Library Celebrates “A Groovy Christmas”

D

ressed in different decades, primed in different hair dos, and accessorized with beads, shells and ribbons, the library staff of the De La Salle University celebrated their probably last Christmas party in the present building in the afternoon of December 19, 2011. Barely a week of preparation for the Library General Assembly cum Christmas party themed A Groovy Christmas, all units in the library gamely presented their epic dance moves of the past decades, to the delight of each and every personnel. First to present their dancing prowess were the people from the Archives. They provocatively danced via one of Madonna’s 80’s hit Like a Virgin. Next to present were the staff from the Satellite Libraries. They narrated the historical events of the 80’s, matching them with the different dance craze from dirty dancing to the famous Bagets relaxing moves. The Readers’ Services would not let the afternoon pass without showing their talents as the men from the different sections of the said unit

demonstrated their masculinity to the tune of Hagibis’ Katawan, while their women gracefully turned, hopped and skipped through the music Mama Mia. The 80’s decade seemed to be the Library’s favorite since the combined group of the Director’s Office, Systems Services and American Studies Resource Center presented another 80’s number, this time, popularized by local artista like Maricel Soriano and the Bagets. In full force, all staff from the different offices shaked, twisted, bended and swayed through Rico Mambo, Shake Body Dancer and Just Got Lucky. The Technical Services was the only group to present another decade, which is the 60’s. All members of the group gamely rocked, bended and twisted their bodies and feet to the tune of The Archie’s Sugar, Sugar, Roy Orbison’s Oh, Pretty Woman and Chubby Checker’s Let’s Twist Again. This group was the jolliest among the five groups, complete with smoke effect, which went a little overboard, resulting to zero visibility and temporary halting of their performance. In the end, the group was able to present their dance number sans the smoke. The groups’ efforts were rewarded with prizes. Third prize went to the Archives, 2nd prize winner were the Technical Services, and the grand prize went to the combined offices of the Director’s Office, Systems Services and the American Studies Resource Center. The male best in costume was awarded to 60’s representative Jorge Erwin Rada, who wore a yellow large-collared printed polo, paired with yellow bell-bottoms. Female best in costume, on the other hand, was awarded to purple haired Purisima Fernando a contemporary of Cyndi Lauper. A Groovy Christmas was carefully planned by the men and women of the Technical Services, headed by its coordinator, Ms. Jojie Gonda.

User Vocabulary And Library Of Congress Subject Headings : A Study In Academic Online Catalog By Jojie Gonda The introduction to online cataloging in libraries opens up an impressive ease of use and new possibilities for powerful information retrieval for library users. The online searching service extends the resources of the library beyond its usual walls. When a card catalog is put online, it is normal for frequent library users to think that it is the same catalog that we once had before. For the searcher, the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) is a kind of “black box”. One cannot see what is inside, in the same way that one skims through a card catalog drawer. An OPAC is a library catalog accessed via computer terminal for the benefit of library users. Over the past decade, a basic question remains : how effective are they in the hands of library user? (Hong, Xu, 1996). The librarian’s task now is to design the content and arrangement of catalogs so as to maximize the advantages of its new technical and technological capabilities. “With the advent of Internet, the behavior of academic library users has drastically changed in recent years. Web search engines have become the preferred tool over the library public access catalog for finding information (Jui, M. & Weng C., 2008).” According to Mallari, et al. (2010), continuous improvement of services and patron satisfaction are among the main goals of most libraries. OPAC terminals began to replace card catalogs in the De La Salle University Library in the late 1990s. In the year 2000, the Millennium integrated library system was introduced to the library. It provides the users’ online access to the library’s catalog, allowing them to search and retrieve records through the WebOPAC. This catalog can be searched from any part of the world, as it is online. It has changed the traditional concept of access in a significant way. It allows multidimensional searches providing as many access points of bibliographic elements such as keyword, title, author, subject, call number, ISBN etc. The current library

holdings at the time of this study, contains approximately 354,513 print books, 264 e-books, 4,031 print foreign and local journals, 20,134 thesis and dissertations, 10,928 CD-ROM volumes, 1,023 maps and other collections in a variety of formats. The mentioned collections are the size of bibliographic records stored in the DLSU Library’s WebOPAC database. Each bibliographic record has a unique subject heading. This study will examine retrieval performance of the user vocabulary used by the searchers as against the LC subject headings. The purpose of this study is to determine the different combinations of search features and strategies used by the searchers in using online catalog. Since the main focus of this study relates to subject access points provided by the WebOPAC, the following objectives were: 1. To identify the problems of subject searching in WebOPAC mainly the difficulties in matching a user term to the terminology of the system; 2. To provide possible solutions to subject searching problems; 3. To create a guidelist of subject headings that could be programmed into online system that will make searching easier, especially for new OPAC users. Descriptive analysis was the method used in this study. To determine the retrieval process of subject entry terms, the researcher collected the transaction logs during the First Term (June-September) of Academic Year 2011-2012. The user terms or natural language used or typed by the searcher in subject bibliographic data were described, then compared against the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) list, to determine the degree of match success. The LCSH list is a controlled vocabulary list which is essential in analyzing a document and selecting the most suitable descriptors in assigning a subject. It is simply designed

to ensure that the subject matter of the documents is consistently described. This study was intended to identify the problems and deficiencies of searches using the subject bibliographic data. The title, author, ISBN and call number were not included because of their specificity of terms. The data collected from transaction logs kept by the system’s software, were recorded and analyzed statistically by using descriptive analysis. Due to the limitation of the Millennium to record transaction logs for more than one month, the data collected were from June to September for the First Term Academic Year 2011-2012. The total number of library users covered by the studies were broken down as follows: Administrative-48 ; Faculty-1,167; Graduate-665; Undergraduate-13,580; and Staff-361. The total number of library users covered by the studies were broken down as follows: Administrative-48 ; Faculty-1,167; Graduate-665; Undergraduate-13,580; and Staff-361. Shown in Figure I is the screen shot of the Millennium WebOPAC used by the De La Salle University Library. The different type of searches are Keyword, Title, Author, Subject, etc. At the right side of the panel, each collection is narrowed down by format or specific type of material for easier searching. The system can also be searched by course name/number and instructors’ name. For more than three months, which is equivalent to 100 days, the total number of samples of transactions collected was 339,539. Of these 32,777 were subject search transactions and 199,902 for keyword transactions. Table I displays the distribution of search results for each month (see Table 1, 2 and 3) where N= Total number of type search.

This result goes to show that

Keyword searching was the most frequently used category. The searching behavior of users may be greatly influenced by using the Web search engines. This is not surprising because a user who does not opt for a search category will automatically search by keyword.

To identify the correct subject terms, the author collected the top ten user vocabulary out of the 30 most frequently used term. With their corresponding number of use, they were compared with the LC subject headings list (see Table 4).

Table 3. Search results from August to September Looking at Table 4, it appears that the level of subject search use is indeed problematic, as attested by the numerous studies mentioned here. But subject searching is a powerful search strategy that would enable users to extract relevant information from the

WebOPAC. Matching the user vocabulary as against the controlled vocabulary reveals that: 1) WebOPAC users in this study were not properly guided in putting search strings; 2) Users have little or no knowledge of using the system’s vocabulary. Although

User vocabulary Math Manufacturing Feasibility research method Management control system Music education Child development learning Learning math Academic performance Euthanasia Gender appreciation of music

there is a high number of search used, the system has no capability to identify if the search is successful or unsuccessful, it cannot also answers user’s satisfaction with the result.

Table 4. Comparison between user vocabulary and Library of Congress subject heading The result of the transaction log analysis attest the findings of previous studies gathered for this research. A variety of studies show that subject searching is

problematic for patrons because they are not familiar with the LCSH and the system does not guide them in finding the appropriate LC terms. This reveals that

WebOPAC users are still at a loss when it comes to using the subject search tool. The librarian’s key role, therefore, is to be the middleman between the user and the

Since academic libraries aim to provide more dynamic and versatile services, enhancing library’s OPAC should be considered one of its top priorities. Based on the results of the study, the following are recommended: 1. Adding “See” and “See also “ features of the Millennium, as the Millennium can be enabled with such features. This flexibility will allow users to enter their chosen topic using the natural language in the search box, and which the system will map the query to the structure and content of the database. 2. Design or create a tutorial on how to use the controlled vocabulary to locate the subject terms correctly. 3. Create an online thesaurus or subject authority control tools that could be integrated to the system. 4. Increase subject content of the catalog database. 5. Formulate a better library instruction programs in order to conduct online searches. 6. Employ a new enhanced catalog with social networking features as it will allow the user to interact, participate, give suggestions in library’s discussion.

DLSU Library Reaches Out To Public School Librarians By Karen Cecille Victoria Aside from the usual book donation and serving as resource speakers in national seminars and fora of faculty librarians, this year, as part of its outreach program, the De La Salle University Library in partnership with American Corner Manila and Philippine Normal University Library and Information Science Alumni Association (PNULISAA), conducted a two-day seminar-workshop for public school librarians on October 27-28, 2011. The activity aimed to orient the participants with the different agencies and organizations providing free materials; equip them with the knowledge and skills needed in locating and evaluating free online resources; introduce cost-effective ways of promoting library resources and

services; introduce e-Reference services; and provide training on the use of open source library software to aid them in eventually automating basic library functions. Seasoned faculty librarians and staff of DLSU and the Counselor of Public Affairs of the US Embassy Manila served as the resource speakers of the event. The first day was kicked off by Mr. Joseph Yap (MEC Library). He briefed the participants on the acquisition guidelines, policies and tools and shared tips and tricks on acquiring quality yet free materials from different agencies and organizations. The DLSU Library Director, Ms. Ana Maria B. Fresnido, conducted the second session. She gave an overview of DLSU library’s outreach program and emphasized on the

American Corner of DLSU. After building the physical collection, the participants learned about building their electronic collection through Ms. Marita G. Valerio (Cataloging) on the third session. She discussed criteria on selecting websites from where different library materials can be found. Ms. Christine Abrigo (Director’s Office) then lectured on “Reinventing reference service: emerging technologies and information service.” The first day was wrapped up by Ms. Janice D.C. Peñaflor (Collection Development and ASRC) wherein she presented the different ways of promoting and marketing the library which includes the traditional approach with some twists as well as the electronic ways.
