Teaching for IB program

A novel research based teaching & learning method : SLID

SLID versus Traditional approaches

Teaching methods – short overview Methods – There are over 150 teaching methods

① Lecturing

②Demonstration (Laboratory experiments)/Projects ③Assignments ④Literary activities such as drama ⑤Oral presentations ⑥Group discussions/Debates ⑦ One to one discussions 

And many more !!!

Teaching methods Teaching depends upon several factors  Three factors that I observed!! ① Audience ② Purpose ③ Domain 

Audience :: The background of the person you are teaching to

⟫ Teaching a 5 year old kid is entirely different from teaching a University student.

Purpose :: The aim of the teaching program

⟫Teaching for a degree/diploma course (evaluation oriented) is different from a social awareness program (for example against alcohol abuse)

Domain:: The type of course

⟫Teaching Chemistry (an experimental domain) is very different from teaching English vocabulary (a literary domain) 5/18/2015

Teaching: much more than previously thought  

   

A key question :: Why do we teach? To pass the “available knowledge” to the growing generation with maximum efficiency. Another key question :: Must it be teacher centered or student centered? The students must be trained to gain the “remaining knowledge” Then, the Education must be Student oriented And, IB is ONE AMONG THEM!! 5/18/2015

Teaching for IB program  

Motive of International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program? To develop four principal skills needed to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.

Intellectual,  Personal,  Emotional  Social ⟫ IB teachers are equipped to provide these skills 

Teaching for IB program 

Intellectual skills

① Thinking  ② Applying knowledge  ③ Analysis  ④ Drawing conclusion 

7

Teaching for IB program Personal skills ① Effective communication ② Time management ③ Selective ④ Adaptability

8

Teaching for IB program Emotional skills :: this is much more with the teacher than students

①Relationship management: teacher – student ②Self awareness (strengths & weakness) ③Social sensitivity (especially working in an international environment) 5/18/2015

9

Teaching for IB program 

Social skills (working with many) :: Basis of interaction

①Working in a team towards achieving a goal ②Attitude towards others

③Generation of conflicts & solving them

IB – A ladder for your professional career 

An IB Diploma holder :: holder of all these four prime professional attributes equipped to learn and work in the rapidly globalising environment!!

SLID technique A Research based learning/teaching program I propose/develop for the use in the Institutions of higher learning.  What is SLID?  SLID is a Research based learning/teaching technique, with equal emphasis on the four following key attributes.  SEARCH for solution : the learner must be motivated, & there must be a theme to start with  LEARN: specific learning  INVESTIGATION – applying different investigation modes  DISCOVER – Finally, discover something NEW!! 

5/18/2015

12

SLID 

Yes, we all know how one discovers new things!!

So, what is new in this method?

Traditional methods is subject oriented :: for example, physics, chemistry & political science etc.

Whereas SLID is problem based (specific purpose)

No, You didn’t understand!!

5/18/2015

IB conference Dunya School

13

Traditional methods In traditional methods the sequence is Learn – Search/Investigate- Discover ① Learn ⟫particular subjects are being taught ⟫no overlapping of different streams (eg: commerce with science) ②Search & Investigate ⟫ Seeking knowledge & Investigative methods are limited to your stream ③ Discover ⟫ Inventions becomes single dimensional 5/18/2015

An Example 

Take for example a theme!!

So I am motivated & think about a theme:

“Water scarcity in Azerbaijan, & how to overcome it?”

Let us see how we can apply SLID technique to solve the problem!!⤵ 5/18/2015

IB conference Dunya School

15

SLID ① Geography of Azerbaijan – study about its rivers, property of soil. Geography/Soil science. ② Technological aspect (Chemical Engineering) ③Its economical viability (Economics) ④Environmental viability (Environmental science) 5/18/2015

IB conference Dunya School

16

SLID SEARCHING various aspects of a problem ( you defined the problem) Now you have Four INVESTIGATION modes The candidate LEARNS all four aspects. 

Combining all four you get the best solution for the problem

①Geography ② Engineering ③ Economics ④ Environmental 

Yes, it is multi dimensional!!

Let us see how the same problem in the traditional mode of learning 5/18/2015

IB conference Dunya School

17

Traditional Learning Treats the problem independently.  For example, Let us see how one addresses the problem of water scarcity in traditional learning method!! ①study geographically & suggest solution 

② study technologically & suggest solution ③study economically & suggest solution ④ study environmentally & suggest solution 

The overall solution may not be as good as SLID method due to inapplicability of solutions put together!! 5/18/2015

Comparison 

Problem oriented (SLID) :: Subject oriented (Traditional)

Multidisciplinary(SLID) :: Compartmental(Traditional)

Self driven (SLID) :: More teacher/supervisory role (Traditional)

Innovative (SLID) :: Informative (Traditional)

Time consuming(SLID) :: Readymade (Traditional)

SLID in IB curriculum ① SLID can effectively be incorporated into IB curriculum:: mini projects

② It provides an ample opportunity to familiarise with the future research based University Education ③ A golden opportunity for applying those four skills procured during one’s IB course. 5/18/2015
