We :2\.re DedicatecfT'o T'lie Clii(cfren The Fashion Show is around the comer on Oct. 20-our biggest fund raiser. It takes hours of work by many members to present this event. It' s a mission of love for the children and the results wi ll be ''Sweet". We all have reasons for being members of La Providencja Guild of Children' s Hospital Los Angeles and donating our time and effo1is. Some have had children or fi·iends treated at the Hospital; some are inspired by the research; others want to make a positive impact for the children..

Here are a few more reasons we are dedicated to Children' s Hospital Los Angeles: Reef Carneson age 5: At jive months he was diagnosed with high risk infant ALL (acu te lymphoblastic leukemia). Aggressive chemotherapy during his .first year did not result in remission being obtained and at 11 months h e received a bone marrow transplan.t. After moving to the U.S. from South Africa for help, the family found Children's Hospital Los Angeles w as the only Hospital in the United States that would evalutate and treat him .. Reef has come a very long way and Children's Hospital has been instrumental in this progress, according to his

Mother Lydia. Six months after the bone man·ow transplant he developed Grall vs Host Disease, now the biggest issue. The complications include contractures, malnutrition, blindness, deafness, complete loss of mobility and could result in death .. This diagnosis was not made unti l the family came to the U.S. and when arriving here he was a very sick little boy.

However, within six weeks, Children's Hospital Los Angeles turned his l(fe around by putting him on the correct m edications and giving him inpatient rehab. He cun·ently receives out patient occupational therapy and physical therapy and it has helped him to jimction as a "normal" boy. He needs leg braces because ofakle andfoot problems. The braces will help him to walk correctly and hopefully stop the deterioration ofhis ankle mobility.

Lydia says he has many more obstacles to overcome, but she truly believes that with the continued care at Children's he wi ll be able to flourish .. Follow Reefs progress at savebabyreef.com.

Audrey Grace Silah, age 6: At three ""'eeks ofage, Audrey developed a cold which turned into a painful ear injection. She was diagnosed with the respiratory virus RSV and rushed by ambulance to Children's Hospital. J.'or.five days she was given intensive care, with doctors and nurses attending her every two hours to suct;onjluid.fi·om her nostrils. Jacob Mullenbruck, 14: When 8 years old Jacob developed a lump on his neck. He went to many doctors, but none could figure out the problem. He finally was seen at Children' s Hospital , where he was diagnosed w ithin five minutes. He had an extremely rare bitih defect, a fourth brachial cleft sinus. Dr. D e nnis Maceri and Dr. Kenneth Geller performed two surgeries, saving his life. These are just a few of the miracles that Children ' s Hospital accomplishes on a dai ly basis. Miracle children, miracle research. T hat's why we have a Fashion Show, work in the Thrift Shop and continue with all our endeavors with a positive and ded icated atti tude. This is what counts in life-strivi ng to help others and especially children in the best way we know. L orelei Kelley , Newsletter Editor

I am in awe of the great things we accomplish. Our teamwork, bar none, is phenomenal. We always seem to be able to top ourselves and raise the bar for the next group effort. Now we are down to counting days as they dwindle away to Oct. 20 and our "Sweet Charity" extravaganza. Once again, I know we will all do our best to make this the "one to remember". So get out the word to friends and neighbors and show everyone how we throw a party . The Guild and the children are counting on you.

While Thrift Shop Chairman Deb Spang is busy creating beautiful and "yummy" centerpieces for the Fashion Show, let' s take a moment to reflect on what

projects she has brewing. Presently Deb is working on rearranging the display areas for ease of shopping. New racks are being purchased and fixtures "moved around". She also is planning to rearrange the back room. Ever thinking about how to streamline our procedures, D eb has designed a new "sold" ticket, and has new memo boards for members & customer needs. Does she sleep? I don 't think so. She is constantly thinking and keeping us all busy and organized.
