Dear Family and Friends of OLSH College Bentleigh, As we begin our Easter break we rejoice with Zoe Quinn (Year 12) who will receive the Premier’s VCE Award for her study score of 50 in VET Community Services. Another excellent achievement from our OLSH girls. During the break and moving into the start of term 2 there will be much activity as the College Musical Hairspray enters into its final rehearsals. We look forward to celebrating the wonderful talent of our OLSH girls and De La Salle boys. Importantly, as a community we were able to enter into the journey of Holy Week with the celebration of our Eucharist on Monday. The Easter story is the reason for the public holidays over this coming weekend. May we be inspired by the faithfulness of Mary, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. It was she who lived each moment of the journey – from suffering and grief to the joy of the Resurrection. Always united in our shared OLSH Spirit.

Faith and Mission

On Friday 11 March, the OLSH Fire Carriers, Mr Santospirito and Ms Callanan, travelled to Avila College to learn about the relationships between countries and Indigenous people have around the world. The day was run just like a sitting of the United Nations, where representatives from countries all around the world negotiated a resolution about the treatment, support and attitude towards their Indigenous peoples. The act contained around 20 clauses. We were to speak on our opinion of the act: which clauses we would accept, the ones we’d reject and the amendments our country would like to make. OLSH was acting as representatives of Indonesia, who has a long and complicated history with their Indigenous people. We found it hard to leave our personal beliefs out of our statements, instead speaking the attitudes of the Indonesian government.

After a couple of unmoderated caucuses we had formed alliances that would support our amendments. At the end of the day the OLSH representatives of Indonesia got their amendment passed! It was such a great day of learning and debating in a formal setting. We heard astounding facts and policies towards Indigenous people, and it was eye-opening to see how some of these may be solved in the future. Georgia Sheppard

Curriculum News

Canvas is an LMS (Learning Management System) which provides teachers and students with safe, secure, reliable access to course materials and attached technologies. An LMS is a way of connecting all the digital tools teachers use in one place. Canvas enables teachers to:      

quickly and easily upload files create a variety of content for their classes, including pages, quizzes & discussions easily embed audio & video and broadcast to students drag & drop in the calendar with students automatically receiving notifications enter, track & provide student feedback quickly and easily extend the use beyond the classroom to rosters for sporting teams & other co-curricular activities

Canvas enables students to:  access all assessment and course materials  view their daily program and all due dates  keep informed via a highly customised notification system  receive timely feedback from their teachers  engage with audio and video interactions with both teachers and other students Canvas enables parents to:    

view marks & feedback, forthcoming assignments and due dates be notified when work has not been submitted punctually view student timetables for each day receive communication from and send messages to individual teachers

All OLSH teaching staff are currently spending significant professional learning time undertaking training in using Canvas. It is intended that Canvas will be trialled with a small number of teachers and their classes mid-way through Term 2, with the whole school moving onto Canvas during Semester two. This is a significant and exciting change for learning and teaching at the College. Not only will it enable more flexibility with teaching and learning, it will ultimately change our method of reporting. It will significantly increase our capacity to provide timely feedback to both parents and students, thereby enabling increased opportunities to improve student achievement. Ms Lynn Egan Assistant Principal Learning and Teaching

Ms Ritu Tangri Whilst working as a CRT I experienced the OLSH culture of heart, revering relationships and constant growth mindset. The staff connects well, and as a teacher, I feel confident to be able to deliver my very best. I was offered an opportunity to join as a full time teacher this year, and I teach Year 7 and 10 Science, Chemistry and Biology Unit 1 and 2; VCAL Numeracy and Numeracy Support. I have taught Science at many high schools in the UK, including Challney High School for Girls, Ickneild High School, Ashcroft High School and Queensbury Academy. School is a big milestone in the journey of students and I hope to make this journey pleasant and memorable and hope to shape the young minds to be lifelong learners. I have an interest in the practice of homeopathy, an alternative stream of medicine, and its positive effects on health. I have published works on alternate health.

Student Wellbeing News On 18 March OLSH supported the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Ably led by the students of Issoudun White the day began with a prayer reflecting on our need as a community to stand together, to reverence relationships and to be more aware of those around us. Students in Issoudun White prepared a montage of photos that were displayed around the school and the girls had an opportunity to sign a mural, declaring that we at OLSH stand together. Thank you to the Year 7 students who prepared orange ribbons for the school to wear.

A reminder to all parents and students that the winter uniform is to be worn in Terms 2 and 3. The school holidays provides an opportunity to check skirt length and to make adjustments. All skirts must be no shorter than just above the knee. The following link may assist with the tie. http://www.ties.com/how-to-tie-a-tie/windsor The winter uniform is to be worn on all days during Terms 2 and 3 unless there is a scheduled PE or Dance class, or unless due to extreme weather official notification is received from the Principal or Assistant Principal.

CABRINI EMERGENCY WORKING WITH OUR SCHOOL We are happy to announce Cabrini Malvern’s Emergency Department is offering pupils from our school a heavily discounted rate of $205 (8 am to 8 pm) and $240 (8 pm to 8 am weekdays and on weekends). We hope this discount of 50% will assist the families in our school community and enable them to receive the best possible treatment for their children. To obtain this discount, your child or carer will simply need to show their current student card or supply school details when attending the Emergency Department. The discount of 50% applies to the attendance fee only and would not include any further out of pocket expenses such as X-rays and blood tests. Cabrini is a private, Catholic, not-for-profit healthcare service that does not rely on funding from government or the Catholic Church. Therefore, they must charge fees for emergency medical care. Unfortunately health insurers do not cover emergency attendances, so they rely on these fees to cover their costs. They understand that their fees of $410 (8 am to 8 pm) and $480 (8 pm to 8 am weekdays and on weekends) to attend their ED can be prohibitive to some families. You may be aware of Cabrini’s extensive services in the emergency and children’s care. They have an emergency department (ED) open 24/7 staffed by senior emergency doctors trained in paediatric medicine. They have a dedicated paediatrics area within the ED and a children’s ward in the unfortunate event that a child needs admission to hospital. A large group of local paediatricians are on-call every day of the year and they have access to a large network of paediatricians for appointments. Cabrini has dedicated, technologically advanced surgical theatres and paediatric surgeons on call should they be required. They pride themselves on their caring and sensitivity to our patients’ needs, and work to make a visit to the ED as stress-free as possible for children and parents.
