Introduction: The vast Hudson Bay Lowland (HBL) of northern Ontario is undoubtedly the most poorly surveyed area in the province for Odonata. This is primarily due to the lack of road access to almost all of the HBL. The Hudson Bay Lowland occupies about 3.5% of the surface area of Canada and its 325,000 knr' is about a quarter of Ontario's area (Riley 2003). According to Riley (1982, 1989, 1993) the total wetland area of the Ontario HBL is 221,000 krrr', made up of the following wetland types: bog (36(%), fen (240/0), swamp (130/0), and marsh (50/0). Since much of the HBL is wetland, it provides extensive habitat for a variety of northern Odonata species.

More recently, since 1990 the authors have made a number of trips to the northern HBL in Ontario and have recorded observations and made collections of Odonata specimens at a number of locations in conjunction with other fieldwork. In 1990 (20 June1 July) and 1991 (4-22 July) Paul D. Pratt (PDP) and others made collections of 18 species at Moosonee and Moose Factory (Cochrane Dist.) and in the

vicinity of the Brant River, 10km south of Hudson Bay within Polar Bear Provincial Park (Kenora Dist.) in conjunction with the "Habitat Based Wildlife Assessment of Ontario's SubArctic Coast Project' (Wilson 1990). In 2000 (27 Aug.-2 Sep.), 2001 (19-20 June; 3-14 July), 2002 (5-11 July), and 2003 (21 June; 7-13 July), Donald A. Sutherland (DAS), Michael J. Oldham (MJO), and Colin D. Jones (CDJ) made opportunistic observations and collections of Odonata at a number of locations in the HBL largely in conjunction with surveys for Polar Bear, Woodland Caribou and Golden Eagle. This article summarizes our observations (n = 351) and those of earlier workers (n = 251). The collections of PDP are in his personal collection, and those of MJO, DAS, and CDJ are primarily in the collection of the Natural Heritage Information Centre (NHIC), with some

History: The study of the Odonata of the HBL of Ontario spans more than a century. Apparently the first Odonata collections from the Ontario portion of the HBL were made by W.J. Wilson in August, 1904along the Kenogami River, Cochrane District. Subsequent collections have been made in 1931 August, W.J.K. Harkness, Mattagami River and lower Moose River, Cochrane District; 1934 - 4-22 July, G.S. Walley and E.S. Pentland, Moosonee and vicinity, including Shipsands Island and Netitichi Point, Cochrane Dist.rict; 1939 - 18 July-I 2 August, H. Clawson, S.C. Downing, C.E. Hope, M.D. Kirk,
