Nietzsche, Christ, and Siddhartha: Finding “IT” in Jack Kerouac’s On the Road MATTHEW P. AWALT Jack Kerouac chose a nomadic life of poverty, abandoned fruitful relationships, and embraced criminals and outcasts as friends and lovers in his subconscious quest to find “IT” and to connect all life at once. This destination of perpetual movement was inspired by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s doctrine of das ewige Wiederkehr, Siddhartha’s cyclical Buddhism, and the sufferings of Jesus Christ.
