Jack Hansen is the current Parli Debate coach at Whitman University. He and the team have had decent success in the NPDA Nationals, making it as far as the Semi Finals in 2012, before being defeated by University of Oregon. In hopes of leading his team further in 2013, Jack has been actively looking for ways to help the WU debate squad to improve. Jack wants to sign up his team for as many tournaments as possible in order to get the team more experience. Because Jack is busy most of the

Javier Morales Midfielder

2010 Perhaps no player in Major League Soccer was poised to have a better 2011 than Javier Morales. From the get-go, the Argentine midfield maestro was pulling the strings for a Real Salt Lake side on the cusp of international glory, his infectious attitude, quiet leadership and abundant skill helping a pioneering club earn plaudits from every corner of America’s soccer landscape. So while RSL’s disappointment at the end of its CONCACAF Champions League run in late April was a tough blow for the squad, it’s quite telling that the result’s effect on the team’s season paled in comparison to the loss of Morales to an ankle injury just 10 days after the stinging defeat.

Consistent return to top form in 2010 earned the Argentine playmaker his first MLS “Best XI” honor at season’s end, his second RSL Most Valuable Player award, and his second consecutive MLS All-Star nomination – this time voted as a “First XI” choice by fans, players, coaches, GM’s and his playing peers … Combined to play 2,511 minutes across 32 matches (28 starts) in League and Cup competition ... Led squad with nine assists in MLS play while also ranking in top 5 with an MLS-careerhigh seven goals (2nd), 25 starts (4th), and 2,163 minutes played (5th) … The nine helpers placed T-9th across MLS alongside fellow Argentine Guillermo Barros Schelotto, while 76 fouls suffered were 2nd most, behind only League MVP david Ferreira … Finished season in top five on RSL’s career charts in numerous categories, his all-time numbers including 31 assists (1st), 15 goals (T-5th w/ Movsisyan), 6 game-winning assists (1st), 7 game-winning goals (2nd), 199 fouls suffered (2nd behind A. Williams), 64 shots on goal (4th), and 132 shots (T-5th w/ Kreis) … 2G/1A effort in a thorough 3-0 win on 3/27 @ SJ led to Morales being voted the first MLS Player of the Week of 2010 … Started scoring with a stunning 30-yard volley into the upper right 90 (14’) before finishing the night’s scoring with another upper-corner beauty on a free kick from the edge of the area (54’), and notched an assist on an espindola (27’) goal in between … The brace marked his first multi-goal effort in what was his 63rd regular-season match in an RSL uniform … His tally on 4/01 @ HOu (17’) pushed RSL out to a lead in the eventual 1-2 defeat, and was retroactively voted the MLS Goal of the Week for Week 2 to start the season on 6/09 v. LA, his 80’ goal off a Galaxy miscue counting as the lone goal in a 1-0 win that preceded the World Cup break …

A Torrey Story PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEX ADAMS A trip to Torrey could be described as one aesthetic pleasure after another. To capture the heart of Torrey, one must experience Torrey and on this trip, we did just that. We enjoyed a horseback ride with Backcountry Outfitters through the red cliffs. We nestled on a cozy couch for a quiet read the Robber’s Roost, which serves the community as a bookstore, coffee shop and home to the Entrada Institute’s Women’s Redrock Music Festival. We snacked on spicy, freshly picked arugula offered to us by Farmer Jack of the Torrey Greenhouse, and experienced the satisfying crunch of Red Desert Candy Company’s Pepita & Sunflower Brittle. We could write a novel about all of the food and fun we had at Chef Gary’s Café Diablo. Together the locally owned restaurants and businesses of Wayne County which is home not only to Torrey, but to the small towns of Loa, Lyman, Bicknell, Caineville, Teasdale, and Hanksville offer a unique and unforgettable experience. Independent businesses create better places, and from our experience there are few places where locally owned businesses have made a better mark than Wayne County, Utah.

Deep down I always knew I wanted to be a photographer. I am fascinated by beauty. Beautiful light, beautiful people, beautiful food, beautiful stories, beautiful moments, anything; I am drawn to it like a magnet. And for me, capturing the essence of these things with my camera is my way of contributing something meaningful to anyone who may see it and appreciate it. I photographed the stories of local business owners in the hope that their images would inspire us to be more connected with each other. To ask questions about where we shop and what we value, and to really think about how we can make the most positive footprint in our own communities, instead of how we can save the most money or time. After months of shooting and listening to their stories I can assure you, local is beautiful.
