News from the Tiyimiseleni Orphanage project [November 2013]

Christmas is coming, a time of giving. But what if you are an orphan and have no parents who can give you a Christmas present? Or what if you grow up in such poverty, that your mother cannot even give you a piece of chocolate during the festive days? With the help of Savanna’s dear friends Karen and Doug, we were able to give all 250 children a true Christmas package: chocolates, toys, toothbrushes, notebooks and pens. Each child went home with his/her own Christmas gifts. We also treated all the ladies working at the Tiyimiseleni Centre to a bucket full of goodies such as sugar, tea and rice and we added a small present to it. Giving couldn’t have been more fun! The Christmas party was an absolute joy for all the children and, although planned relatively early in the year, it was very much appreciated. At the end of the afternoon we saw hundreds of smiling faces going home. Through this newsletter, all the children want to give a big hug to Karen and Doug.

The giving this month also extended to the children graduating from the Ntshuxekani pre-school in Justicia. To celebrate the great work the children have done in school, a lovely dinner with chicken, pap, sheba and lemonade was prepared. As we are very proud of all the 45 children moving up to primary school next year, it was a great pleasure to donate the food and the drinks.

It goes without saying that all the children and the ladies at the Tiyimiseleni Centre wish you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday. Christmas this year gives food for thought, though… unfortunately the Centre will lose its external funding as from May 2014. This is all the more reason for Savanna to see if we can keep this amazing project going. The total running cost for the project is R 500.000 ($50.000) per year. With this money, the 14 ladies can keep giving proper home-based care, all children can get their daily lunch, healthcare and prevention programmes can run and all children can go to school. To get this running cost together, we are looking for sponsors who are willing to commit for a period of 3 years: - Main-sponsor: R 100.000 per year (for 3 years) - Sub-sponsor: R 50.000 per year (for 3 years) Of course, Savanna will be one of the main sponsors and we will continue to provide the project with anything we can: leftover food from our kitchen, electricity, gifts, donations from guests, clothing and so on. In short: if you, your company, business club or family want to become a Main or Sub-sponsor, please do let us know via [email protected] (Rinske Stege). Without our commitment, the hard-working ladies at the Centre will not be able to take proper care of all the needy children in Mabarhule. It would be great if all of us together can help them keep this good and essential work going. For the children at the Tiyimiseleni Centre, the holidays start at the beginning of December. In January, a new school year starts and we can begin using the new building as well. So 2014 promises a fresh and new start!

We wish you all very festive days! Warm wishes from The Savanna family
