Library FYI

NEWS FROM YOUR LIBRARY

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month The library is equal-access, equal opportunity. Plus, what you borrow is your business. We don’t keep records of checkouts. And if you don’t want emails from us, you don’t have to get them (although we recommend it so you can find out about new stuff and get a reminder when items are due or holds are ready).

9

For some folks, having a library card is a given: an essential rite of passage as a youth and vital for educational and recreational resources as an adult. Many library-cardcarriers extol the virtues of the library to their cardless friends/neighbors and convert them into power cardholders. (We’ve seen it happen!) This September, while supplies last, new cardholders will receive an awesome pen/ flashlight when they sign up for a brandspanking-new card. Here are the Top 10 reasons to visit www.aapld.org/your-library-card or stop in and start the process of getting an AAPLD card in your wallet. There’s no catch. We don’t expect anything in return. Nada. We just want you to use our resources. Strike that: we want everyone to use our resources.

You’ll have access to cardholder-only programs, like robotics classes for kids and 3D printing classes for kids and adults. Kind of like a members-only club, but cooler.

8

You can feel safe when your teens are here. We’ve got lots for them to do: volunteer, attend technology/creativity programs, check out YA novels and manga, take practice ACT/SAT exams, and more.

7

You can borrow cool stuff. If books and DVDs aren’t awesome enough for you, you can borrow Wii U controllers, a projector, STEM kits, and more.

6 5 4

You don’t need to buy a $4.65 coffee to use our Wi-Fi.

You can use the library at home in your pajamas. Really. A library card gives you access to movies, e-books, audiobooks, and music available 24/7 from www.aapld.org.

You can come to the library to get stuff done. You can reserve a study room to meet with your lawyer or your tarot card reader. You can have documents notarized. You can print documents when your home printer runs out of ink. It’s genius.

3

You won’t pay overdue fines. Unlike the library of your youth, we don’t charge fines when items are a few days late.

2

If you borrowed only one DVD, one bestseller, and one audiobook a month, your library card would save you more than $645/year over purchasing the items.*

1

If a library card lives in your wallet already, we hope this top ten list reinforces what a great decision you made when you got it. If you don’t have a library card, September is a great month to get yours—for all the reasons above and much more. You’ll get a nifty pen, too. *Based on average price of $19.99 for newly released DVD from Best Buy, average price of $19.99 for hardcover novel on the NYT Best Seller List, and monthly membership of $14.95 at audible. com.

Taking It Outside: AAPLD in the Community Next time you’re out and about in Algonquin or Lake in the Hills, be sure to look for the Library! We’re walking in parades, manning booths at community events, telling stories at the food pantry, and more. Why do we take it outside? Because we love our community! Whether it’s bringing a book discussion group to Clarendale Assisted Living or an afterschool tech club to a local elementary school, we enjoy seeing you outside our walls as much as we love seeing you inside the library. Here are some upcoming events we’ll be attending.

From the Director’s Desk I hope your summer has been an enjoyable time with family and friends. It’s been an amazing summer for the library! Our summer reading program “Reading by Design” winds down on July 31, with a record number of readers. Our Adult Services department had a goal of 1000 books read by our adult participants—and they achieved it! We’ll be celebrating everyone’s accomplishments with our End-of-Summer-Reading Party and Fox Tales Storytelling Festival. Hope you all had fun!

ADMINISTRATION STAFF AREA

It’s our goal to keep the Harnish Main Library open as much as possible during construction. Eastgate Branch will be closed for renovations for about a week (dates to be announced later.) Can’t find something? Please ask us! And don’t forget, inter-library loans will always be available.

It’s been a wonderful summer for our Board and staff as well. In addition to participating in parades and community events, we look forward to our expansion/renovation project beginning on August 2. By fall 2018, you will have improved library buildings, with more room for creating, learning, and engaging with others in the community. And it all comes at no additional cost to taxpayers. In fact, you’ll be receiving a tax break along with your improved facilities and resources. Let me explain. The 2017 calendar year is the last year residents will be taxed for the cost of construction bonds used to build the Main Library on Harnish Drive, as these bonds will be paid off during the 2018-2019 fiscal year. Thus, there will be no levy for the bonds in calendar year 2018. For example, a resident paying $300 to the library district on the 2017 tax bill (payable in 2018), will pay up to 14% less for library taxes on their 2018 tax bill (payable in 2019). How is this possible? For the most part, this construction project is funded from capital reserves that the library district has built up over the last 12 years. The remainder of the funding for the construction will come from borrowed funds that the district will pay back out of normal operational revenue over the next 10 years—all without negatively impacting normal library operations. At the end of the day, we’ll have more room and more resources for the community. We anticipate a little dust and noise along the way, but it will be worth it.

AAPLD Thrives with Help from the Friends On Tuesday mornings, the Eastgate Branch’s lower level hosts meetings of the Friends of the Library. Members shelve, organize, and decorate their “store” in anticipation of their book sales three times a year. Conversations and laughter fill the room of volunteers, many of whom have been Friends for 15+ years. “I enjoy the challenge of working with my colleagues to put on a great sale,” says Kent Sprague, himself a Friend since the mid 90’s. “It keeps me involved in something that is important to me: our library.” “We enjoy the wonderful camaraderie and friendships we’ve made,” says Doris Benes, who joined the Friends with her husband

Ralph in 2010. “We wanted to give back to the community—it’s a labor of love.”

aquarium, and summer reading program prizes, among other items.

Through their book sales, the Friends have funded a variety of purchases and programs not covered under AAPLD’s annual budget, such as the softcover children’s books that are handed out at local parades. The Friends also provided the funds for AAPLD to purchase one of the area’s first library 3D printers, the very popular Youth Services salt water

Executive Director Stephen Bero notes the Friends’ support extends beyond their financial contributions. “It means a lot to me and the rest of the staff that such a hardworking, loyal group of residents supports the library and everything we do here,” he says. “We wouldn’t be who we are without our Friends.”

Jenni Storm, Early Literacy Educator What do children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write? What’s the best book to read in story time? How does singing help with reading? Ask Jenni! Jenni Storm, Early Literacy Educator, has been with AAPLD since summer 2016. When not running a program or providing service at the Youth Services Department desk, Jenni visits local preschools, where she shares her favorite songs and stories with students. In addition to her outreach activities, Jenni plans and runs programs and activities that develop early literacy skills, such as Outdoor Literacy/Numeracy activities, Countdown to Kindergarten, and preschool story times. You will often see her cruising around the library with a

bag full of books, puppets, and silly story time props. “I love our youngest patrons!” Jenni says. “It is such a pleasure to work where I can catch up with familiar faces, meet new families, and see preschool students from my outreach visits.” Before coming to AAPLD, Jenni worked as an elementary school reading teacher and 5th grade classroom teacher and spent a few years as a full-time mom. As a youngster, Jenni even had 10 minutes of fame. “I was a contestant on The Bozo Show and won!” she says. Outside of work, Jenni loves spending time with her husband and three children. “You’ll find us playing sports together, checking out parks and exploring new places whenever we can find the time,” she says. Be sure to say hi to Jenni next time you stop by the Youth Services Department!
