue forces to very close ranges. The highlight of the exercise was when Yellowknife and Whitehorse disguised themselves as a tug and tow, evading the escorts, and close the Stennis to within six miles. Watching as the carrier launched and recovered F/A-18 Super Hornets at night was a sight many of the crew will not forget. Once Yellowknife and Whitehorse advertised the carrier battle group’s position to our consorts, we were allowed to become more aggressive towards the USN ships (known as Blue forces). Once blue forces pre-emptively fired upon (and “sank”) HMCS Whitehorse, “weapons free” was ordered, allowing Yellowknife to score several “hits” on Stennis - our high value target, and her missile escorts. Radios were busy with reports of imaginary missiles and gun fire racing across the waters of Southern California. This made for a very exciting day. As a momentary reprieve from the exercises, all Canadian ships took an important pause to reflect and pay remembrance to our fallen comrades. At the eleventh hour on the morning of Nov. 11, the ship’s company mustered on the foc’sle. Once the exercise finished, Yellowknife and Whitehorse were detached for their transit to San Francisco. The entrance to San Francisco was breathtaking; navigating under the Golden Gate Bridge was a first for many. Again, the crew enjoyed California, with trips to Alcatraz Prison, Napa Valley for winery tours, and the Golden Gate Bridge among many other sights. Departing on Nov. 19, all four Canadian ships began the journey north for home. Running at best speed to outrun an approaching winter storm, the ships rounded Race Rocks and proceeded into Esquimalt Harbour, completing the 800 mile trip in a record 51 hours, arriving a day early for some well deserved rest.

Coasts share in MARS training Lt(N) Craig Cook Contributor On Oct. 24, 2008, 16 people from Venture – The Naval Officer Training Centre (NOTC) embarked on the final portion of their MARS training. This culmination of three courses worth of training is known as the six week sea phase to the students. It represents the time when MARS trainees can bring together everything they have learned to that point in an operational environment. Traditionally, the sea phases are conducted in Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs) and alternate between the East and West Coast. The Halifax MARS IV Division sea phase was conducted in her name sake city. This provided quite an adventure for the students as they had, to that point, completed all their training on the West Coast. The sea phase required three MCDVs, which were HMC Ships Glace Bay, Goose Bay, and Summerside. Students

were shown to their accommodations, commonly known as the Pod (an accommodation payload similar to a converted cargo container that sleeps six in rather tight quarters). The sea phase was six weeks of hard training interspersed with port visits including Mayport, FL; New York, NY; and Halifax, NS. The training consisted of navigation passages that included the opportunity to navigate the Cape Cod Canal and the entrance to New York Harbour. In their first two weeks the students completed Officer of the Watch manoeuvres. The Commanding Officers quickly taught them to take the opportunity to drive the ships aggressively whenever they did manoeuvres. The weeks at sea culminated with participation in a 12-day Task Group Exercise. The highlight of the exercise was the ships conducted a Tow Operation with HMCS Toronto and a VERTREP with a Sea King. This provided some excitement for the crew and students.

The monthly cash flow distributions on Fidelity T-SWP™ are not guaranteed, will be adjusted from time to time, and may include income. A return of capital reduces an investor’s adjusted cost base. Capital gains taxes are deferred until units are sold or until the ACB goes below zero. Investors should not confuse this cash flow distribution with a fund’s rate of return or yield. While investors in Series T8/S8 and/or T5/S5 will be able to defer some personal capital gains, they must still pay tax on capital gains distributions that arise from the sale of individual holdings by fund managers, and on interest and dividend distributions. T-SWP will also pay a distribution that must be reinvested in December, consisting of income and capital gains.
